  • Francis "Gary" Powers enters the cockpit of his U-2 spy plane for an overflight deep into the Soviet Union. He's going to take photographs of the secretive Soviet ICBM development programme. It is believed that the Soviet arsenal does not contain a surface to air missile that can reach the 70,000ft cruising altitude of his aircraft...

    I just discovered this channel a few days ago, and I'm In awe lol. I would love to see a time-lapse on the Battle off Samar in 1944. Its a very historically significant battle in that it was the first time the Japanese utilized kamikaze tactics with success in WWII. And moreover, the heroic actions of the officers on the US side are still talked about to this day.

    • @extrahistory8956
      @extrahistory8956 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly for as famous as that battle is, I'm dumbfounded that there is almost no actual mention or focus on the landings that proceeded it, nor much about the land battles that took place across the Philippines. There were like 3 Japanese armies there, and over 400,000 Japanese troops died there.

    He hit on this very shortly, but the "self destruct" system mentioned would not have destroyed the whole plane as many would assume (even Eisenhower assumed this). It was rather a very small charge (only a couple pounds) only meant to destroy the camera. Another fun act, the U-2 that Power's was shot down in was actually a frankinstined U-2 that had already been in one serious accident before. I challenge Operations Room channel to look into the stories of the other 6 U-2s that were shot down. Many people know of the Power's shootdown, but have never heard of the other 6 U-2s that were shot down between 1960 and 1978.

    This leads me to believe that Power's U2 did not have any type of missile launch warning system and also that Powers did not see the launch visually?

    You would think the self destruct would automatically trigger at the same time as the ejection seat. I mean thats how I would engineer it.

    According to Sergey Krushchev's book, the battery fired only one rather than three missiles successfully, with the other two failing to launch. It was not expected to be effective, which I presume is why other batteries kept engaging and eventually hitting the friendly MiG. There was also an interception by an unarmed Sukhoi (that happened to be in transit from the factory to its westerly unit at the time) with orders to ram the plane before any of the SAMs were fired, but the pilot missed his one "chance" and did not have enough fuel for further passes.

    As far as I know, the story was a bit more complicated than hitting with the third missile. There were all kinds of adventures with their fighters, etc.

    The other version of this says Article 360 flamed out and dropped to around 30,000 feet where the V-75 (SA-2) disabled it. To me, this is plausible for two reasons: (a), this airplane was a lemon and never should have been used on the longest, most perilous mission of the Overflight program. Powers himself in his autobiography said it had an intermittent fuel tank problem and the autopilot had begun to malfunction, a critical event for a mission as lengthy and dangerous as this one. (b), Powers had been having trouble with his wife since before they were married. He had difficulty sleeping during the three days in which they were trying to launch the mission from Peshawar. If he dozed off or his mind wandered for only a moment, disaster was certainly possible, especially with aircraft reliability, Power’s decision to continue without the autopilot and the human factor in play. And there is another intriguing possibility expounded (and, to the best of my research, suspiciously never repeated) by U-2 historian Chris Pocock in “U-2 Spyplane”: Powers, on a fishing trip and after a few beers with his buddy Sammy Snider, admitted that Article 360’s J-75 engine had indeed stopped running before the SA-2 missiles arrived. Sixty years later, the CIA’s greatest spy controversy lives on. Powers’ son insists his father’s version (the same as dramatized here) is the true one. He claims in his book “Spy Pilot” that he found documentation proving that the U-2 was at 70,500 feet when the mission ended. I continue to believe the U-2 Incident is similar to a line from Oliver Stone’s “JFK”: a mystery in a riddle wrapped around an enigma.

    It's hard to imagine a world were a country would almost go to nuclear war just because someone was taking pictures of it. In a day and age where you can see pictures of your house from space for free, I guess I just don't have that idea of privacy. Not that I'd do anything worth seeing from space at my house, just one of those things that's changed so much.

      Ofcoz..Just violated the sovereign country airspace, pretend to be a weather research plane which you were clearly not, play foolish games with the superpower and your "imagination" won't be quick enough to see the oncoming (Russian) Sam's..peace to yah all! Conclusion: fly over your own country, respect others just as you would want your country to be respected. Oh..and do not lie about weather "research"..
