Hi Rachel, many thanks for this video, some great points! Allow me to add a couple more: the app 'Windy' shows different weather layers on a zoomable map - so it's easy to check if the wind is strong and blowing on shore - before you set off - allows last minute adjustment on the best bit of coast to swim off under prevailing conditions. Next - in effect - 'on site risk assessment' before committing to the water - prevailing actual conditions, sea state, temperature, other water users / boats, pollution etc - if it doesn't feel right, if it looks wrong, if in doubt - 'leave it out' and abort the mission, rethink and retry somewhere else or some other time. Too many Mountain Rescues because folk committed even in the face of adverse conditions. Personally, I aim for for a woodland walk after a swim, if needs be, I have a fall back plan if the swim does not look sensible. Very much like your videos - keep them coming!
I’m so excited to have found your channel! I am new to cold water swimming, I’ve already learned a lot from watching a few of your videos. Since getting into wild swimming during the pandemic I feel so uplifted mentally and physically. So grateful!!!
I went on Facebook recently to find some occasional company for winter swims and there were immediately people accusingly me of being irresponsible for swimming alone, even in the summer! Granted I do live in Jersey where our strong tides and currents which mean we must take extra care, but they were unbending in their view which really shattered my confidence. I agree with your preference for solo swimming, many enjoy dip and chat type of swims which involve more talking than swimming and are fun occasionally, but I certainly prefer a decent swim and an opportunity to soak up the stunning views around Jersey. I thank you for your instructional video which confirmed for me that I do everything in my power not to cause trouble; using floats, informing others. The app however is a new one and I shall definitely be using it in the future. You have taught me so many things with your videos and I thank you for this one as it has instilled a renewed determination that I have the right to swim as I like as long as I respect the sea and take my safety seriously.
Hi Rachel, I often swim alone, so I'll keep you company from afar. I bet you're super tidal-aware in Jersey, and what amazing scenery too. Are you on instagram? I'd love to follow your account if it shows the scenery over there...? 🏊😃
@@EverydayAthleteRach its absolutely one eye on the tide over here, I grew up on the beaches and rock pools so am used to dodging them! My insta is @goblinbride1, I'm already following you there, dips_and_chips are a fun Jersey account, I don't know them but they have great photos. X
Is it easy enough to turn from a swimming position to floating on your back for a rest while wearing a tow-float with waist belt, or do they tangle a bit if doing that? Many Thanks.
Jacqueline Anon hi, here’s the link, but is should be in the outdoor swimming playlist, I’m going to check now! How to plan an outdoor swimming adventure th-cam.com/video/3H4IH_zkhLo/w-d-xo.html

Thanks for watching and commenting Stuart. It's taking sensible decisions based on the info available that keeps us safe to swim another day 🏊😄

Thanks Rachel, I’ve recently moved to north west Ireland and the sea is beckoning me.
Hope you can find a nice safe spot to get in and enjoy the water 🏊♀️😀
You were recommended. Very useful videos.
Well thank you for coming on over to check my channel out. Welcome Sue!
Brilliant video, thanks for the tip on that app.
Glad it was helpful. Did you download the app?
Yes, haven't set it up yet, just finished a fish pie.

Yes it is, you may have to slide the belt around your waist a little to do it, but I've never had a problem.
Where’s your video about how to plan a swim? I watched it a while back but can’t see it n your channel now ....

Do
You carry vinegar and bi carb in case of stings in your first aid kit ?
Hi Tim I’ve never thought of that, but it sounds like a good idea, I’ll look into it.
@@EverydayAthleteRach Another useful thing for jellyfish stings is an old credit card that you scrape the area of the sting.
