Well done. I have been looking at this pack for a while - I was hoping it would fit one of my HF radios but it might be limited to the vhf/uhf models, which are smaller. Still an interesting pack, though.
The PRC-117G pack is not perfect, but has worked well over the years. Occasionally, there will be sales at a deep discount. I picked up this one in OD Green over two years at half price, even though I really wanted Coyote. I am not sure why that color was discounted. It's a good bag.
Great video with good info. I appreciated hearing the nomenclature on the bags and the breakdown on design. Keep the ideas coming, and the off the cuff videos. I'm putting together a "manpack" myself for some of the out there "hidden gems" here in Florida and some events I'll need to be portable where an HT doesn't cut it power wise.
Thanks! I am normally a Motorola and Hytera person but LOVE the AT 878 portable AND the mobile w/Bluetooth mic/remote. Excellent pricing and decent performance. The only thing they missed ? MDC-1200 for analog signaling. Great idea for the “man pack”. I made up a bunch of antenna cables for friends who saw this video I used RG-400 for the short cables (2-4’ length). Kind of overkill, but durable and excellent shielding. The Anderson powerpole connectors are also excellent. Thanks for introducing us to them a while back. I bought their crimping tool and am very happy with everything so far. Thanks!
The battery box, or lack thereof, was the one problem I was hoping to get solved. This is a game changer for me. Would like to see a couple different size options for that but that's just being greedy at this moment.
I just got a 578 and a 9 AH battery to emulate that setup. I'm going to work out the repeater settings this weekend hopefully. I've had an 878 for about a year. I couldn't find a bag close to yours, but I got a decent one online for like $20. Keep it up, you have a great channel.
I have a FTM6000 in similar setup. I use a small mag mount for vehicle use. I can use the same radio in my personal vehicle, a rental vehicle, my wife’s vehicle, etc. I can take it inside a building, a tent, or to a hilltop. I take a shoulder strap and hook it over the seat. The larger battery will last me a few days at least. Will definitely set up my 578 like this soon.
I like the battery box behind the rig. I was looking for something the same size as my BCT-15X Scanner. I use the Bioenno Power 12V 3Ah along with the Paradan DC to DC converter. These batteries have both the PowerPole and the coaxial power pig tails. They are tied together inside the package. This way the radio cable can stay in place and the charger can top off the battery. A PowerPole Y or just splice it on the battery connectors, either way a fast "grap-n-go" has value. Thanks again for the videos.
I am using the Triband Anytone 578 and the BT01 setup. I am using a IDOGear bag and some rails that I 3D printed. I use the configuration to go between home and my vehicle. Still working on the battery part but this is now the rig I use in my everyday driver. 73
Just saw your comment. Could you direct me to the name of the bag you got? Also what are the rails that you printed? I’m look to do a similar setup with my 578. Thanks.
Nice. Just make sure that you're not running high power with any whips. This setup works best with vehicle mounted antennas, yagis, a roll-up J-pole or a Jungle Antenna. I have some techniques on how to make the whip antenna perform better, but this video is in the backlog. Good luck!
I messed up. I got abs to start my large printing journey with. I have some pla coming in so i can at least mock things up for my ft-100 manpack build. I can use that while I build a very large temperature controlled chamber to make things with the aforementioned abs. It's projects like this that I love seeing. That's a sweet radio, brother. I look forward to more of your content. I hope you're well out there. 🤙🏽
To add charging you could install a Genasun charge controller (it's very light) and then you can use a solar panel or just a 19V laptop PSU in the car or when at home. I built a 12Ah battery pack from scratch and so I know mine can manage full power up to 100W since I used a 40A charge controller, that is sometimes an issue with many of the smaller batteries with in built charge controllers.
I'm new to these radios and I am building my first manpack. I understand the concept. I can figure most of the build. If I could get a parts list of parts needed after the radio?
My biggest issue with this radio as a man pack was having to unplug the hand mic to use a TNC or digirig. Moved to the ftm-6000 now I have packet and voice abilities in one bag.
Working on a manpack now. I have the Anytone 578uvIII. I am looking at the bags and the tall bag looks interesting however it wouldn't stand by itself without pulling it apart. I think I like the bag you made. It doesn't look like you have it in stock so do you still recommend the Helikon-tex e&e? I like to also include backpack straps but haven't seen anything that I like so far.
I been trying to find a radio guy for us here in Georgia. They are elusive for sure lol. I tried local HAM club. Bunch of 80+ year old guys who were very elitists. Hey brother, thank you for all the great content. You’ve been a great source of information for me and my Comms goals. I need help! I can’t seem to find power draw info on the 578. Nothing in the manual, no videos, etc… any idea what those number are? Even a best guess will help. Also, the Armoloq cage info doesn’t give specific dimensions when attached to the radio. Do you have those measurements? (I would be running without that battery pack. I’m putting together a man pack and am trying to plan out my power needs before all of the equipment arrives. (I may switch the computer to something more robust like yours) Going to run a Bioenno with power film solar and charge controller. Like I said, I can’t seem to find any data at all on power draw for the 578. Im also researching various pack options and can’t find dimensions for the cage you use. The Armoloq site dimension info didn’t help. I’ll be going with a large sling bag for the radio equipment as I want the capability to also have a backpack on. But - what i miss in all Prepper-Clips so far is the protection against EMP & HEMP in case of a nuclear war - the stuff has to work in such an Escape-Szenario
See my January video. There's no radio that can do it all. Everyone's needs are different. For my needs, I landed on three that each solve a different problem.
So im currently building my man pack with the AnyTone AT-D578UVIII Plus and had a question I took your advice and ordered the Dakota 12v 10a battery but was wondering what the benefits were to switching to anderson connections than just use the supplied dc power cable that comes with the unit and connect it directly to the battery?
The key disadvantage of digital voice modes is that they suck power during receive - poor choice for battery operation. The ideal manpack will draw 100ma or less during standby receive. In rural environments the best range band will be about 50 mhz - that's in the range of what the military uses, and a full quarter-wave antenna is practical.
"Crack-a-lacking my homies" That was unexpected. The crossbanding feature is always useful in itself. Had to use one at work up until a few weeks ago when the one state-wide linked repeater close to me was repaired. Edit: Also, @13:19. Trying to get rid of your old stuff (I see the No Random Contacts mug and your business card?) The Guerrilla's Guide to the Baofeng is something I read recently, and it does have some useful info outside of the Baofeng stuff.
Someone greeted me with that line recently, so I thought that I would give a try on the video for fun once. I needed some funds for a project that I am working on, so I tried to offload some gear that I've only used a couple of times. As for the book, I bought on a recommendation from someone, but have not had the time to read it. Honestly, I am working on a field manual and I do not want to be influenced by what others have written.
@@TheTechPrepper You are not missing anything by not reading it. Some of the concepts presented in it you have done videos on in the past. Some other things, like One Time Pads and message authencation, are covered on other channels like S2Underground.
Yes. Prolonged RF exposure can have health and safety implicates based on output power and duty cycle (the time spent transmitting). There are RF exposure calculators online that can help you determine which power levels, antennas and distance to a person are harmful.

I over paid as I offloaded the entire process to a local LMR dealer. It set me back $1200 USD. I look it as a $10/mo. expense for the next 10 years. You can do it for about 3-4 times less.

I'm the one that Bioenno sells on their site. I need to look at a faster charger as the Dakato can charge at a muncher higher charger rate that Bioenno batteries
I use the Buddipole PowerMini solar charge controller and either a 10 watt or 20-watt solar panel from PowerFilm. I've shown this setup a lot of my field videos.
What is yhe reason fo not running mor then 10 watts on body? You keep saying you wouldnt do that. But whats the reason ? Really new to ham radios. Trying to understand.
Welcome to the party. My wallet is a considerably lighter after getting into radio, but it's been worth the time and investment. I hate you too for making me spend all this time making videos. ;-)
Dont you need someone with exact brand of radioreceiver at the other end to initiate simplex communication? Also mobile radio circuits are extremely sensitive to wind, vibration and clutter. You need noise cancelling headphones or something. In short a cellphone should be in a man pack with a battery charger.
It is pricey, but there are actually two US companies involved in the production of this product. The process is time consuming to produce based on what I know behind the scenes.
BIG FAN HERE: This is a CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIC nothing else. The 578 is going to get really hot inside that bag......that bag is not designed for the 578 and / or designed to dissipate the heat. There is no ventilation.. This "MAN-PACKS" as so call them are basically the same thing over and over for different radios but there not design ed for any specifically radio to cool it off. No web, cut off, or a way to ventilate the apparatus, therefore the radio will get over heat and can possible get ruined. I own 4 578's and 4 878's I know! Also I designed a "personal"pack for 2 of my radios with a better water proof case "PELICAN" model: V100 Vault Small Khaki and a battery (Amped Outdoors 15AH) Which I can charge with a solar panel plus connector to charge a Anytone 878 UV III plus battery type "C" for the Anytone 878 and connectors for the 578 otherwise it becomes completely absolute since it will last only the time of the charge on the battery. The 578 can be lowered to "M" power and easily last longer using the same battery and recharge the battery using a solar panel. I also charge my cellphones and and can plug my "CASE" to my car and charge and use the radios at the same time. I am not putting down you idea or you pack, just saying as a "amateur" pepper you have to think on everything not only for a few hours of communication. DMR will make your battery last longer since it is digital and you get more extremely more range. 73 I wish I can post some photos.
This manpack is not as well suited for manpack operation as my other rigs (i.e. Yaesu FT-818 or FT-857). However, I have always made the case that my goal is around establishing short commo windows with these manpacks. I actually have been running my manpacks (not the 578) the last three summers in the Sonoran Desert in temperatures up to 118F and have never had a problem with heat when hitting targeted communication windows. For the record, my TTP Manpack bags (no longer available) have a built-in U-shaped zipper for venting. There is a snap that allows the flap to clip to the top of the bag. I have never used it for heat dissipation. I open the flap mostly for access to the rear when I need access to the bottom/back of the radio. If your goal is to rag chew, then yes, I agree with your points. Everyone's gear is based on their needs. Thanks for the comment.
I have a business and went through the legal channels with the FCC to obtain a business license, so I am unclear why you think DHS needs to be involved? I have a CCW too. Do you think the ATF should be involved as well?
The manpack solving the "home kit" + "mobile kit" is what's appealing to me...i can't afford 2 radios but i can afford a radio and a manpack.

I'm the one that Bioenno sells on their site. I need to look at a faster charger as the Dakato can charge at a muncher higher charger rate that Bioenno batteries
How do you charge that in the field with a solar panel?
I use the Buddipole PowerMini solar charge controller and either a 10 watt or 20-watt solar panel from PowerFilm. I've shown this setup a lot of my field videos.
Ugh, the Armoloq msb 1280 is 174$. Jeez. It is not waterproof. Maybe splash proof. Could help dinging the battery. Very nice extra.
Where can I buy the original Manpack bag?
My bag is no longer available. The original bag that I used is available from High Ground Gear.
What is yhe reason fo not running mor then 10 watts on body? You keep saying you wouldnt do that. But whats the reason ? Really new to ham radios. Trying to understand.
Take a look at the RF exposure calculators online.
@@TheTechPrepper thank you I really appreciate it. Once I get my man bag and license I would like to make contact from Arkansas.
LITTLE more power :))
I hate your channel! Now because of your exceptional videos I have a whole new skill set to learn! Not to mention what it will cost me! Dammit! 😉
Welcome to the party. My wallet is a considerably lighter after getting into radio, but it's been worth the time and investment. I hate you too for making me spend all this time making videos. ;-)
I can’t see how to shoot down a MiG jet with this !
You did say Manpad right?

What's crack-a-lackin homies? 😂
Excellent intro! 👍
Some random dude greeted me with that earlier in the week, so I thought let's try it. Glad you approve.
Dont you need someone with exact brand of radioreceiver at the other end to initiate simplex communication? Also mobile radio circuits are extremely sensitive to wind, vibration and clutter. You need noise cancelling headphones or something. In short a cellphone should be in a man pack with a battery charger.
Бывает .....
Slightly upsetting how expensive the battery kydex is.
It is pricey, but there are actually two US companies involved in the production of this product. The process is time consuming to produce based on what I know behind the scenes.
When the pack costs as much as the radio. Gonna pass on those Armoloq prices.
Unfortunately, that's the cost of building these and supporting small businesses in the US.
@@TheTechPrepper You are correct. I like your TTP manpack (Little Guy) setup better than the long config. Do you have a restock in the works?
BIG FAN HERE:
This is a CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIC nothing else.
Technically, FRS radios must have a fixed (non-removable) antenna and, channels 8 - 14 are limited to 500mw, which the 578 isn't capable of.
You are correct. Regulations aside, it has the technical capability to transmit on the radio services that fall within the VHF and UHF bands.
Sad ham
WTH?
You should try to look at the camera when talking, it looks better

Why do you want to encrypt your communications? Who are your buddies in the field? Should DHS be concerned. 73 de N9XY
Encryption is fun. You don’t need another answer. The end.
I have a business and went through the legal channels with the FCC to obtain a business license, so I am unclear why you think DHS needs to be involved? I have a CCW too. Do you think the ATF should be involved as well?
Because he doesn’t want random people listening to his conversations. Duh
😂😂😂
Can HAMs be fudds too?
