- Canadian singer, songwriter, dancer, model, and actress Denise Katrina Matthews, professionally known as Vanity was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario on January 4, 1959. She was always interested in pursuing a career in singing and acting however, she was constantly discouraged to do so by those around her. That is until Prince came along. He asked her to be the lead singer of a girl group he was putting together named Vanity 6.

I met her in Dallas on her promotional tour many years ago. I was working with a photographer who was photographing her.. I was up close and personal.. I have to say, she was very nice and truly one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen..still to this day. Her skin was flawless. Her smile was beaming.. her figure was amazing..she really was a Star.. I can totally see why.

I bet you never heard that Prince broke up with her because she wouldn't leave drugs alone. I also bet you didn't hear that Apollonia asked Prince if he used drugs and his answer shocked her, he said, "I don't take anything that causes me not to be in control of my body." She took the job to be Apollonia of Apollonia 6. They all were young and mistakes were made. Her father is a loser for abusing her.
Such a beautiful breathtaking woman Denise Matthews AKA vanity I never turn down an opportunity to see her on TV or the movie screen I once reached out to Denise after she wrote a book blame it on vanity I sent her a email and to my surprise she responded back to me man I nearly fainted man this woman was truly special her heart was really in the right place I expressed to her that I didn't necessarily agree with her pushing the vanity out of her life because so many people out there really love vanity and didn't blame her for the way Hollywood was and that it would have taken a lot more of the other celebrities to help change Hollywood for the better I told her I loved and you respect Denise Matthews but I would never stop loving vanity or her memory I am 56 years old I wish I can go back and relive that time all over again just to be able to see vanity she was so happy with the email she told me to give my life and praise God Almighty after that a few weeks later I learned that she had passed away I was so sad and disappointed her spirit was truly real and it was genuine all I can do now is say thank God for vanity I will never forget about her

I'm glad Denise is one of the rare few willing to accept agency for own self-destructive behavior and not create this weird paradox where her downfall was the fault of every man around her but her successes are her own despite engaging in the exact same behavior. This is the trait of a highly self-actualized person. What bothers me is her polarity shifts. People going between two extremes tend not to be very stable. Going from raging drug addict to Jesus freak or vice versa means they only traded one addiction for another. She reminds me alot of my ex. Extremely beautiful but man did she have a dark past that made her impossible to live with. The damage her family and associates did to her at a young age she wore on her sleeve. She never really had peace of mind. RIP
In the end, she gave her life to Christ and that' s all that matters. RIP Ms. Matthews.

Actually, her religious beliefs were a continuation of her suffering from mental health issues. She was sexually and physically abused as a child, abused drugs, had volatile relationships with men, married an eventual murderer 1 month after she met them, believed that she saw and spoke to Jesus, claimed that she was possessed by demons, and claimed that she had psychic powers. She was set up to be a very unhappy person because of how she was abused as a child. And sadly, she spent her whole short life chasing after happiness and peace but never found it.
I was a recipient of her number. She was the sweetest and I truly miss talking to her. THAT WAS A PRAYING WOMAN!!! Thank you for being respectful.

I know she walked away and died to her old self and didn’t want any parts of “Vanity” She deserved that money she earned. God uses our past mistakes and lives as a testimony to further the kingdom. I can understand that sentiment, but that’s not how a true Christ-led life works. When you surrender to Him, you surrender all and He wipes your slate clean. When she decided to dedicate her life to Christ’s mission, she did so with the understanding that He would provide her with the means necessary to live and further His ministry. You cannot use the tainted fruit of a bad tree for good. 💙

I am not religious but through my vast experiences as a grown adult (I'm age 36 will be 37 this year 2021).
I can see why Denise Matthews didn't want to have Vanity attached to her anymore. Because as the years went on, that specific energy of her past would be on her conscious. She decided to let her past self be where it was...in the past.

In the 80’s Denise was our girl. We had posters of her with Vanity 6 on our wall. She was absolutely stunning. I was hoping she would get the help she she needed for her kidney disease, but it was too late. RIP Queen❤️❤️❤️
She was a patient at the dialysis clinic I worked at years ago. It was a pleasure meeting her and getting to know her. Her whole conversation was always about Jesus Christ and being saved. RIP Denise 🙏

I remember working at Kinko's Copy in Fremont back in 1997, and she came in to get some prints made. I didn't recognize her at first, but then we started talking about Jesus and how she was a born again Christian. She introduced herself as Denise, and then the more I looked at her I blurted out "Action Jackson!". She laughed and said yes that was her. I was in shock because I was in love with her growing up. I really liked her in The Last Dragon. Rest in Peace Denise, I will always remember our exchange.
Prince was not the first person to give her an opportunity in the music industry. It was Rick James he had planned to make her the lead singer of the Mary Jane girls, Prince one up Rick by convincing Denise to be a part of his girl group that he was creating. This information came directly from Brenda Bennett a member of vanity 6... This is what she told Apollonia kotero on her podcast.

its a shame the way Vanity and Nikki both treated eachother :( they both deserved the best and then they met while at the darkest times of their lives.
I thought the way Nikki portrayed her in his book was very disrespectful. It seemed very one sided. He downplayed her talent and at one point said "she claimed to be a backup singer or something for Prince". It's like dude she fronted Vanity 6! Was signed to Motown and had a ton of acting roles. @@blahblah606 alot of the times when dealing with an addict, ur not getting the real person, u get the drug fueled, selfish, cold version of the person. He was on mind altering drugs at the time so many things he may have said or done, he wouldn't have done sober. It's not an excuse because it's wrong to treat anyone unkind but being that I have dealt with drugs first hand, u can make ppl hate u cause ultimately, u hate urself at that time.

I met Denise at a visiting church I attended once. I was a HUGE fan of the movie, “ The last dragon”, and at the time thought she was one of the most beautiful woman in the world. When I was introduced to her, I was starstruck. I remember her being so kind. She looked at me smiling, and opened up her arms to signal a hug. You could feel the genuine love and kindness that exuded from her. She was even more beautiful in person, than any movie I would ever see her in. Her spirit was absolutely radiant and that matches with her physical beauty, was something I will never forget. It broke my heart to hear when she passed 💗

She stayed stunningly beautiful till the day she passed. She lived a life of pretty privilege that pretty much killed her. She was taught at a young age that her beauty and sexuality was her currency. As a woman I'm sorry she had to go through that. I'm happy she got reborn and died happy. I loved her when I was young, she was everything. I loved and respected her more by the time she passed. I actually emailed her earlier that year before she passed.
So I guess being "pretty" is not always a privileged existence now is it?

Pretty inside, pretty outside. She seemed like a nice person. People used the fact that she was pretty and loyal against her out of jealousy. Maybe Prince was fearful that she would and could get more ‘d’ than him. That’s not privilege.
