Australia is a vast difference of landscapes and weather conditions. You started in the summer in the NT which is the most extreme heat and humidity in that time. Was quite interesting to listen to your view of your travels through Aus, being a keen bike-packer myself, glad you’ve experienced some varied Aussie experiences, some good but some challenging as we have lots of the insects and animals are very unique to our lands. Got to take the good with the bad as you know. Enjoy the good and try to forget about the flies and bites. 🤣

I had the same experience with sand flies in Sri Lanka, and the midges and no-see-ums of the southern US are similar. There does exist netting/screens with extra small holes, but you usually have to order it. Long clothing tied around the wrists and ankles, or bedsheets over the tent, work pretty well, but are hot. Deet or eucalyptus oil are probably the best chemical repellents. A strong fan or wind also works. Hope this helps someone

Those sandflies tend to come out more during a full moon. You must have also been near the coast. Aeroguard used to work but maybe they are used to it

Ahhh, mate! That looks nasty...they are terrible. I am sure you have read and learnt more about them, some sprays work against them but its best to do prior research and try to avoid the areas which are known for sandflies. Some people are more sensitive to them than others. I have been bitten multiple times and each time it takes atleast about 3 weeks to heal. Enjoy your travels!

Sad to hear you got on the bug menu again. I hope things improve. I do love Australia but it has some interesting wildlife and that's before you get to larger predators! It must be fun for Aussies, as most of them and Kiwi's are usually the ones camping and travelling. ( as they say "last one out turn the lights off". Stay safe. Love handles? but you're skinny. Maybe in 30 years.

What are those insects called? What is their real technical name? Sand flies is a broad large group of different kinds of flies.
