Thanks for sharing this back in September of 2015. I just picked up a similar computer (actually a dc7900) for free, and was stupid enough to waste ten minutes of my life going to the HP support website for instructions on removing the cover. As you demonstrate at around the 5:25 point in this video, removing the cover is super-easy once you know how to push the buttons! Which brings us to an important life-lesson: When in doubt, go to TH-cam first! If only all of life's problems were this easy to resolve...

I agree that a Linux distro is a great way to test system hardware without fully installing an OS. Great video!! Keep the content coming!!

There is always at least one person who dislikes my videos right off the bat without leaving a reason why. Its really frustrating. Well I guess it is a good thing that my channel is big enough to have a few haters :)

+AA Computers and Technology Don't worry, I read that some dislikes are just fat fingers or someone's 5 year old on their parents phone! It's the subs that count!

+Ashley Vegas Yes! And at any time if I need to destroy sensitive data I just use DBAN and spare the drive. I guess completely destroying the drive gives people that extra drop of assurance.

***** Thank for the suggestion! I actually have a decent current generation gaming system. FX-6300, 16gb DDR-3, GTX-750ti. It runs everything I throw at it just fine, there is no point of upgrading, it would be a large waste of money. I actually might have a project coming up utilizing solar power so I am saving all of my funding for that at the moment (still not 100% sure about it yet though).

+AA Computers and Technology I have a similar machine:
      AMD FX 4300
      GIGABYTE MOTHERBOARD
      1TB HARD DRIVE
      EVGA GEFORCE GTX 750 TI
Can I Ask You A Question? What CPU Clock Is Your AMD FX 6300,
And How Much Cores And Threads Does It Have?
      Mine Has A CPU Clock Of 3.5Ghz - 4.0Ghz
And My CPU Has 4 Cores And 4 Threads
Is That Enough For A Gaming Rig?
      Anyways,Bye!

I've got a DC5750 SFF and I love it! I use mine for a media player in my livingroom and its connected to my TV.... these are some of the nicest computers I've come across surplus.... they run windows 10 great as long as you max out the memory and upgrade the hard drive. I added a second hard drive in mine and use it alot! even though they are old, they still can be used!

  • @wanteds13

With a memory upgrade, a small SSD and Windows 7 this would make a excelent computer for light home and office use.

Yep, my old office had one, and with the SSD and windows 7 it ran great, also maxed out the RAM which helped as well.

I think your videos are great and very informative , and I'd like to thank you for introducing me to the HP DC 7800 , they are marvelous computers , so much so I have 5 of them ! They make wonderful sound production computers , and are so silent and well behaved , that they are a joy to work with. A lot of computers today are just trash , that are noisy , badly put together , and last five minutes , where as these old warhorses just take everything in their stride , and give you one hell of a bang for your buck ! They were made for the future , and run beautifully as they are , but are so easily upgradeable to bang up to date operation and running windows 10 if you wish , so they tick all the boxes . Keep up the good work , you are one cool guy .

Lucky you! You got a whole set for USD 5.
In February 2020, I bought an HP dc7800 Ultra Small Form Factor (CPU unit only) from a used PC dealer for Ringgit Malaysia 300 (equivalent to 72.91 USD). It comes with a 3GHz Core2Duo processor, 3GB RAM, an 80GB hard disk and DVD drive. No monitor, no keyboard, no mouse. The USFF model comes with an external PSU like a notebook and if I recall right it uses a 2.5in HDD. The used PC dealer buys used business PCs, most of which have been disposed of by corporations in their asset refresh cycle and the dealer's technicians clean them up and check them in the workshop before sending them to their sales outlets in town.
I installed Linux Mint 18.3 on it and use it as a second office work PC. It runs fast enough for word processing, etc but surfing the Web with Firefox or Chromium is a a bit sluggish.

I recently got one of these for 10€ in a school sale, my local school is upgrading to newer Acer machines with Celerons so they're ditching their old HP dc7800's! Great news for me! Also bought the monitor and peripherals for an extra 10€! Strong machine I bought! It even came installed with Windows 7, wiped of course for security reasons.

I know why people remove the hard drives. It's that most people probably think that the data isn't totally destroyed until the physical platters are gone. I had a friend who was REALLY paranoid about his data being stolen. So every computer he gave me had no hard drive in it. He doesn't live in my neighborhood anymore, though.

Id recommend putting ssds in this as there is just no air flow in these tiny cases... i had a HDD in it (under the PSU) and the temp was at 42C all the time... put in an ssd and temp is at 30-33C
i use this system as my pfsense router since it is a powerful, quite, & space efficient machine for it :)
i have a lowprofile GB lan installed too

Majority of aspect 4:3 ratio LCD monitors are or have become obsolete. I've seen these monitors at a Goodwill Computer works. Which HP is one of the two top brands I've seen so far. The most likely monitors I've seen more often were the 1708 Dell monitors. They were sold off quickly than any monitor I've seen so far in the store I visited in the summer.

Nice catch. Refurbishers sold until recently dc7800 and 7900 for around 100$ and they were popular. We still use a lot of them with 4GB ram, 120GB SSD and Windows 10 x64. My daily driver is a DC7900 cmt with a quadcore and 8GB ram. Can replace it if i want, but no need yet.

You should not clean the moverboard wiff a vacuum cleaner because of static electricity. Also, Plop boot manager works well for moverboards that won't boot from USB, if that was the problem with the W10 live thumbdrive.

@@whitebeartigtig sure you can, it just has to be a smaller 2.5 drive. And it's going to be floating so just tuck it away somewhere
there's also probably some kind of cd drive replacement 2.5 HDD adapter. I know Dell has them, I would imagine HP has them as well.
