Honestly, I feel the cannibalism is too focused on. Any adventure lizardfolk would not mention it as an option because their exposure to humans would teach them "these things treat that as hostile, and I will more likely die if I dont have them as allies'.
Yes the lizardfolk would be the first to sign off on the idea, but out of self preservation they wouldn't be the first to suggest it
My party know my lizardfolk is a cannibal. I generally ask their permission if it's ok to eat this species in front of them or others. My lizardfolk doesn't care about their feelings but would rather not be kicked out of a village of rich resources and stabbed. Especially when my lizardfolk can just give the village shiny gold metal for meat that they eat and find socially acceptable.

As part of a party that started at first level I can say it was super fun to teach our lizardfolk "the ways of the world", like when to loot bodies for *everything* they're worth and when to just leave them, when to "get your own food" and when to just buy meat, etc.
But yeah, it wasn't like he went around killing people and eating them, rather he was trying to learn and understand the differences between lizardfolk and other societies.
@@arandomcheese I loved to play my lizardfolk as completely impervious to greed. Like, a dwarf fighter might think twice before paying a toll to bandits occupying a bridge, but to a lizardfolk it is a way to avoid getting stabbed for a couple of metal circles. It's not like they need much, considering they have a bone spear and a hide that's thicker than most light armors

Lizardfolk are really similar to minotaurs in thier dietary pallet. In one campaign our minotaur got into a fight with a lizard folk over who got to eat the human bandit. They decideded to split the bandit in half. It was so funny to hear the DM describe how the the bandits were reacting to two animalistic monsters discussing who would get the drum sticks.
Bandits witnessing their comrade’s corpse getting divvied up like a roast chicken: “I did NOT sign up for this!”
Shouldn't minotaurs be vegan because they'r bulls? Or does the human half make them omnivores?

Imagine: A dragon that has stumbled by a lizardfolk tribe, with a nearby kobold warren. This dragon now has an army of virtually unkillable lizard people, and a very complex society of incredibly skilled artisans, inventors and builders.
This sounds like a pretty good idea for a campaign, make the dragon a chromatic one who plans on using his army to conquer the nearby villages/city with they'r new army and the players have to lead a mini army of they'r own (made up of ppl recruited from those villages) to stop them.
Also its not the Lizardfolk avoiding Deviantart. Its the Kobolds.

I once played a Lizardfolk Necromancer who had a taste for rotting flesh. Whenever he would find a corpse he would eat it to the bare bones and then animate said bones.

I’ve got a Lizardfolk Barbarian named Fingers, and he’s exceptionally fun to play.
The other players love swindling him out of the money he has no concept of, paying him in entire pigs to NOT kill and eat prisoners, and doing their best to remove him from any social scenario as to not terrify noblemen or commoners.
I got a character named Fingers too! But she's a boggle locksmith.
Jane Ross Is she also named Fingers because she likes to eat them, for they are portable and crunchy?
Got a lizardfolk barbarian named Krotra of Axoca. Basically terrifies everyone and intimidates people into giving up information by asking the warlock if he can eat them.
Also has a weakness towards kittens. 🐱🐈

@@theoneandonlymichaelmccormick nah it's because she's really good at lockpicking (just in an entirely legitimate sense - she's super lawful). Funny thing, I randomly rolled her backstory using tables from Xanathar's, which added another possible reason for the nickname, given she has a lost love who's a human female. Doesn't warrant thinking too much about...
Lizard folks aren't the only ones without emotions, the yuan-ti imitated their gimmick
The way I see it, Lizardfolk’s lack of emotions are because of pure pragmatism while Yuan-ti stems from malice.
Lets see, we have the neutral lizardfolk, the malicious Yuan-ti, so where are the good dino or shark people? So we can all lump them into one interesting society where we can have good snake people for once.

Lizardfolk have a fun time justifying going somewhere to adventure. Rather than some noble quest for revenge or to grow in power they can have ludicrously simple like needing to bring back knowledge of what is happening around the world so their tribe knows how safe it is. Or heck, if the other adventurers are warm blooded it can be as simple as having these awesome space heaters at night that will fight for and heal you during the day.
That is adorable

@@isaacgraff8288 funny enough his clan was wiped out in a bitter winter, and was saved by a passing wizard doing field research. Since his clans ways got everyone killed he's come to the conclusion they were stupid and is searching all the things. His Magnificen Mansion is more like a Beautiful Bungalow, a tiny tropical island to live in no matter how much reality sucks.
Its also fun playing a lizard wizard because its the perfect oportunity to play a character who sees new things with 0 context for them and after a few moments have better takeaways than most people. Like a lizard version of Data or Seven of Nine from Star Trek.

One time while playing a Dragonborn the party wondered into a lizard folk village and they though he was one of there own and was super impressed by his breath weapon.
I played a Lizardfolk Barbarian in ToA, my whole attitude towards the yuan ti was calling them posers, but can't blame them for wanting to achieve the scaly perfection that I was blessed with. Actually, I cornered a malison, said "Loser is lunch" and attacked him. It was a close fight, but got his hp to 1, went for a grapple (which I normally used to hold things underwater) did a scaly version of Bane's speech about how they adopted the scales, but I was born too it, molded by it, etc, then finished the fight by slamming him on my knee. The table just cracked up lol

Combine artificer with Cunning Artisan and make your gadgets out of people.
Now I'm imagining a gold dragon happening upon a group of lizard folk and teaching them how to be good to others and asking them to help anyone in need that they find in the swamp. It honestly sounds like something that can catch players of guard since instead of a group of violent reptile monsters they come across a bunch of kind lizard folk who are as wholesome as you can be.
Oh how I love these lads. Easily my favorite race. Immersing yourself into that mindset is such a fuckin blast for me. I got two characters I love playing.
One is a Sheperd Druid, currently lv11. Came from a now-destroyed tribe that went against his advice and basically threw themselves at a war that was currently igniting becuase they felt threatened by the events. After that, he started getting visions of a disaster that'd likely mean massive damage to nature on a global scale, and started travelling to prevent it - because he sees nature as his greatest ally, and very much worth protecting. Has far more STR than DEX and a slightly homebrewed Tavern Brawler to occasionally drag foes into walls of fire and such.
The other is a Bladesinger Wizard, currently lv13. Kept as an exotic pet by nobles during early childhood, then kicked out to the streets, surviving as an urchin relying on being amoral. Picked up wizardry and education by thieving from more capable people - eventually snatched very important stuff from a Bladesinger, not knowing what it was, and being hunted by the bladesingers in return since they want to keep it secret at all costs. Knows a ton about society by virtue of not having met any other lizardfolk in her lifetime and wizard-INT to learn it, all she knows about her own race comes from books she stole. Learned to move around society and not ruin first impressions by being extremely polite. End goal is to find a way to become immortal (hint: Clone spell), to find a lizard tribe she can be absurdly useful for into eternity, because in the end, she is not a fan of society :P
My party has a Tortle Bladesinger Wizard, and yes his player is a power gamer but the Tortle does actually have character to him.

I keep wanting to make a lizardfolk bard named Ding so I can use the emotionlessness of lizardfolk for comedy.
He decided to become a bard because he saw a bard fight good one time and decided being a bard is good for survival. He now carries around a triangle and dings it once before giving a very basic command.
Healing? *ding* "stop dying"
Vicious Mockery? *ding* "you suck"
Sleep? *ding* "nap time"
I really want to make Creaksqueak, a kenku bard who can’t play any instruments and only sings other bards’ songs with Minor Illusion providing instrumentation. He also only speaks in stolen song lyrics.
Together, we can challenge what it truly means to be a bard!

Love my lizardfolk druid. There's nothing like killing a foe and then using his body to make tools to kill his friends with. Plus, fingers are a delicious bite-sized snack!

There is nothing more beautiful than fulfilling a prophecy of who will kill X person by hitting them with a javelin made out of the person the prophecy specified, or ducking out of immediate consequences of agency of a killing like a curse,, by the person the javelin was made of still being alive, and thus most immediately responsible for the killing blow.
Also, keeping a running tally of such prophecies, and hoarding javelins made out of people that fit them.

Ah, damn, I have two Wednesdays already, right next to the male elf warlocks born under an eclipse, and under the six pack of innocent yet courageous halfling burglars of common birth. Ever since I discovered about the fight of Daedra vs Argonians during the Oblivion Crisis, Lizardfolk are a swamp-staple in any world I build.
The lizardfolk dragon worship thing is based in “similar is less likely to harm similar” paired with “is functionally capable of being a god” applied to dragons making them be seen as massive potential allies who should be appeased and encouraged to be positively disposed to the lizardfolk as possible. Plus, due to the whole emotions thing, dragons also seem insane to lizardfolk.

I’ve always been told that the reason lizardfolk serve dragons is because the dragon tells them, “serve me or die.” And the lizardfolk obliges because they don’t want to die

My favorite flip on Lizardfolk is to make them so darn hyper-emotional that it just freaks everyone else out and they actively avoid them such isn't hard considering their preferred environments.

I made a lizard race similar to lizardfolk with some key differences:
Skinks are a short slim race that are roughly the same height as dwarves. They are much thinner than a human will naturally be, and have blue tails when they’re young. They have high dexterity, but aren’t built to be aquatic like Lizardfolk are. They swim roughly as well as a human can, and are more suited to wooded and mountainous areas. Their scales may range from pitch black to the color of orange leaves, and have a black line down their body with a white line in the center, starting at the corner of the mouth and ending at the end of the tail. They do not have any spikes along their body, and are serpent-like. They aren’t usually very aggressive, and while their bite can hurt only slightly worse than a human, they don’t always rely on it for combat. They can use their tail to distract dumber animalistic enemies but it takes a while to grow it back and losing it affects their balance.

Wow, this is timely. The party in my game is making their way to a swamp city inhabited largely by lizard-folk. This was helpful
Imagine you go into a swamp to deal with the lizardmen problem and Kroq-Gar is just there waiting for you.
I mean, Kroq-Gar is actually notable for being one of the most chill, understanding, and socially advanced Saurus in existence, so that's a best possible outcome. Kroq-Gar understands things like diplomacy, scratching backs to get scratched, and winning brownie points with locals to kill chaos better. A random, unarmed warmblood without glowey eyes, warp stink, or viking horns could probably even give him 5 and get help going back home.
Heck, running into a Skink is probably more dangerous, since they actively like the taste of humans, Saurus don't care.
Kroxigors are actually pretty chill, too, unless you scare or confuse them. They are very easily confused, but, just move slowly, and make sure you have an open hand when you feed one.
Running into Gor-Rok is the opposite of that, unless he's going the same direction you are. Just don't bother him and wait patiently for him to waddle away. Upside, Gor-Rok probably can't catch you if you just run.
You should've used that one albino lizard girl from overlord who wears a bush to protect her skin/scales.
Mentioning of FurAffinity was one thing that took me by surprise, but Bad-Dragon's namedrop just floored me. While I was expecting some information that others the content here was very humorous!

I play a lizardfolk assassin. His name is Neemrod and is very blunt and honest. He's trying his best to understand emotion and why its a bad thing to eat your opponents after you defeat them.

I can't help but imagine that, just as a halfling might have a burning desire to be seen as a mighty warrior among giants or a particularly gifted orc might want to become admired as an intellectual marvel, there are probably lizardfolk out there whose greatest desire is to harness this strange thing others call emotion and become better at it than anyone else. I mean, all these other races... they put so much value in it and it's not like they're all dead or anything. Must be a very valuable thing, right? Just logically.
Have a lizardfolk barbarian who's trying to learn that same thing.
@@Lobsterwithinternet neat! :D my lizardfolk is a scoundrel and a bully who travels around with a group of crocos (one familiar, one beast companion, one mount, and one steel defender... hooray for multiclassing and hooray for disguise kit proficiency). For lizardfolk version of emotion I just think about psychotic mind mode. Y'know when you think you're not emotional at all, but you totally are, and you think you're the most logical living being possible, but you're actually all over the place. Usually occurs following trauma. I think of a being who's like that all the time (but also much more suited to it than humans are).

My girlfriend played a lizardfolk who kept MacGuyvering stuff together, like making (and giving to village children) toys out of dried eyeballs and sticks
I'll never forget my Lizardfolk Trickery Cleric, Tihnihuini (whom my party swore was a Druid). Last word on his whereabouts is he's busy at a portal to Baator, keeping the world from facing an invasion.
As written, the 'emotionless pragmatist' concept of lizardfolk in Volo's is interesting enough for a bit NPC or maybe a player character for a one-off adventure, but damn does the bit get old fast. Perfect example of why sometimes you need to ignore Wizards and make good and interesting characters instead.

My Lizarsfolk Barbarian Storm Herald(desert) ... Leruk the chardlizard live to Kill , Eat and Cratf weapons from Defeated enemys .. that is his goal .... My favorite hunter trapper gimmick Pc .. with magic initiate feat (druid) produce flame (ligth tail and ember) and control flames with fog cloud (smokecreen)

My party allied with a lizard folk and I think it was partially cause I could feed giant monster things without a scratch on me and the hatchlings clung to me from the moment they say me till I left😅
The best hardcore tank build I made used the lizardfolk.
Going for fighter 1/forge cleric 6/kensei monk x to get that sweet 27ac without magic items and still doing a good amount of damage with your kensei weapon and lizard bites that can be used as 1d6+str unarmed strikes while wearing heavy armor and shield.
Hm... STR based monk that knowingly ditches unarmored defense/movement, complimenting with multiclass... very interesting build!

Only the damage output per round is not that great. It's a tank, not a damage dealer sadly (damage dealers would be consistent 60dmg/round against 19ac to me).

We all died.
The character build is a fantastic tank, being able to withstand multiple firegiants at once, but you really do not deal alot of damage. And when your party wizard dimension doors away with the party sorcerer because they got hit by a boulder once... Well then you can hope that the firegiants are going to get bored with ye before you die. (Spoiler: they did not.)
LIzardfolk are one of my favorite monster races to play because they have 13+dex AC by default. So handy!
