  • How does someone come back as the defending champion of an event, yet still be considered an underdog in their match the following year? They play "The Magician", that's how.
Larry Nevel was the defending Derby City One Pocket Champion in the match from the final eight of the 2004 Derby City Classic One Pocket Division at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville, KY.
His opponent, Efren Reyes, is widely considered as the Greatest Of All Time, and one pocket was one of his better games.
This was a race to three, with alternating break.

One of the greatest US players but never really travelled outside the midwest, kind of like Justin Bergman. He could freeze the cue ball to the top rail and shoot a ball hanging in a pocket at the bottom end, and draw the full table length and make a ball in the top corner. Then he would move the cue ball one chalk width from the rail and do it jacked up one handed.

Always good to see those older Efren matches. Larry was a great player and what a powerful break in 9 ball and short rack bank pool RIP Larry Nevel. What a great guy.
    Thanks Pat and Accu-Stats

Danny is the most argumentative know it all ever. Even when he's completely wrong he just says well he had options instead of admitting he was completely wrong after saying he was certain

"You can bet your sweet bippy" was a line used on the Rowan and Martin show. "Bippy" means ass or butt.

Yeah, the little dink contest. You don't play Balk Line with a master of the game. I totally agree with your 9/10 assessment. And the one of ten part would most likely be an execution error, not a knowledge error. I still maintain that this one of Efren's supreme strengths, being SO very good at so very many table, stick, and ball games, one of the most beneficial, especially in strategic wars being three cushion. When you can not only hit balls on one or two rail kicks at very high percentage, but hit them where you want to on the ball, and knowing the resultant paths so well, that is a MASSIVE advantage. Much of the 'magician' came from that, IMO. I am certainly no expert, but that is what I saw. I think I saw him pick up a jump cue maybe twice in all the matches I've watched him play.
"I don't see any advantage here" when the guy is setting up and down on the shot, and then immediately after the shot is completed, "Wow, that is a great shot". Yeah, I hate that. :-) And then Danny reiterates, "Good shot". One of those 'can we go back and edit that first comment out' moments. And what's worse is that there is no way to have that NOT happen every once in a while.
If Nevel doesn't play bank pool, he should. That was pretty impressive, two of those back to back. Having that backboard ball down there helps, and actually here, helped, but still. Three long banks in a row (attempts/completions, with another shot in between) is just nuts.
Man, Efren can turn a very good break around in one or two shots.
"He's playing well, he deserves a bit of a roll". Like that matters. I have seen no correlation there, in my experience.

48:07 won't make the career Highlight Reel for Efren, but this was a fantastic shot in a sticky situation.
