I am old enough to remember using those magnesium flash bulb, you had to wait after the flash before removing the bulb because they were so hot, it melted the plastic of the bulb. Also the light flash was so strong, as a subject if you were at close range, you would see white spot for a few seconds and felt disoriented, especially when I was still a young kid. TTL metering sure help reduced that feeling today

Oh wow that's insane but to be honest when I saw videos of people shooting with old flash lamps or flash powder even just watching them through a screen impressed me due to the amount of light so imagining it in real life must be quite a scene. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Nelson!

Another great video! I love how much research is done when you test new techniques! Flash photography is a scary thing but the look it produces is completely unique. I'll have to pick myself up a small flash and try to experiment with it!

I am enjoying the Lux Senior. Here are some of my modifications: I spray-painted the reflector white to increase softness & decrease edge light falloff. Next, I made a sleeve out of 1/4 CTO gel to slip over the flashtube resulting in warmer color rendition. ( the sleeve must be removed before closing the flash). I piggy-back 2 hot shoe mounts and connect them w. a 3ft, 3.5 mm cable for easy off-camera light positioning. (The CTO sleeve lives on the connecting cable when not in use). I hope these 'mods' are useful.

Just watched your "Why shoot film?" from 03-202 and almost everything you said about why you shoot film is exactly why I shoot digital. Fascinating, really, since it is all about the feeling of wonder and the learning and the fun. And the resulting images that stir us and those who enjoy our photography.
    Cool.
    Thank you.

I had a Kodak Instamatic 233 that used flashcubes back then and various Nikon & Canon flashes, Vivitar 283, 285 and 4600 (even had the bare bulb) as well. Although the flash I used often was the Metz CT hammerhead flash + external lead acid battery pack to keep up with my motor drives.

also, just thinking a little out of the box, in the early years, there was a limited asa range, ie 400/800 top, so to shoot indoors, at all, or under artificial lights inside buildings then the flash corrected not just this asa issue, but that of white balance of the daylight balanced negative stock, so colors came out true, and you COULD use colour indoors, not be restricted to B&W stock, and at a low asa ( the flash in effect PULLED the film up from 100 asa to 800 giving the exposure required for a good shot).

  • @qbnscholar

    Coolisimo, as always.
I am old enough to remember the Kodak flashcubes and Instamatics when they first came out, how much I wanted one as a youngster and teen but could not afford them. (My family did not own an Instamatic until the mid to late 70s and my parents rarely took photos of anything; I do not recall them having a camera once we were in the US.) To me, even now, flash photography evokes a sense of excitement, of being there-ness. Of grooviness. Of la dolce vita. My ongoing love of photography and its flashiness and ability to capture eventful moments of fun and pizzaz helps me understand the current love of sharing our zippy moments online constantly, though I rarely participate and when I do share, it is after using my new baby (Sony a7r3) and editing and processing my work. And most all my photography done in natural light.
    Most.
Except on Halloween 2020 and 2021. And hopefully for this Halloween, too. In 2020, in the midst of the COVID lockdown, I went to the Castro and took photos Halloween night (a Saturday) with a rented Sony speedlight. I think I got some great photos of Halloweeners masked and unmasked, unabashedly celebrating in spite of COVID. There were not many celebrants, evidenced by how empty the background and spaces around the people I photographed are, but I had fun and love some of those images. They pop the way the folks I photographed popped. Same in 2021, though that night there were fewer folks out (it was a Sunday), yet I still got a few cool photos. This year Halloween falls on a Monday and I hope I can rent the same Sony speedlight and spend the day in SF, going to the Castro later and having fun with my camera.
BTW, you mentioned we should be grateful for technical advances that make photography safer and easier and I soooo agree, since I am enjoying photography now because digital equipment makes it easy for me to focus on the subject matter and (almost) forget about the technical. Having tried analogue a couple of times, I know I am a digital photographer. Who knows what chemical misadventures I would live through if I tried developing my own film. I love this art form because I can practice digitally, as well as learn digitally (watching great content by you and a few other TH-cam photographers and online courses and articles and such) and connect with other photographers around the world digitally, too. But I get the romance of shooting film, the deep sense of satisfaction in working with it and the adventure of learning it. I get it because it is how I feel about digital photography.
And speaking of my analogue years, I did use the on camera popup flash a few times way back then and recall a couple of photos that I actually liked and still remember. (Really, I only recall 2 B&W photos from my first 3-4 years analogue attempt.) But again, I never bothered to learn about this art form enough back then and lost the desire to keep shooting. I thought I could be Helmut Newton or Scavullo (funny to think that back then I didn't even know who Ansel Adams was) just because I was using am SLR with a pop flash and a zoom lens...
OK. I rambled enough. Thank you so much for this video. Oh, and thank you for mentioning Herb Ritts, one of my favorite portrait photographers. I did not know he used flash photography.
    Thank you.

Hah! That took me back!! I took my first photos with a Box Brownie in the 1950s, and still have some somewhere. The first camera I owned, in the 60s, was an Instamatic with those flash cubes. I may have the camera in one of my boxes somewhere...
Then a SunPak on my Praktica and now Speedlights on my Nikon film and digital cameras.
I acquired a couple of umbrellas and stands as part of a bundle where I actually wanted some of the other stuff, so now I have to try out remote flashes in a studio environment. We have to keep learning...
My preference has always been available light, but sometimes you just need that bit extra.
Quite a journey - thanks for the memories T.

The captions you put on-screen are typically far too small for me to read. My eyesight isn’t perfect yet it’s pretty good. The only way I’d be able to read the captions is to stop the video and zoom the screen.
I was hoping you’d get right down to the nitty gritty of flash work - how & why to underexpose backgrounds and how many stops of underexposure are typically useful.
Other than making us aware of the history of flash photography and its accomplished practitioners as well as the existence of the Godox retro products, I didn’t find anything here that will help me in my work.
I have the Lux Senior, a Rolleicord and a C220 Mamiya. It’s my plan to use foreground flash on the subjects while simultaneously underexposing the backgrounds to subdue those and therefore draw attention the subject.
I appreciate your enthusiasm, hard work and generosity. I’m grateful for your videos.

  • @andyvan5692
    @andyvan5692 ปีที่แล้ว

also Ms/Mrs Hopper, the flash was also just as much a way of capturing action, as a fill-in light, as if you research the old cameras, LF, MF they have a max shutter speed of 1/500th of a second, and 35mm cameras of 1/1000th unlike the 1/4000\1/8000 you have on todays dslr/mirrorless cameras; so this extra light quite litterally provided the extra stop of exposure, as well as the 'freezing' ability of the action (1/20,000th of a second), which the shutter speeds of the day could NOT, so this explains the 'surge' that you describe, as this freezing ability opened up far more genr`e of photography to the adverage person, that in previous years only the 'Pro' photographer could accomplish, with a fully equiped studio.

When I was 11 or 12 years old, my father bought me a Kodak Instamatic 50 as a newyear present back in Tehran. It had a little flash attachment that I would mount on top of the camera and insert the bulb. That was my first experience of using flash. Decades later my first serious flashgun was a Vivitar 283 with a remote sensor and a manual attachment. Although I have a couple of Studio Pro systems from Bowens, I have not used any of them in years. I guess these days with the popularity of Digital cameras with iso zillions, the need for a flash is greatly reduced, although it can be a very creative tool in the right hands.

The flash must be the biggest disappointment all exciting activities lose some stimulus as you start to work at the perfection, but none more than the flash or first time it half blinds someone and leaves amazing contrast but with practice is never used again, in quite the same way.
