The actor who played "the cabbie" was a very respected character actor named Ernest Borgnine who starred in like 100 films like The Vikings, The Wild Bunch, Ice Station Zebra, The Dirty Dozen, Flight of the Phoenix, Emperor of the North, From here to Eternity, Marty, The Poseidon Adventure, Super Snooper, Willard, Jesus of Nazareth, Bad day at black rock, The Black hole, When Time ran out, etc.
I wonder if there's a backstory for each of the major characters here, because there's _so_ much we don't know. I would also like to know how the USA went from being the land of the free to a pseudo-fascist nightmare as well as how New York went down the toilet to the point where it became the country's only prison.
@Robert Douglass I remember some expanded media in the early 2000's about Snake Plizkin in a comic series and there was a sequel Escape from LA in 97, but that's all I know. Maybe there's more out there because you're right. There's so much back story there when we come into this movie that would be fascinating to expand on.
Kurt Russell is my all-time favorite actor. His characters are timeless, and he's just "the man" plain and simple. We were all hoping that Kurt's son, Wyatt Russell would be the new Snake Plissken for the rumored reboot, but I hear that it is dead in the water at this time; and YES you are correct, Snake Plissken was the inspiration for Solid Snake/Big Boss. As a matter of fact, in MGS2:SOL Snake uses the code name Iroquois (Snake) Plissken.
John and Kurt are definitely buds. Their audio commentaries for their movies are mostly them shooting the 💩 and occasionally going 'Hey, that was a fun scene'.
Escape From New York, The Thing and Big Trouble In Little China are still among my all time favourite movies. This was made in the days of practical effects, miniature models and matte paintings and it is awesome. The voice over at the start of the movie was provided by another long time John Carpenter collaborator, Jamie Lee Curtis.
Jamie Lee Curtis, one of the original Scream Queens and initially famous for her role of Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise, originally created by John Carpenter.
So many great character actors populate John Carpenter films. Oscar winner Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Lee Van Cleef, Adrienne Barbeau, Donald Pleasance, and Isaac Hayes just bolster the most iconic character Kurt Russell ever created. Glad you enjoyed the turn-your-brain-off fun of the 80s.
This is a foundational movie for Gen X dystopian scifi fans. Saw it on cable when I was 11 or 12 and it informed my expectations for the genre. Just a wildly imaginative scenario.
We watched this the night the VCR tape came out back in the early 80s. Spent the entire weekend just playing it over and over. Just terrific film that inspires me to this day. (And speaking of inspiration, yes, Snake was a direct inspiration for _Metal Solid Gear_ - so much so that the film company was going to sue for infringement. But Carpenter said, "Don't. I know him and Kojima is a nice guy." Talk about class act XD )
Great reaction as always. This is one of my favorite John Carpenter movies. He and Kurt did a couple more movies together. The sequel, Escape From L.A., and their first film together, Elvis, a tv movie where Kurt played Elvis Presley. The actress that played Maggie, Adrienne Barbeau, was married to John Carpenter when they did this movie and The Fog. (Definitely watch that one.) Can't wait to see what you watch next! Yay!
Fun Fact: Jamie Lee Curtis does the narration at the beginning of this film. She, like Kurt Russell, has worked with John Carpenter quite a few times. Including Escape she was in Halloween and The Fog respectively and has worked with Carpenter on the more recent Halloween films where he serves as a producer.
7:05 Yes, in fact, the character, Snake, from Metal Gear Solid was highly inspired by Kurt Russel's Snake from Escape from New York. I'm glad you've noticed the similarities!
John Carpenter's first film with Kurt Russell was 1979's made-for-tv movie Elvis where he met his 1st wife 11:25 Season Hubley. Wyatt Russell is his son from Goldie Hawn.

You were on the money about Harry Dean Stanton. Also in Cool Hand Luke, Pretty in Pink, Kelly's Heroes, and The Green Mile to name a few. There isn't a prequel to this movie, but there is a deleted scene that shows how he got caught. And it's very good. It's about 10 mins. long It's called snakes crime.
I'm so happy you have finally watched this movie. I was 3 when this came out but I have memories of watching from when I was at least 6-7. My parents didn't really filter what we watched back then. It's still one of my favorite movies. John Carpenter's score is excellent, Kurt Russell is his usual badass self, Adrienne Barbeau is sexy as hell, and Isaac Hayes is one bad mother.... I have the special edition DVD with commentary from Russell and Carpenter. It's cool to hear them reflect on the movie as you watch it. It's about as cool as watching you react to it. Today, you're A no.1.
27:05 there is actually a rough cut of a sequence that was edited from the original film in which Snake gets captured for his part in robbing the Federal reserve Bank. It's somewhere on TH-cam that you can find.
"Escape From New York" stands apart. Classic cast for classic flick. Donald Pleasance, Lee Van Cleef, Ernist Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Kurt Russell, and Isaac Hayes, with voice over by Jamie Lee Curtis. I saw this in the theater back in 1981 when I was thirteen. I've been a fan ever since. It was a summertime action flick starring the kid from those goofy Disney movies. Dexter Riley, whiz kid spin off of a sequel to Flubber. Kurt Russell was also great in the 1980 comedy satire "Used Cars".
Great reaction, Laurenn, I really enjoyed watching your reaction to this. Yes, the Metal Gear Solid character was based on him, there is another film with 'Snake' in it, 'Escape from L.A.' which is well worth a watch either as a reaction or on your own time.
Kurt Russell was an actor that often starred as action hero but was under rated; but I think that he was a natural in this kind of film. Another Kurt Russell really good action film is the one called Soldier which is a science fiction movie.
Hi.Yet another excellent reaction to another of my favourite films and one of my favourite characters-Snake Plissken-he doesn't give a bleep about your war...or your president!!!!🐍
Hi kiddo. Thanks for being here and sharing this. ✌ Edit: yes, solid snake was definitely inspired by snake plisskin. Hideo kojima is a huge fan of the movie.
The guy who did the matte paintings and shot the model of New York footage, as well as the "computer screen" New York glider footage would go on to be a big name director as well. James Cameron.
I was a month shy of turning 14 when this came out and it made me a instant Carpenter/Russell fan for life. The sequel is more of a remake than a sequel and it’s not as good but still fun.
Seen an interview with Kurt Russell about Escape From L.A. He said after filming the first scene, he felt like he had finished filming Escape From New York, had a long weekend, and started filming Escape From L.A. That's how comfortable he was working with John Carpenter.
One of my favorite movies! It's a real oddball, even for a John Carpenter film. Very minimalist. And yes, much of it is EXPLORATION! Like a video game!
7:13 it's true, Hideo Kojima was inspired by John Carpenter's Escape From New York, and the Snake Plissken character to create the Metal Gear series since 1987. Even in the game Metal Gear Solid , references in this film are depicted in the game from 1998, especially him being injected with a bio-weapon without his consent and under false pretenses.
Thanks for yet another great reaction. Now that you've watched this one I'd say the sequel "Escape from L.A." (1996) is worth a watch too. Either way keep it up, you're doing a great job. 👍
First Metal Gear game was from 1987.. Metal Gear Solid was the 3rd game...and yeah. Solid Snake was a lift from here. Kojima is a movie geek. Also, on the original NES box art for Metal Gear 1, Solid Snake, sans eyepatch.... is just Michael Behin as Reese from Terminator in his Future War gear.
Great reaction as always! The sequel to this, Escape from LA is a fun watch. Also you should check out They Live by John Carpenter. I think you would enjoy it if you haven’t already.
yay you guessed that snake in metal gear is based on this snake🥰 metal gear solid is my favorite game. in metal gear solid 2 snake even pretends his name is iriqois plisken. also side note solid snakes colonel is based on rambos colonel because metal gears creator hideo kojima loves movies.
The birth of Metal Gear Solid is base on Escape From New York (1981) I think Hideo Kojima tried to call John Carpenter back in the early 90s about making a game of that movie but his Manager refuse to talk to the young Kojima, so with Kojima’s leadership and Konami developers decided to make Metal Gear Solid without John Carpenter name attach.
Hi Laurenn! I highly recommend some of Carpenter's earlier movies: "Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)" & "Someone's Watching Me! (1978)" Both are very interesting & dark. Also, as someone already mentioned "The Fog (1980)" is a very good Carpenter movie too.
Assault on Precinct 13 doesn't get enough attention and needs some (any?!) reactions to it. Like Escape from New York it handles issues of societal decay/collapse with a relatively light touch whilst being incredibly entertaining, and occasionally very funny.
@@chrisjackson5210 It's a harsh remake of the Howard Hawks film, "Rio Bravo", starring John Wayne and Dean Martin (should have been Oscar nominated for his performance).

I've seen John Ford's The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance etc. which are good films but I just can't stand Wayne - what's the appeal?
You're correct, Lauren, Solid Snake is based on Snake Plissken. There's a sequel, Escape from L.A, which also starred Kurt Russell & directed by John Carpenter, but it's basically the same movie as the 1st movie & it has some pretty bad early 90's cgi effects.
@@Madbandit77 LOL That could work. In MY head "The Warriors" and "48 Hours" are connected. because David Patrick Kelly plays a character named Luther in both films. :)

(1996) I wasn't sure but they did a great job and although being a wee bit lighter in tone, it was arguably better that the original!
If no one has mentioned it the president was played by Donald Pleasant the doctor in Halloween.
Great reaction loved it.
Cabby is played by Ernest Borgnine and the original voice of Mermaid Man
27:05 there is actually a rough cut of a sequence that was edited from the original film in which Snake gets captured for his part in robbing the Federal reserve Bank.
Used cars highly underrated and overlooked movie
Yes, Kojima had said he based Solid Snake off Snake Pliskin.
(They Live) should be your next John Carpenter 80s movie.
"I have come here to chew bubble gum and to kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble bum".
Hi kiddo. Thanks for being here and sharing this. ✌
Edit: yes, solid snake was definitely inspired by snake plisskin. Hideo kojima is a huge fan of the movie.
The guy who did the matte paintings and shot the model of New York footage, as well as the "computer screen" New York glider footage would go on to be a big name director as well. James Cameron.
There's only one shot from New York City at the very beginning with the Statue of Liberty. Everything else was filmed in east St Louis.
No prequel unfortunately, but a sequel did come out in 1996. Escape from LA.
I was a month shy of turning 14 when this came out and it made me a instant Carpenter/Russell fan for life. The sequel is more of a remake than a sequel and it’s not as good but still fun.
John Carpenter was on absolute FIRE from the late 70's and into the 80's...kinda lost some steam in the 90's but can't win 'em all
Seen an interview with Kurt Russell about Escape From L.A.
In metal gear solid two, he tells Raiden to call him "Plisken".
Ahh Christine. Also directed by Carpenter!
As always love your reactions Lauren!
The fact that you know enough about the name Snake to fade in an image of Big Boss, and then to state that she played it long ago just made my night!
New York is not far off currently from the way it's depicted here!
Great reaction as always! The sequel to this, Escape from LA is a fun watch. Also you should check out They Live by John Carpenter. I think you would enjoy it if you haven’t already.
I keep reading that John Carpenter might be making another " The Thing "
yay you guessed that snake in metal gear is based on this snake🥰 metal gear solid is my favorite game. in metal gear solid 2 snake even pretends his name is iriqois plisken. also side note solid snakes colonel is based on rambos colonel because metal gears creator hideo kojima loves movies.
25:54 The way Snake takes that last drag on the cigarette and tosses it is too fucking cool!
Adrienne Barbeau is in another classic sci fi movie called Swamp Thing.
Great reaction, you’re awesome 😎
Love to see you watch THE WARRIORS.
Great video, keep it up 👍
Brain was in Christine and Maggie was in The Fog.
John Carpenter liked to stick with certain actors and actresses just like Tim Burton.
Hell, he married Maggie...
@@21stcenturyhiphop really?
I did not know that.
She was pretty small in this but she was good as the DJ in The Fog.
Thank you for more movie trivia 😁
@@waynekent7068 Yeah he was married to Adrienne Barbeau for awhile.
Cabbie was lovable. His death def adds to the emotional weight of the movie.
@@Madbandit77 Yeah, I'm afraid I really struggle with watching either of those performers in anything and find them both pretty insufferable. I must make myself sit down and try watching something with either of them in as I guess there's something I'm missing...
p.s. I've seen John Ford's The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance etc. which are good films but I just can't stand Wayne - what's the appeal?
There is a cut scene taken out of the beginning of the movie on how Snake was captured prior to the start of the movie.
I love both escape from movies. Kurt is just awesome as Snake.
There is not a prequel, however, there IS a 10 minute deleted scene of him pulling off a robbery that takes place before this film.
In my head, "The Warriors" from Walter Hill is the prequel to EFNY.
@@Madbandit77 LOL That could work. In MY head "The Warriors" and "48 Hours" are connected. because David Patrick Kelly plays a character named Luther in both films. :)
This soundtrack 👍
Time for Escape From LA!
It's hard to think that 20 years from this movie that those buildings would be gone and New York would be a completely different city.
If you haven't seen the Clint Eastwood (Man with No Name) Sergio Leone trilogy, Kurt Russell is doing an imitation of that Clint Eastwood character in this movie.
This movie is a John Carpenter/Kurt Russell classic that has stood the test of time love your reaction to this.
Hello lovely Lauren!! Been a few months (since you reacted to Saving Private Ryan) since I watched you react. Only coz you've been reacting to stuff I don't dig.
However, this is great!!!
Lonely old Gramps and I get such a warm feeling watching with you ❤❤❤
Another Carpenter/Russel classic
It's about time! LOL
Fun fact, John Carpenter and Kurt Russell have stated they would love to bring Snake Plissken back. Unfortunately Escape From LA didn't do so well and Carpenter was burned out from shooting Ghosts of Mars. Because of health reasons, that is why Carpenter retired retired from filmmaking to focus more on his music.
Woah. A blast from the past! I loved this movie and must've watched it dozens of times. When they released the sequel "Escape From L.A." (1996) I wasn't sure but they did a great job and although being a wee bit lighter in tone, it was arguably better that the original!
Cool reaction again LL, you have great taste in movies, I'm hoping you get to the sequel some time soon. See you next time 😎😍
@14:20... That's Harry Dean Stanton, you're right he's in both movies you mentioned and many more... including cult classic "Repo Man" that I'm sure you would completely love btw.
Your reaction to 'The Thing' is one of my favorite movie reactions on TH-cam.
I love 'The Thing'
Saw at the theater, one of my favorites! Thanks!
