As a Spartan fan I think you got a great coach. We just hired a new coach as well. I hope we can both rise up in the Big 10. I was a big Bob Knight fan. Next to MSU, I always root for Indiana.
You guys are getting a good coach who knows how to win, now will that be enough to win in the Big Ten? Not sure about that but he is a solid choice and gives you guys a shot at success. Having said that don't expect a guy with a lot of personality as he is lacking in that department a bit.
It's all about recruiting, will he be able to get the players to come to a perennial losing program and make them a competitor to Michigan, OSU and even Penn State? Highly unlikely. He may surpass Purdue, they are not a contender anymore, but not the big 3. He'll be gone in five years.
Ugh!! Here are the challenges as I see them. One - age. Takes time to develop program. As in years. At 62, he will be ready for retirement just as program gets its footing. Then what? Two - recruiting. He will be recruiting for the same Midwest athletes as MSU, Wisconsin, Purdue, Illinois. Iowa, etc. any experience there? Contacts? Network? Three - no power 5 experience. Appreciate his success, but at this level, it will be an uphill battle in every way - Lastly, in the age of transfer portal, NIL is critical. What will he have to offer players? Honestly , was hoping for a PJ Fleck type of guy. While last two years have been less than ideal, he brought respectability to Minnesota. Young, enthusiastic, Midwest connections. Purdue hires Walter’s. Too soon to call it a good hire, but power 5, big 10 experience, recruiting, etc.
