It was a blast! A lot of really hard work (staying in character for up to several hours at a time is mentally exhausting, and those costumes are exactly as heavy and sweaty as you would expect!!) but seeing even just one kids day become a little bit brighter because of you is the most rewarding feeling in the world. The job really was a dream come true.
I performed as Alice, although I did catch a chance to play as Wendy once too (the actresses for each cross over, and we often play both roles. At the time, Wendy was a rare character in the park with the exception for parades, so playing her was pretty uncommon.) I did also have to get into the fur costumes- the big, sweaty animal suits- and for that I was either Chip or Dale, depending on the shifts. All of the roles were equally fun, but I must admit I'd chose a dress over a fur suit any day.
It was the best experience of my life! I was only a seasonal performer, but I hope to someday return to the job. At the parks, the term "friends" are used to describe our relationship with characters, as opposed to saying "Well I was Cinderlla," because it helps us preserve the magic, and no one can just BE Cinderella! I got to be very close friends with Alice, and on one rare occasion got to spend a little time with Wendy. I also hung out with two naughty little chipmunks quite frequently c;
I agree! Even in school, our cheap mascot had a little fan in the head of the costume. Though, it might make the outside of the costume cold too, and it would be weird to have guests getting hugs from a big furry ice pack. Also, considering how frequently the costumes get used and end up needing to be washed, it's simply more convenient to avoid any fancy cooling systems that would make that more difficult. At least the shifts are short and the costumes are relatively lightweight, so it's okay!
Thank you! I find it irritating when guests try things like this and are the same type of people who give Disney a bad rep. I was a cast member and this drove me crazy.
Most often Alice, and I did some work with fur characters as well. I also played Wendy one time. I would have loved to worked with her more, but she's such a rare character :c She was hardly ever out as long as I worked there.
Congratulations!! You are going to have so much fun if you get the job. I would love to work at one of the foreign parks, especially Tokyo. Paris Disneyland is supposed to be really really beautiful. I've never been, but I want to visit!
I left voluntarily to move back to my home state with my family, though I plan on returning someday. Typically they will keep you working until you quit/get fired/lose the position, just like any other job. They run checks every 6 months or so to make sure you still fit "the look," if you begin to show age/grow in height/other they may either lay you off or assign you new characters. I have known performers who worked 9+ years as face characters, so it all depends. n___n
I would definitely assume it goes both ways, as guests interact with cast members just as often as they do with the characters. Everyone's trying to uphold the Disney image, so it only makes sense that all cast members have to be aware of what they say, and how it could negatively affect the company.
Also, you have to audition. You can either attend a public audition or, if you are a part of Disneys College Program, they have auditions just for the students.
Well, yes and no to that. If we were to be laughing at something, we would have to do our absolute best to get back into character as fast as we can. Generally though, people won't notice when it's something so small. But for example in the case of an injury, there are special codes we could use to excuse ourselves from situations where character might be broken. But in front of guests, it is reason for immediate termination to break character.
Ahh, I see what you mean. When I heard the term "break character" the scenario that came to my mind was having a visible reaction to something completely outside of character- for example, if someone were to faint in front of you, you are generally required to keep completely quiet while your character attendant removes you from the situation and it's handled by someone else. To start panicking or reacting would be considered officially breaking character.
I can't say that I do, I was hired on the spot during my last audition. If you haven't yet been asked to do a costume "test" basically, they might be having you come in now to do that, although I haven't personally heard of any instances where they make you do that on a callback. Basically, they'll just put you in a costume and a wig and see how they think you look as the character... But yeah, I don't know much about callbacks. Although if they costume you, you've pretty much got the job. c:
When I was younger I waited in a line forever to meet Ariel because I always wanted to be like her. Growing up I believed in Mermaids and fantasy and she was really nice to me for the 5 seconds that we got to talk. XD But I did remember it so it paid off.
Unfortunately, since I never played Sally nor did I know any performers who did, there's not a lot of information I can give you. She is a seasonal character, and only comes out around Halloween. You may want to audition close to September/October to get her role? You also must meet her height requirements. I believe she's around 5'5". It's true, you don't get to pick your character, but it definitely helps to have a clear goal in mind!! Good luck sweetie!!
Well if you haven't gone through training yet (which I'm guessing they'll do closer to your actual employment) you'll find that it's not by any means an easy or carefree job. It's a lot of focus, work, heavy makeup and costumes, etc. But it's 100% worth it, and it's the most rewarding job in the world. Most likely they'll put you in fur character costumes like Mickey/Minnie/Pluto etc. before you get to play with the Princesses, but you'll have the time of your life. Good luck and have fun!
I auditioned a couple times before making it through. Eventually I figured out through experience what I needed to do to have a great audition and I made the cut c:
I'm a little over 5', so I'm "mouse height", so I know for a fact at some point I will probably be friends with Mickey, since he's all over the place. That really helps though; thank you!!
I want to be Wendy in the worst way (she's my favorite) or Alice since she is more common, but if they asked me to be a fairy I definitely wouldn't object!
Don't worry about it! What height are you? I'm actually just a tad bit over 5'4", but they placed me in the young girl height range anyway, and I know some girls who were over the princess height limit, that were still cast as princesses. Disney does make exceptions. But that means you're still clear to be a pixie or a young girl if you're too short for princesses, and being a dancer is incredibly fun. Doing parades was my absolute favorite, even though it wasn't really dancing for me!
It really does get stressful!! Luckily the girls in this video didn't mean any harm, but you can never be too sure. It's better to just improvise and come up with something that you KNOW is safe, than take the risk and soil your characters name.
I want Ariel to say "Look Lady, this is just a job. I have two kids and i have to feed them by dressing up and taking pictures all day. Take a picture of this *middlefiinger* I DONT NEED YOUR SHIT RIGHT NOW!" Just the disney Fourth wall shattered
You could still audition to be Mulan or Silvermist (assuming you are a girl haha?) and you could also play fur characters (Mickey, Minnie, Donald, etc) since no one sees what you look like.
Yes, they are incredibly hot. They provide us with underclothes to wear while we work in the full body suits, which is just a grey cotton t-shirt and shorts, and that's as cool as it gets. The suits are exactly as hot and sweaty as you'd imagine they'd be, especially in the Florida heat. Face characters have it equally as bad, since we have to wear heavy dresses and wigs and makeup, and our shifts last longer that fur.
0:49 Ariel looks like Katy Perry. Anyone agree?
Wow kudos to the Ariel for coming up with "Keep Calm and Stay Splashy" that was really good.
I love the mad hatters reaction and how Ariel was so unsure! Nice save with Splashy
I AM SO ON HATTER'S SIDE. You CAN keep calm and stay MAD! How you say? Well, that's the best secret of all authors, animators and designers! ;)

This is my favorite Hatter I've ever seen.
Thank you! I find it irritating when guests try things like this and are the same type of people who give Disney a bad rep. I was a cast member and this drove me crazy.

Bert
I'm excited for you!! Good luck!!

I loved it. Amazing.
I had no idea that there were characters walking around disney world that had to stay in character! Amazing!
I've been to Disneyland Paris a great number of times (for a 20 year old who lives near Amsterdam I'd say about ten is a great number >

I absolutely LOVE the mad hatter's reaction!
I'm in love with Bert (even though in this video he sounds Australian lol)
I met that exact Ariel. I love Katy Perry, and Ariel is my favorite princess. So I was so excited, she was really nice and personable. :)
I was an Alice/Wendy face characters. But I often doubled as fur characters as well.
That last guy was a cu-tie pie!
I love that Bert he is so cute! :)
haha I love how Alice is always like "see what I have to deal with" haha
OMG that Hatter
MY LOVE FOR THIS ALICE!
The guy at the end...perfecto!
I'm too short to be a princess, but I'm really hoping to be a dancer or wendy/alice at some point. Thank you!! I'm really excited!
its funny now that i work here...its cool to see these people out and about more often or even break with them too :)
I can't say that I do, I was hired on the spot during my last audition. Oh geez, I would think Disney would look into getting some kind of a cooling thing inside the outfits. x)
I was the Alice/Wendy face character, but I also did certain fur characters like Chip and Dale.
When I was younger I waited in a line forever to meet Ariel because I always wanted to be like her. Growing up I believed in Mermaids and fantasy and she was really nice to me for the 5 seconds that we got to talk. XD But I did remember it so it paid off.
The mad hatter guy is really good.

Ariel kinda looks like Katy Perry, does anyone agree?
Oh wait I just realized someone else comment that LOL

Whoever homeboy is at 0:53... DAMN.
I'll keep an eye out for him next time I go to Disneyland.

@fivelostgirls Maybe they wanna stay more in character? Anyways, this is a cute video :D
Ariel is beautiful
Reggie! I love that Hatter
He's the best! :P
Aussie Bert = pure love~
I auditioned a couple times before making it through. Eventually I figured out through experience what I needed to do to have a great audition and I made the cut c:
Alice was amazingly cute.
Keep calm and chive on
It probably is!! Face actors/actresses typically play more than one role. One day she could play Ariel, the next she might be Cinderella.
I was wondering the same thing!!
That one always does.
KEPP CALM AND STAY.. SPLASHY :D
I want to work there. But as a villain. It just looks more fun.
Keep Calm and Stay Splashy!
I think this Ariel is also Rapunzel in briberry's Valentines day video :D
That Ariel played Rapunzel. I saw her!
Bert said it.
Haha keel calm and stay splashy
Alice also plays Tinkerbell. :)
0:58 ... well hello there :B hahahaha omg
omg the last guy what a babe
Someone should tell the mad hatter that it's their unbirthday lol
yes u an b crazy and calm
that is one AUSSIE Bert!!

I met the same and Alice and the same Bert!
sounds like her too
I guess it's either Bert or a Dapper Dan....
holy crap the guy at the end looks like liam - gale from hunger games
@Ariana Daley how old do you have to be to play a character and how do you become one?
Love hatter always!
Haha, Bert sounds australian!
I'm going down in the fall to be a character performer! What is it like?
I think it was just a dapper dan
that would be nice
Ariel didn't handle it well....she made a face
the girl that was Ariel is also the girl who plays repunzel!
And have her lose a job as well. You are SO FUCKING STUPID!!
Look up Valentines day at disneyland. She is Rapunzel in that :)
This is why I don't try to get characters to say anything anymore.
hahaha I shouldn't have shown this to my daughter's now they keep asking me to go....Next year I'm taking them
They wanted to keep to character which is why they probably chose their own way of saying it XD
