I first heard this song when I found a 78-RPM record from the Soviet Melodiya label that my grandfather had bought in New York during World War II to support the Soviet war effort and I found it inspiring even as a child, though at first I understood little. This was written during the Russian civil war after the Revolution, while the then Ukrainian leader, Petloura, was launching pogroms against Jews like my grandparents (while the US government under Woodrow Wilson actually sent an expeditionary force to back up the Czarist White armies, who were carrying out their own massive pogroms). It's especially poignant now, when Washington is trying to pick servile leaders in the now independent states and bleed Russia dry, no matter how many Ukrainian and Russian lives it takes.
