On "My Car Story" we're in Chicago on 8-29-19.
We're looking at a 1959 Studebaker Scotsman Pickup in Hawaii Green Paint. The car comes with the optional 259 CI V8 engine.
The car's Owner is Scott Vermillion. Scott’s had this car since 2006. Scott shares he was looking for a station wagon, and saw this Pickup thought this one being a “Scotsman” would be good for Scott.
    ENJOY!

My uncle bought one of these when I was 6 years old. They were really cool looking unlike the other manufacturers models. It wasn't long before him or one of my older cousins tore the rear-end out trying to pull a stump. They must have thought it was a tractor.

    Amazing truck!
I remember long ago, one family who owned one of these trucks close to my house, for me, who always loved cars and had an acute eye for details, the rarest thing of that truck was the shape of the bed!
Grandpa used to say that Studebakers were undestructible machines.
    Thanks Lou!

Identical to my 1957 except the motor. And Mine was a Milk Delivery and Pickup Truck and had over a Million Miles logged on it when I bought it in 2008. With a Completely Rebuilt Engine. But now I drive it as a woody Hillbilly Camping woody Camper. It gets Trophies usually in every show. It is painted with Can Paint.

I took many pictures of it, even went to his house, and am still in contact with this man!! Thanks to you and Scott for a peek at a beautiful 'Studie'
on a cold Miller Beach day.
Always a big fan of this truck because it's timeless styling remained intact for a decade or so. Although finances were also a factor, the swept back windscreen and the streamlined cab were ahead of their time at intro.
When they were fighting the Germans in WW2, Studebaker contracted to build heavy trucks, for the Russian army, mostly 6x6s which retaned the light truck cab.
That same styling with the raked windshield is being used on Russian built trucks to this day.
Warm wishes for the winter brother, keep on showin' us sunshine in the meantime...

After Studebaker designed and introduced this truck body style in 1949, they did not put too much more money into supporting their truck line. By 1959, this truck was considered terribly dated by comparison to the competition. So the sales numbers were not high and seeing a Studebaker truck was not common.

The Studebaker Scotsman line was quite popular, they sold over 20,000 which was good business for Studebaker. They reacted to the recession of 1957-58 before any of their competitors, bringing out the Scotsman while they retooled for the 1959 Lark. The Lark was the first compact car, and beat the competition from Ford (Falcon) Chevrolet (Corvair) and Plymouth (Valiant) to market by a full year.
The Lark was the last success they had, after that sales slowly petered out until they stopped production in 1965.

Thanks again Lou! ... I had forgotten the 1962(?) Studebaker trucks we drove at TriCounty Game Preserve in Indiana( the State bought Studebakers to help save ,etc): my Summers of 1962/64 etc. Interestingly, about as basic as this: the steering and 3/on/tree were really stiff, etc. INDIANA Department of Conservation GREEN, NOT Hawaiian, etc. Anyways, probably not much left of some Studebaker truck or Auto Lines, always fascinating,......and some high Performance or exotic. Just recently saw a stunning Studebaker pickup at a show during Labor Day weekend. Forget the exact year; I think she was perhaps a '46. It was done two-tone in black and "Richard Petty" blue similar to Mopar's Basin Street Blue. Actually it may have even been that color. It was absolutely pristine.

I’m voting for the 64 R2 cause Avanti was so different from what Studebaker was doing up until 1962. The Scotsman cars and trucks were as basic and cheap as could be, and really didn’t set sales records. It was the 59 Lark that blew the doors off the South Bend barn! So while the new Lark was creating buzz, their aged truck line was languishing. Based on the success of the 59 Lark there was some money to do a kinda new truck. Voila, the Champ was born - front half Lark, and back half pickup bed. Like the 59 Scotsman, the 60 Champ was just as attention grabbing. But all things considered, the Scotsman looked more like a truck. Kinda interesting that the green truck’s paint is somewhat similar to the Avanti’s. One lucky owner to have two incredible vehicles that look and sound sensational!

Awh c'mon Lou Scotsman isn't a derogatory term, it's humor. Taking offense is so easy why not have a laugh like you and I both did and I have Scottish ancestry. Anyway, sweet truck. Is this your first? Poor old Studebaker. They made some great cars but it was tough to go up against the big 3. Thanks for sharing this one with us. BTW in 1959 Studebaker made a promotional model pickup with 4 wheel drive that they tried to sell to utility companies etc. God bless them, they went down swinging...Avanti R2 anyone??? If you don't love trunk & treats you ain't a "car guy" (stole that term LOL)

Yes, that 4-wheel drive Studebaker truck is the one to have... they had a NAPCO conversion. It added about $1000 to the cost of the truck (that was only around $2000). 335 were built between December 1957 and December 1962. This Scotsman is my first Studebaker truck (beside the Avanti, I have owned three other Studebakers in the past)... I love it!

Very cool. I wish Studebaker were still around so we could see a better looking pick up..... I mean, the big 3 have lost their minds. I think GM is trying to build the best looking brick, Ford thinks headlights make the truck, and Dodge continues the "Joe Camel" snout front end with crap quality control..... I wish Desoto, Studebaker, and Pontiac were back in the mix for some crazy style injection into the industry. Beautiful Truck!

Studebaker didn't produce many pickup trucks - probably were losing money on them, which is interesting because the company built many larger trucks for the war effort. Ford and Chevy were in a sales war, International Harvester and Dodge truck sales also suffered.
