    Termites make a rich protein and Vit.B12 snack for our chickens. Our chickens love termites. We can harvest termites in an earthen pot filled with cowdung and dry organic matter, pot is kept with open mouth facing towards the ground. After 2-3 days the pot gets filled with termites. When the chickens see us overturning the pot the will come running for the termites.

      Mulching trees with wood chips, broken twigs etc. is a diversion technique that I have adopted in my garden. Termites are really helpful for farmers, they eat the dead wood and in turn enrich the soil. They also eat dead barks on live tree too. I have visualized, termites eating dead barks of neem tree itself. (Neem leaves, oil, bark etc. Widely used as anti-pest, anti-fungal agent by farmers) .Earthworms generally till the soil, 6 to 7 feet only, whereas termites can reach up below 100 ft. They increase porosity and help air to reach the root and promote tree growth. Besides termites acts as feed for birds. They are helpful in sustaining the ecosystem.

    • @crypton_8l87
      @crypton_8l87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      termites need soil connectivity.
      if you live in a high rise or centre of a city, they're not an issue. They're extremely beneficial in arid zones as they keep the leaf litter and forests from getting bone dry in summer.
      Termites are literally the only way to stop forest fires from spreading. One single early shower and termites with cover the entire forest floor with mud - and safely return biomass and nutrients back to the soil with their work.
      Termites do NOT harm living trees.
      In India as most of our homes are concrete these days they cannot survive.
      They could only be dangerous in old homes in rural areas which used to have timber framework for roofs.

      @@farmaanandaa Thank you 😊 we have recently got a land and there is a lot of termite activity. I was wondering if the wood chips will get eaten up by the termite and then we lose the mulch cover. But then realised any bit of straw, wood found on the ground is attacked by termites. Though they help break down organic matter. Can they affect the roots? Thanks

    • @farmaanandaa
      @farmaanandaa  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Termite eat dead organic matter and build soil. The way to protect your trees from termite is to give them enough food to eat on the soil floor. So mulch heavily. Keep them fed and happy. Also as the soil builds and big insects come in, they will keep the termite population in check.
