  • King Curtis' signature song...fittingly, this was also played by an all-star band at his 1971 funeral. The young Reverend Jesse Jackson led the church service with mourners such as Stevie Wonder, Duane Allman and Aretha Franklin in attendance.

Among Duane Allman's many accomplishments in his short life was turning on a gerneration of kids to the genius of King Kurtis. Cheers

2024 I’m still here rocking with Mr King Curtis . I just wish there was a longer version. And when I leave here, I’ll roll on over to the queen of soul Aretha Franklin and listen to her version. Rock on King.

Hail to the King..!!! Yes, this is the man, that I grew up listening to. I'm a child born in the late 60's, and this song was one of the songs I had to listen to every weekend...ALL weekend. I probably knew about "King Curtis" before I knew my own name. Now that I am older and wiser...this song, I now listen respectfully and enjoyingly. Truly, he was a talented and gifted man. Although he lost his life tragically, may he rest in peace.

Truman Thomas, on organ , Bernard Purdie on drums, and yes, CL Dupree on guitar and Jerry Jemott on bass. The Kingpins were simply awesome and King Curtis' untimely death was an obscenity.

Nice ID work, John. I could se that it was "Pretty" Purdie and Cornell, of course, but I didn't really recognize the great Jerry Jemmott on the bass guitar, although he looked familiar from other vids (never saw any of these awesome dudes live). Texas soul, baby!
And Truman Thomas is a guy I had totally overlooked.

Just stupendous! There has never been another sax player to match King Curtis, especially when he plays soprano sax in Soul Serenade. I also had the original album back in the sixties. Loved it then and still love it now in 2021. The progression starts so easy and just builds and builds to a beautiful climax. RIP King!

Love it!!! Many thanks for share it! #ClassicMonday #Soul

I have been negligent in failing to mention that, in this mid-'60 piece, King Curtis performs an introductory feat of Circular Breathing while simultaneously trilling. His act of Circular Breathing is reminiscent of Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the multi-instrumentalist who was, in the 50s/60s, famous for holding notes for as long as he wished. Curtis repeats his Circular Breathing-feat to end the tune. How mellow is his soprano saxello sound-voice!

Thank God, for TH-cam clips. After watching this clip a dozen times I never paid attention to the instrument King Curtis was actually playing because in my mind's eye I went back into the late 60s early '70s when musicians were playing this song at jazz clubs on alto and tenor saxes. This was always an all time favorite on AM soul stations (Right side of the dial) across the nation back then. What is this instrument the King is playing?
