Great video. I just watched it and installed new spark plugs on my wife's 2015 Mazda 6. And going to do the same for my daughter's 2015 Mazda 3 in a few weeks. Saved everybody a lot of $$$. Thank you!
Hey thanks for showing me this. When I was young and cars were uncomplicated, I used to do these things myself. But now that I am a lot older, and cars more complicated, I thought it would be more difficult. After my Mazda dealer said the cost would be $323 to change plugs, I watched this video. I'm going to tackle it myself this morning. Thanks.
Cars are a pain to work on now. In the 80s tune-ups were easy. Cap, rotor, plugs wires, PCV valve, oil change air filter and you were good ta go! Man Steve and I remember the good ole days..lol
Hands down best informed video on plugs (needed a refresher to teach my wife), thanks for doing it right the first time! Now to run to the store for some dielectric grease.
So was it really this simple to change the spark plugs? My dealer wants to charge me $325. But the dealership sold me new plugs for only $85. So if I can do it myself I will also save 200 plus dollars.
Lol! He took out the coils 1,2,3,4 backwards 4,3,2,1. But he did say it doesn’t matter. So I guess it doesn’t. Great Video! Thank you for doing this as it saved me $275 labor by doing it myself.
Thank you. After watching your video I felt confident in changing the spark plugs of my 2015 Mazda 6. After I completed the job I took it on a road trip and noticing improvement of almost four miles per gallon.
Thank you! We've followed the video replacing spark plugs with new NGK ones and applying all the Permatex lubricants and greases as indicated. The car is running happily!
Just wanted to drop a thanks here. Perfect video in length and the info was spot on. The step by step was easy to understand and I did it exactly as shown with perfect results. I ended up not having a 9/16ths spark plug socket, so I took the rubber thingy out of a 5/8ths spark plug socket, cut it down a bit in size and put it in a long 14mm and it was good to go.
I just had my oil and filter changed in my 2015 6 and the service rep said because I had almost 80,000 miles on it, and Mazda recommended a plug change at 75K. I asked how much and they quoted me almost $500 -- that's over $100 a plug. I passed. And after watching this video I'm glad I did, although I don't plan on changing my plugs until I see a noticeable change in performance, starting, or gas mileage. We just got back from a 10 day 1,500 mi road trip and are still getting upper 30's mpg on the highway even driving in pouring rain. The 6 is rated 38 mpg hgwy by the EPA and that's exactly what we got over the last part of our trip.
I would recommend changing the plugs at that mileage. If you leave them in there too long they might be more difficult to get out. You don't have to go crazy with fancy expensive spark plugs, just get the factory replacements. Hope this helps you out.
I have been getting racked over the coals paying for sparkplugs and ignition coils on this damn 2014 mazda 6. I'm about to learn how to do this stuff myself. I had to replace spark plugs twice, and replace each coil, only 138,000 miles on it.
If you follow our auto repair video that shows you how to replace the spark plugs on a Mazda 6 you should be able to do this on your own. This is pretty easy to do on this car, you should be done in under an hour.
It should be fine. These are all things you can do to help your replace these items the next time. The silicon helps to prevent moisture from getting into the wires. Hope this helps you out.
Hello, My ‘15 Mazda 6 has 76,000+ miles, I haven’t done any major work on it. The spark plugs + ignition coils haven’t been replaced. So I changed them at the same time?
You need an 8MM socket for the ignition coils. This socket it is fairly inexpensive and it will have a ratchet and some extensions for you too amzn.to/3fxsop2 Here is the 9/16 spark plug socket amzn.to/2WexCic
If you look to the left of the first ignition coil there’s a wire leading to a plug, I’m asking cause mine looks to be leaking oil a little bit but I can’t figure out what the part is called
It looks like it should be 0.044 according to online resources. Check your owner's manual to cofim for your specific year.make. model and engine size. Hope this helps you out.
If that is what the manufacture is recommending then you can change them at 75,000. If it were me I would more than likely change them at around 40,000 miles.
I'm no mechanic (I am an Electrical Engineer), but I don't see that it would be an issue since there should only be voltage on the plugs & leads while the engine is running. With the engine off, there's no power there. Professionals are free to correct me if I'm wrong (not that you need my permission :^D )
Paid $70 for spark plugs and saved $500 by not going to the dealership. Thank you for making this!
Glad this video helped out and saved you some cash.

The dealership quoted $529 for spark plug replacement! It took 20 minutes and saved me $420. Thanks for the video!
That's ridiculous. Yeah this is an easy job you can do in the driveway.

Thank you so much. My mazda 6 now has over 100k km on and I think it’s time for some new spark plugs.
Good luck!

Excellent learning experience.

Thanks, I can do this one.
Thanks for watching our auto repair video that shows you how to replace the spark plugs in a Mazda 6
What is the torque spec on tightening the spark plus? Thanks.
Other yt mechanik say,14-15 f/p
I've seen people do 1/2 turn from hand tight, whilst others torque to 20nm. I still don't know which way is correct
It should be out on the internet. I haven't had any issues using the method shown.
When you tighten the new spark plugs back on do you want them snug or as tight as possible?
Just snug them up, you do not need to crank down on them. If you follow the video you should be fine. Hope this helps you out.
Three quotes to change my spark plugs: $580, 600, 520. Spent $30 bucks on plugs and 20 minutes labor. Thanks!
Glad to hear our auto repair video that shows you how to replace the spark plugs on a Mazda 6 helped to save you so much money! Have a great day!
Hello! I wanted to ask confirm that the socket used is a 9/16 socket? I would need an extender too ?
I believe that was the size.
If I were to change my sparks and I didn’t use the silicon, or the grease and all that, will it not work?
It should be fine. These are all things you can do to help your replace these items the next time. The silicon helps to prevent moisture from getting into the wires. Hope this helps you out.
Perfect - Thank-You
You're welcome!
does it make sense to replace them if they are in good shape?
If they have a lot of miles on them I would.
Hello,
My ‘15 Mazda 6 has 76,000+ miles, I haven’t done any major work on it. The spark plugs + ignition coils haven’t been replaced. So I changed them at the same time?
I would do the plugs, and only replace the coils if one fails.
How do you know if a coil fails
Great video, can you put link what did you use for the treat...on the coil and what was the spray...
Thanks for watching Jay. Here is a link to the silicone spray in our Amazon store: amzn.to/304QFgJ
Also would the process be similar for the new models with the 2.5 turbo engine?
It might be a similar procedure.
Can you please link me to the tools needed to switch the spark plugs thanks. Appreciate it !
You need an 8MM socket for the ignition coils. This socket it is fairly inexpensive and it will have a ratchet and some extensions for you too amzn.to/3fxsop2
Here is the 9/16 spark plug socket amzn.to/2WexCic
What is the name of the lubricant you're putting on the spark plug.
Never seize. Here is a link to it on Amazon amzn.to/3FBb55g
Damn I greased the plastic part of the plug before watching this video. Does it make a difference?
Just saw this comment. Did everything turn out okay?
What length is that extension? Will a 6inch extension work???
It should be long enough.
What is that plug to the left of cylinder one? I can’t figure it out
Not sure what you are referring to
If you look to the left of the first ignition coil there’s a wire leading to a plug, I’m asking cause mine looks to be leaking oil a little bit but I can’t figure out what the part is called
Bawwwstin love it! lol
Thanks for checking us out Max
What’s the gap level for these spark plugs ?
It looks like it should be 0.044 according to online resources. Check your owner's manual to cofim for your specific year.make. model and engine size. Hope this helps you out.
socket 9/16 or is it 14mm?
The correct size should be mentioned in the video.
You can clearly tell the mechanic is from Bass-tan Mas (Boston, Mass)
Close...lol
What is the thickness gauge disc called? Where can I find it?
You can find a spark plug gapper at any parts store.
How many miles or km can these plugs last and need changing?
You should typically change spark plugs around every 30,000 miles.
High quality sparkplug can last 100,000 miles before replacing
I believe they are due to be replaced at the 75,000 mile service
9/16 ... you said but i was told 14mm please help is it 14mm or 9/16
It's 9/16 I just did mine. Bought it on Amazon for $10
Thanks sorry for the confusion.
why the anti lock tho, alls the people say never to use it unless the manufacturer it self says it needs it
It will help to prevent the spark plugs from becoming frozen to the head. Steve and I have been fixing cars for over 30 years together.
Owner's manual says change spark plugs every 75,000 miles. Should I just do it earlier?
If that is what the manufacture is recommending then you can change them at 75,000. If it were me I would more than likely change them at around 40,000 miles.
@@HomeOwnerRepair Thanks! I just changed them today. I'll be changing them every 40,000 miles.
"Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental."
direct from NGK themselves
Never had an issue in 35+ years of doing tune-ups applying a little anti-seize to spark plug threads.
whats that brown stuff at 7:36? copper paste?
It's anti seize. Here is a link to it in our Amazon store

Battery it's not disconnected ?

You can take the negative battery cable off while servicing the spark plugs. It is not going to hurt anything.
Use a 9/16 Spark plug socket 3:04 not the standard 5/8
Thanks for watching.

Which is cylinder one ? Mine is misfiring
Did you replace your coils ?
I currently do not have that information avaiable
What is the nemec,?
What part of the video are you referring to?
4-cilinder is easy. Try on a V6
