Jim Powell speaking. I do what you are teaching. However, I add one thing. When I set my putter I bring the inside of my elbows in so they just lightly touch my sides. That really helps me to be consistent with my stroke.
HI Todd, I had the worst putting of my life two days ago (10 3-putt greens), came home and checked out putting videos on TH-cam. I'm a fan of yours (I bought your book) and saw the video where you talked about Cory Pavin and the tip he gave you about turning your left hand under the grip. I also have a balance issue (82 y/o) and tend to drift forward while putting and had been using a straight back and through stroke. I practiced a bit before today's round and 3-putted the 1st hole. I ended up with 5 1-putt greens, 2 birdies and 3 doubles. Show an 83 and my buddies couldn't get over how well I putted. Thanks for that great tip Wayne Kivi Cape Cod
From San Diego, I "WAS "convinced that straight back and through was the only way. I have a whole golf bag full of putters and was leaning pretty hard into mallets. Your video is working on changing my mind about my stroke. The weaker grip is not something I would think would help, but dang, it does! I am going to watch all your putting videos, thanks Todd!!!!
John, you made our day with your post and comments. I cover all this and much more in my book, The Bad Lie. Here is the Amazon link if you are interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
This is really helpful, Todd. What really counts is that the putter face is flat and facing directly towards the target at the moment of contact with the ball. It makes a lot of sense to work with, rather than against, the way your body works.
Thank You for this great information. I really connected with this video as I'm new to golf and have been trying to be perfectly straight back and through with my putting stroke. Very hard to be consistent that way!! The slight arc is so much more natural and my contact is more consistently in the center of the face now!! What is your opinion of Center Shafted Putters?
Center shafted putters are a solid option for many golfer. Relatively easy to use. As a new golfer have you seen this video th-cam.com/video/F_QBdBOfhYw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QcY4kl78hSsAFTru
Hi Todd, the vertical line swing(The Bad Lie) is working when I excute properly. The misses are totally on me. I able to shot in the low 80s and high 70s regularly now. Thanks for the putting lesson, I'm actually a decent putter, but your lesson reinforced my natural stroke. Take care buddy! Pat from Kapolei HI.
Great video Todd. I have done the one handed putt a lot. And it really works. I going to try the three swing drill one handed then add the other hand to get the fill of it.
One thing that you haven’t highlighted is that your shoulders are moving together with your arms and as they all move in one piece this keeps everything linked up and enables you to swing the putter smoothly and online.
Fred from Maine. I really like your videos and can't wait for spring to try your tips and the Maxvert driver I just purchased. You refer to an inside-out swing to cure a slice. Do I square the club head to my line of swing or the target line? Thanks
Fred, thanks for the purchase and kind words. Yes we want the clubface square to the target line at address while the body is slightly closed. Here is a good video to watch th-cam.com/video/4obK1N-N9qY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=a_vUHTqf6sxq5sGJ
I use this putting method and integrate it with a toe-hang (weighted) putter. Through experimentation I have determined this to be the most reliable approach.
Hi, Have you any advice for getting rid of the wips in putting. Ive had them for about 10 years and as a result i now put left handed without any issues. But I would still like to go back to right handed putting. Thank you. Eric O Connor
I’m going to try this. I was totally putting straight up and down and missing majority putts. I’ve been playing for a couple weeks now and I’m addicted. Now if I can learn to distance my putts as well.
I am just getting started with my putting with a mini golf course putting the problem I am trying to work on is getting a good swing from both my left side and right side
This concept makes perfect sense. I have tried going straight back and straight through and it becomes very inconsistent for me. Like the arc shining much better. Thanks.
An easy way to practice with the putter is to take an alignment rod, or even an iron, and hold it under both arms just above both elbows and pin it to your chest. Take your putting stance and rock the shoulders back and forth and you will see the natural arc of the putting stroke. Do that for a minute or two on a regular basis and it also teaches you what square shoulders parallel to your intended line looks like and the minor adjustments needed in your grip for the putter face to form a right angle to the alignment rod. Give it a try…it works.
Thank you! Did you see our latest video on a tip I gave myself? It added 20+ yards to my drives so I wanted to share. th-cam.com/video/wXlc5dkH5Ls/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Fvv195iZ595QhHx-
I tend to hit a lot of putts to the right off the toe. I know it is probably related to my swing arc but is there a certain style putter type that would help me push less and hit my toe of the putter less? Would a SC Del Mar or a Seemore center shafted style help or is there another style that would help me ?
Generally we like a little toe hang, however it is very much up to the individual. We do cover putting in detail in our latest book THE BAD LIE which you can find on Amazon if you enjoy learning
The consistency comes in the Tempo. Once you are More than about 6 Feet away from the Hole, *the elapsed time from the Start of the takeaway and then back to Impact should be as close as possible to the same amount of time no matter the Length of the Putt.* As Putts get Longer, the "Backswing" does Lengthen AND so the Clubhead Speed must also increase to produce the necessary Rolling Distances.
The G-track is super easy to aim and is fully adjustable. If you tend to push putts (right handed golfer) you can move the shaft to the forward position. If you tend to pull putts, you can move it to the back position. The face will have a different release pattern based on the position. Hope that helps.
Hi Todd, Another great video, thanks. I don't know what kind of putter i am. For short putts (10 feet and under), i use some sort of pop stroke putting so pretty straight. And for longer putts, i play them with a natural arc. So, what kind of putter do i need : - Face balanced and straight, - Toe balanced for light arc, strong arc ?
I use a long putter and I side saddle putt. I very seldom ever three putt. It's simple and it saves my back, especially when I practice a lot. What are your thoughts about side saddle?
There are Two Reasons for a Right (Push) Miss. 1) Actually being Aimed more to the Right than you believe you are. This could be Your own Aiming, or having the Face Aimed more to the Right than you are "seeing". 2) Using a Putter that has Too MUCH Toe Flow. Or a Combination of these two. IF You are Aimed Correctly a Putter with less Toe Flow, even possibly a Face Balanced Putter will bring the Ball towards the Left (Pull)
Hi Elizabeth, you can get a free copy of the Lost Chapter here: vlsgolf.com/pages/youtube Thanks for purchasing the book, be sure to leave us a review on Amazon!
Good question. You will want a more vertical shaft angle at address and more tilt forward at the hip joint. I have a full chapter on putting in my latest book The Bad Lie if you are interested www.badliegolfbook.com/
Where should the ball be in your putting stance while putting? If in the middle of your stance what do you think is a good way to be sure it is always in the same spot. IE:Zipper on your pants, shirt buttons. I have a tendency to tip my head because I putt with an open stance how can I correct the head tip? Thank you
We can help there too! Here's a great video we did on reading putts: th-cam.com/video/wh_-0tVAMNM/w-d-xo.html The entire process should only take 15-20 seconds, and should be done while others are putting as long as you aren't impeding their putt. Hope the info helps!
I putted best when I concentrated on keeping my body and head extremely still. I would resist temptation to look up quickly. Keeping head and body still,,,listening for ball to go in.. this is number one fundamental.! ⛳
Can you elaborate on the importance of ball position. Logic tells me to far forward likely promotes pull, where too far back promotes push. Not only logic, but my personal nemesis. Or is it just me
Todd, thanks for another instruction, however I do not totally agree, from what I see your hand position, right hand (wrist) below the left hand (wrist) lead to a lowering of right shoulder. I have found, that my grip, where palms are face to face, wrists even, index finger pointing down along the shaft and other fingers interlocking, creates a triangle with shoulders level. This grip lets me swing the putter in straight line, simply by rocking the shoulders. My eyes are over the ball and arms are virtually straight.
I don't have the live view thing, but a "pop" style putting (very short back & very short thru) stroke, which I find extremely useful on very fast greens, seems pretty much a straight line stoke to me. This is not to say an arcing stroke is not valid, but rather that there is more than 1 way to skin a cat.
I like your video and I’d like to putt better so I will try this. But… when you demonstrated the straight back and thru stroke, it was all arms. And when you demonstrated the arc you rotated your torso So not an apples to apples comparison.
I do disagree somewhat. For putts 6' and under you do not need to swing on an arc. If you have a face-balanced putter (which supports the straight back motion), the backswing distance is only a foot or less and does not require manipulation of any kind. I pick my intended line, draw the putter straight back a foot or less, pause while looking ahead of the ball at the intended line (from Dave Stockton) and then swing straight down that line. Pausing promotes accelerating thru the putt. I seldom miss using this method. I also putt cross-handed which reduces wrist motion. On longer lag-type putts, then arc putting and some wrist action is useful. My two cents from one of your experienced golfers. Chicago suburbs.
Combination of the 3. Great question. Most golfers think it is just shoulders, not correct. I cover this in great detail in my book The Bad Lie if you would like to continue learning. You can find it on Amazon here www.badliegolfbook.com/
You can putt straight back and straight through (without manipulation as the video demonstrates) IF your only movement is shoulder rocking in a vertical plane. I am not saying that this is a better way to putt, but the video is simply demonstrating how NOT to putt straight back/straight through.
If you let your lead knee bend as u come back you can still stay on the straight line and my arm stay the same as my putter dose just like your pizza drill and I never not have a flat putt. As if I don't I push with changing the line is that still wrong
Not gonna lie. I ordered Dominos half way through this video. 2 medium pizzas later, I'm so full I can hardly stand over the ball and putt. But I feel full none the less.
The shoulders are part of the movement, however not the main driver of the movement IMO. It is a combination of arms, shoulders and hands for the perfect mix. Make sense?
You don’t do a proper test! When you attempt straight back and through, you use all hands and arms, but we all know that we form a triangle with hands, arms and shoulders. When you hold steady hands and arms, rocking shoulders, the path of the club is much straighter.
Makes sense… some days I can’t miss other days I can’t make a 4 footer… this tip is why… when I’m on I don’t think about straight back and thru. @@johncacciatore4587 we have a couple great putting drills in our book which you can find here www.badliegolfbook.com/
I agree you can't put straight back and through. I swing in to in.😀 I put my putter in between 2 tees and putt when i practice.
The length of 1foot back and one foot forward for a 10 foot length is minimal hence for upto -10 handicap Don't worry
So the pendulum story has a incorrect? When putting
We believe so, yes. Here is a good way to learn more th-cam.com/video/OTTrgZ35sj8/w-d-xo.html
Amen!
Thanks...time to make some putts!
You can putt straight back and straight through (without manipulation as the video demonstrates) IF your only movement is shoulder rocking in a vertical plane. I am not saying that this is a better way to putt, but the video is simply demonstrating how NOT to putt straight back/straight through.
In your putting drill,do you keep your arms close today your body?
In general yes...
If you let your lead knee bend as u come back you can still stay on the straight line and my arm stay the same as my putter dose just like your pizza drill and I never not have a flat putt. As if I don't I push with changing the line is that still wrong
One thing you didn’t cover was ball placement, it must be tangent to the arc or this doesn’t work.
We cover more set up in this video th-cam.com/video/hhZxm-caEeY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qINteMHI0LmHiu7J
Todd definitely proves NOT TO GO STAIGHT BACK & THROUGH.
A more natural easy to do arc is the CORRECT WAY.
Thank you Todd.
Thanks Alan, the Pizza Slice video we did proved that. 👊
Hey Todd
Why can't I get a response to getting a refund for a maxvert that I purchased
Drop us a note at info@vlsgolf.com and we will be sure to get you taken care of.
Not gonna lie. I ordered Dominos half way through this video. 2 medium pizzas later, I'm so full I can hardly stand over the ball and putt. But I feel full none the less.
Haha, hey as long as the info helps you roll the rock! Hope the pizza was good too!
When do you ever take the putter back a foot. Mostly all green speed you would not do that.
Happy face stroke happy golfer
👏👏👏👍
You don’t use your shoulders?
The shoulders are part of the movement, however not the main driver of the movement IMO. It is a combination of arms, shoulders and hands for the perfect mix. Make sense?
You don’t do a proper test! When you attempt straight back and through, you use all hands and arms, but we all know that we form a triangle with hands, arms and shoulders. When you hold steady hands and arms, rocking shoulders, the path of the club is much straighter.
Fair points, note the examples are for visual and demonstration purposes only.
Talk more about how to make correct stroke. 90% of video was on what not to do. Not much on actual “Good” stroke!
Jeff, thanks for the feedback. We do have a full chapter in our book on the VLS putting system. See here www.badliegolfbook.com/
