How can something I’ve never heard sound so familiar and remind me of something I’ve never experienced?
Brad McCallion you said exactly how I feel omg
*recognition
I truly believe in it
because it is evocative (and probably is built on familiar traditions)
That's poetry doing it's magic
Because feelings bro.
No one:
Hozier: *being inhumanely perfect pitched live*
Desmonda Cathabel the most pefect here
His transitions are soooooo good & clean I can't
if no one is saying nothing than isnt everyone saying something
how very inhumane lol
...despite being visibly exhausted
I've listened to this song so much that it is now part of my DNA.
same
I wake up with it in my head!
Same.
SAME AHAH
Me too.
The Irishness of this song is rejuvenating i swear
Indeed
The whole bird and thorn thing reminds me of Oscar Wilde. Very Irish indeed.
Yep!
Romi C I looked up what a shrike is. Holy shit those birds are hardcore lol
I need you to know that every time this song plays now I start laughing over this comment I read months ago 😂
Hozier's new album is criminally underrated!
dude relax its only been a few days.
It's been only like a week lol give it time
It reached #1 on Billboard 200 list in only 10 days. Thank you, Americans.
Is it?
@@myriamdimaio1499 No it's not, he's being insanely dramatic.
I love how he lets his accent shine through in this song
He's wicklow and I'm dublin and accent means everything because it is who you are. Thank goodness I'm so lucky that I'm here seeing Bill Nye comment and being able to reply! We are zeros and wans!
WE ARE ZEROS AND WANS! (subject to correction) X
His vocal frequency traveled at an interesting velocity as well, science rules
*Shoine
i love that he made a romantic song about little birds that impale their prey on thrones/barbs. serious heart-eyes.
Irish, alright.
Beauty isn't always kind. Love isn't always pretty.
We need heart ears!
@Michael King What do you mean by that?
Not to be dramatic but I would die for this man
that is so dramatic though xd

I can't imagine what pain and love this man has experienced in his life to be able to write and sing like that. Truly, Hozier is a treasure for our generation.
It's called being Irish
@@carmiemc3736 it’s true, we just be like that
I am an old woman, a child of the 1960s-70s, in the musical era of Van Morrison and Cat Stevens and Led Zeppelin and The Beatles. Yes, we had amazing music but as I say to nostalgic musical snobs, there really are great artists now. Hozier is one of the best.
You are not old!
@@glendakurkimaki5834 I have great appreciation for people like you who are still able to see the good in the new and unfamiliar. thank you x
I'm not far behind you...I am Irish and follow a lot of the Irish music scene as its absolutely brilliant (in my humble opinion)....
This is refreshing. Thank you
Dermot Kennedy is an amazing artist too
Hozier's music makes me feel like i am in love. It doesn't matter whether i actually am or not, it is about the feeling (which is undescribable) somewhere deep down, it gently fills holes in chest, soothes wounded heart.
Absolutely beautiful perfomance! Thank you!
oh my god, well said
I feel like that too, more so with his movement, would that I and alone songs along with this shrike one. very wholesome lyrics and singing and the composition.
He is such a gifted well rounded artist; hauntingly beautiful in every facet. He has a deep well of emotion and love. His talents truly shine in his abilities transfer it to us through music, in such a bold, honest way.
Yes. This exactly. It's my church. Unconditional love
I feel exactly the same way, but I couldn't put it into words. Thank you for expressing it 🖤🖤
One of my favorites from the album and everytime I hear it it's like I'm listening to a memory and I'm brought back to the first time I've loved, fuck it up Andrew.
It really does sound like the the physical manifestation of memory through sound.
Because it is
Andrew is not a name us peasants can call him!
Mels Mew this man is not of this earth.... but in a very good way
Or alternatively he is the purest form of this earth
I feel like a Florence Welch/Hozier collab would be exquisite.
Chloe Newnham that would be so amazing that i don’t think the earth could handle its beauty and we’d all spontaneously combust
Sara M Magical whimsical beings ✨
Where should I start with her??
great call with this pairing...both voices incredible
Red Sharpie the best place to start with Florence Welch is ‘dog days are over’
I felt this on all planes of existences.
Amen.
Most underrated Hozier song by far
I met Hozier in person after one of his shows and I love his simplicity, just like this video here, you don’t see him bragging and showing the most expensive brands or jewelry, he only needs his talent to show who’s the best
Well put. 🙂
Yea, he is soo humble and kind
Ironically his lyrics are anything but simple. They are so layered and beautiful and the symbolism is incredible. I can imagine how humble he is by what you've said... Jealous you got the chance!
how does it feel like having lived my dream?
He doesn't need to show anything but his work, this is so true
he's like a singing angel who lives in a tree
Same!
We don't call him Forest Daddy for nothing, love.
A bird? A shrike! Our angel of small death.
PERFECT description! it's like, if you toss him up an apple he'll play you a song.
He is also the tree.
When my daughter passed away, I had no one to tell the truth about the depth of the suffering of loosing her has been for me. This song gives some words to the loss of Jamie in my heart. To this day I have not been able to speak Openly, honestly, what losing her has felt like to me. With "family" judging her struggles throughout her life, and making her passing all about themselves, Of course, they needed to do it so they would feel better about their lives. It gave them reason to make them feel better about themseves, to move on without conscience or guilt. After all, they could so easily convince her. Use her for their own pleasure or gain. Nothing I said put an end to it all. I wish I had shouted. But all that is gone with her now. I continue to speak, but still no one hears it. No one will ever understand how deeply she tusted them and because of it, how deeply she lost.
This song some how puts words to the pain that I know. And I think Jamie would be grateful to know that I hear her voice in your song.
Sorry for your loss
I was born in America but for these five minutes and eight seconds, I'm a proud Irishwoman scaling a grassy hilltop overlooking a lush valley where my sheep are grazing as the fog dissipates in the morning sun.
That is strangely accurate to my view out the window most mornings, good job 😂😂
hush
@@dylancurtin6609 what a life you have! beautiful!
@@sirjsph26 wouldn't give it up ever
This is the most accurate description of the feeling I get when I listen to this song. And I am far from an Irishwoman!
Such a beautiful and well written song, Love how Hoziers voice is treated as another instrument.
As someone without a musical bone in his body (apart from massive appreciation), i can tell that this is a masterpiece on many levels.
Emotionally unavailable man laments his romantic shortcomings and recalls his past love's grounded nature, generous care and eventual bitter exhaustion with said emotional unavailability. I love this song
This description resonates.. but all I can think of when hearing this song is a toxic, abusive lover above all.
Some of these comments are just golden❤
Wow. What a description. I’m both honored and offended since I relate to this song so much.
His accent on this song 😍
It's pure bliss
I'm really curious why he lets it out on this song so much more than any other
@@jodiebug1 because he loves us and knows we swoon to it?
@@jodiebug1 This song seems to be heavily based on Irish folk songs (the instrumental too) so it seems to match. Much of his other music is influenced by American blues and it R&B so he sings with an accent more influenced by that.
Singing like a bard boat it no
Hozier is easily the best songwriter of the 21st century, in terms of lyrics, melody, and guitar work , and it’s not even close.
It's amazing how evocative his songs are.. he takes you to Ireland. You instantly picture yourself sitting on a meadow, you can almost feel the wind on your face - totally in the moment, content.
there’s something about hozier love songs that’s like the feeling of falling in love, but knowing you're incapable of it, knowing "i love you" is a death sentence, the trumpets signaling the end of the world, and being unable to resist anyway, loving and ruining everything anyway. or something like that.
Amen
Dear Hozier
Your music always gives me this strange feeling of comfort and makes me feel loved
Bulletproof Love so much pain and the know what time are you thinking about it for sometime and still believe it is true Amen
@@ms.joanneadomaviciajr3188 amen
Ever since it was released with the NCP ep I've wanted to throw myself into a thorn bush
Strangely, I can relate to that
omg. so accurate
Jessica Johnson i was thinking the same!! 😅
Lmaoooooo
[Verse 1]
I couldn't utter my love when it counted
Ah, but I'm singing like a bird 'bout it now
And I couldn't whisper when you needed it shouted
Ah, but I'm singing like a bird 'bout it now
[Chorus]
Words hung above, but never would form
Like a cry at the final breath that is drawn
Remember me, love, when I'm reborn
As a shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn
[Verse 2]
I'd no idea on what ground I was founded
All of that goodness is going with you now
Then when I met you, my virtues uncounted
All of my goodness is going with you now
[Chorus]
Dragging along, follow in your form
Hung like the pelt of some prey you had worn
Remember me, love, when I'm reborn
As the shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn
[Verse 3]
I fled to the city with so much discounted
Ah, but I'm flying like a bird to you now
Back to the hedgerows where bodies are mounted
Ah, but I'm flying like a bird to you now
[Chorus 3]
I was housed by your warmth, thus transformed
By your grounded and giving and darkening scorn
Remember me, love, when I'm reborn
As the shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn
Absolutely love the lyrics, remember me love when I am reborn, hits so hard and is my favourite line of entire song.
Poet.
Reading this just solidified that this man is litrally writing poetry, and God is it beautiful
I have heard many songs in my life. But this I would call a masterpiece.
Many of Hoziers songs are. He’s a musical genius and I’ve never used that word to describe any musician I’ve ever heard. His music transcends audio, it’s an experience, ethereal
@@justgame5508 well put.
God I feel so lucky to have been born at a time when I am able to witness this exquisite human being/god.
Instead of thinking about a new way of expressing what his music does to me, I am just liking all of your comments. I completely agree with you all.
Edit, it's not just me either, it's my kids as well. We love your music Hozier.
I'm trying to learn this song but it's really hard to get through it without crying. what an incredible song.
Same I just started learning it and the tab almost has more letters then numbers😭😭😭😭 he's so skilled to be able to play it so effortlessly
Damn he's so talented, his voice, song lyrics and the guitar DAMN HE'S FLAWLESS
Just one of the greatest singer-songwriters and musicians to ever do it. A damn genius.
He’s not underrated, he’s appreciated by a lucky group of humans beings, like a treasure.
Absolutely. Amen!
The thing I love about this video: it starts with him and his guitar and you’re mesmerized by how beautiful it is, then the camera pans towards the piano and you realize it’s there, then it goes to the drummer and you’re like oh the drums have been there this whole time too. Then the violin comes into the shot. It’s enough to make a grown man cry.
Hozier's music is so beautiful that it disarms you, then rips your heart open with the sheer raw sadness underneath.
But you know, it's a kind of sadness that only exists because the things we've lost are beautiful, or treasured. There's a certain kind of hope in finally letting our walls down to feel it - feeling the loss of someone you loved is infinitely better than forgetting what love felt like.
The day my mom died, this song was on loop in my head. I was flying in a plane to get to her, but she died before I got there. I kept hearing remember me love when I’m reborn. 🥺
The album is wholly beautiful, but Shrike is in another level. I'm so in love.
He couldn't whisper, when I needed it shouted. The words hung above, but never would form ... and all of my goodness is gone with him now. You're free to choose, but those consequences will have you bleeding out. Much love Hozier listeners ❤ This is what music is meant to do. Move you. R.
I feel like I've claimed the same band as my favorite since 7th grade, but I think as a 30 year old man in 2019 I gotta finally realize that Hozier is my favorite musical artist ever. This beyond slaps, it gently resonates in your soul until you are forever changed.
I didn’t realize how much I’m captured by Hozier until the end of last year when Spotify sent out the year in review and told me my most listened-to artist was Hozier.
I honestly had no clue that he was taking up so much of my music space. I listen to every genre out there from classical to metal to kpop. For years I was obsessed with Tool and deftones. Then punk then edm. And now apparently it’s all background noise since Hozier is taking over. 💜🔥
out of curiosity, what was that favourite band of yours?

This live version is the epitome of everything I love about Andrew's music. I can't articulate what it is about this song and this version that evokes such nostalgia for something that hasn't happened. I can't express how much this song inspires me to get up and feel but also sit down and reflect. maybe its the feeling that is so apparent as he plays the guitar, or the nuances of his accent in the song. But I guess it doesn't matter what it is that I can't articulate...because what this is is art. and art is the best when you can't describe, you can only feel.
lol spiel over continue with your day.
You have just hit the nail on the head
Well said
Yes, this is exactly my thoughts. Although, I could also see him being high. I have no idea, just a thought as how he looks here is how I feel when I'm high and listening to his music.
Literally everyone:
Me: this song instills a feral sense of happiness that I can't explain nor will I ever understand. I feel like a tree and at the same time the wind blowing through the leaves of the tree, my third eye has opened.
This song is medicine. So beautiful
Thank you Andrew for singing this wonderful song from your heart......
Used to wake up before sunrise, grab coffee, and play soft hozier songs while watching the sun rise, warm coffee in hand. This has absolutely made it on the playlist
One of the best singers of this generation. His voice is clear and enunciated, beautifully nuanced, tender, and then suddenly transforms into raw power and emotional intensity. Gorgeous song.
2:22 !!!!!!!!!!! Shivers every time, I love the way he yells this verse. It's so pure and emotional and there's something ancient about this song in general...
his guitar skills make me wanna cry
This song doesnt bring memories of lovers for me.
I think of my dad and the difficulties i felt in that relationship tell him how I felt, to forgive him, to love him while it still mattered. And now that he's gone it makes me guilty that I didnt tell him these things while he was still here and alive.
I'm a simple fan; I see a new performance by Hozier, I like it.
Hozier is walking poetry. How can a man ignite parts of your soul you never knew existed with merely his voice. I’ve never been more in love with the richness of an Irish accent until bow🥺🧡With love from South Africa
33 years old and this talented. Dudes an alien. Love it.
I don't understand how a human being can be so talented
I think it's impossible for any guitar player to not acknowledge how great Hozier's skills are
It's not a matter of skill but style and creativity. He's intermediate in technique and isn't proficient in music theory but he knows how to write very beautiful melodies.
Romi C Indeed, and that's what I meant to say I guess
@@romicor9 agree on the technique not being amazing but he studied Music at Trinity College Dublin so he is proficient in theory.
i seriously cannot believe what an amazing song he wrote. This is unbelievable.
how is he singing so strongly at like every range ever this man isn’t real
The intensity of the lyrics though, what a beautiful song this is
who knew god was irish
I did.. LoL
everyone, after watching this video
The English hence the occupation :)
The Irish.
his accent is so prominent in live performances we are truly blessed
His voice is so incredibly powerful and absolutely angelic. It is such a privilege to live at the same time as Hozier is creating music 💜💜💜
This song gives me goosebumps...beautiful emotion, chords, a definite Irish country feel, then the relationship element in the lyrics. Music that moves!
No more talk of the album being underrated. Hozier's "Wasteland, Baby" had debuted as number 1 on the Billboard 200. (The first album went to number 2). First rock album, as well, to hit the top spot in 3 months. Thrilled for him - and for signs that people are listening to actual music!
Shrike showcases Hozier's vision at its most glorious - a pain that's both deeply personal and universally relatable, sung in his incomparable vocal style - to make it be felt more than heard, and leave you in a place of strength all in its short runtime of a few minutes. He delivers with such raw abandon no matter what version of this song you hear - with heartbreaking authenticity, making his music a testament to the human experience.
Yet, Hozier remains sp underappreciated, often misunderstood by critics who label him as esoteric - a polite way of saying he's strange. But this couldn't be further from the truth. He embodies a voice of truth, conveying universal human experiences of love, hope, and broken dreams.
His iconic artistry transcends geographical and generational boundaries, complemented by a persona and public image that's just as heartfelt as his music. It takes heroic strength to confront and own one's devastating vulnerabilities, transforming the profound emotion into art that resonates with everyone.
The poetry, the musicianship, the perfect voice, amazing
this is the best recording of this song.
The imagery in this song is just stunning... and when the fiddle comes in?? Perfect.
Pure poetry.
“Remember me, love, when I’m reborn
As a shrike to your sharp & glorious thorn” part gets me every time! 😪❤️
Got the privilege to hear this wonderful man live. Still feeling blessed. That high note 'remember me love' brings tears to my eyes every time.
An absolutely amazing song. I'm in awe of his talent.
Just wow. This Irish godly being channeling the heavens to all of us in such a raw way.
2:21 i absolutely love this part in the studio version... oh lord above, it's even better live... what a king, really
I can't help feeling that for all his hits, this is the song he will be remembered for... this performance in particular. Like, 50 years from now people will look back on this video and go "That was when music moved you from start to end...."
This man is heavenly in song.. enchanting in charm..otherworldly. No other male artist do I find so naturally beautiful and real...
his guitar playing is irresponsibly good. and I love this song.
I had never heard this song or really even listened to this band when one day my boyfriend and I were driving when shrike came on radio
I began to cry and truly did not even know the words or why I was crying
My guy looked at me a said this is David (my deceased husband) speaking to you! I looked up the lyrics and had a deep cry and beautiful healing moment
Thank you for this incredibly connected song ! The messages come from all channels ❤
The changes continue to flow for me now😊
Pretty :)
I always love watching Hozier play his guitar. His finger work looks so cool!
Ok for years I was obsessed with his singing but now having bought a guitar and finding it incredibly difficult to strum even one cord I am so appreciative and amazed by his mastery of the guitar and finger picking. This man is pure talent.
There's something about this version that is particularly incredible
Why is this the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard
He is a gift, we must thank Him.
He could sing about anything and it would be beautiful. One of the best artists out there.

Well whaww...again and again he continues to bless our ears with this euphoric angelic voice. This album is one of the best of the year and there is no denying pure raw talent.

So gifted. Gawd. This guy must have made a pact with something cause the dude just gets after it. I’m amazed
Listened to this the whole way around the North Coast 500 route of Scotland last week. Amazing song which accompanied all the breath-taking costal scenery beautifully 💙
How does this only have 28k likes? Everyone should hear this song.
I am in absolute awe of this man. You can physically see him get lost in his music while he's playing the guitar, his voice is incredible and the way he has full control over it even more. Sometimes I really wonder how someone this talented can exist. I hope there will be more music by the bogman soon :)
This voice rises from out of the struggle and cleansings of Ireland's spirit, through its many changing centuries.
The song itself nests in that history and transcends a romantic love while also encompassing it. Musicians rarely reach such resonating truths. I'm glad that since we lost Leonard, we've got this honest voice to help keep us faithful.
Hozier is phenomenal at live performances, you can feel his soul through the acoustics
This song is one of my favorites from Wasteland, Baby. I’ll be seeing him live for the first time in NYC in November.
I am SO jealous !! send some love to the stage for me
You’re in for a huge treat. The man is unreal live
I live in New York City I'm gonna try to figure out how to go
Indeed, send a lot of love to the stage. Sing along with him and the band, and if you get to meet him don't forget to say 'Thank you' on behalf of all of us around the world.
