Best of the Gotthard Railway

While the Gotthard Railway is still in use it has seen a significant decline in use since the opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel in December 2016, which replaced the long and windy climb to the old Gotthard tunnel with a more direct route in the form of a tunnel at the level of the valley floor. The original tunnel which first opened in 1882, much like the recently opened base tunnel was a truly astounding feat of engineering at the time. While it has its obvious downsides in terms of a longer journey time and increased energy costs to haul passengers and cargo up a narrow valley to where the old tunnel is located the railway has a unique beauty all of its own. Whether in winter when snow blankets its higher elevations or in summer when cows graze the lush grass that flanks the railway it was certainly an experience that any passenger could appreciate. I hope you enjoy this video, my attempt at a tribute to this treasure that all rail fans can admire.
