I saw this series when I was a kid in the 80's.. later on in searched and searched trying to find it again because I could not remember the name.. I was so excited to find it again.. great series.. one of my favorite of all times..
Glad you found it again @valiantvideo9! I have vague memories of cartoons which I really want to remember! The internet and especially TH-cam has enabled me and others to find childhood memories (for better or worse hahaha). Starvengers remains one of my fondest memories, and I'm glad I could share it with others who remember it just as fondly!

I watched this and starketeers when I was a kid but living in Britain you can’t find it anywhere am not sure how I had the two episodes that I did of them I would live to watch these but I can’t
There are about 5 or 6 Getter series now, so you got a lot to watch.
This aired in Boston on Tuesdays. It's probably my favorite of all the Force Five shows. I still remember the episode with an enemy robot which utilized these huge spinning spiked wheels on each arm as its main weapons. It was probably the Starvenger's toughest opponent. Later in the series Star Dragun was upgraded with the Star Energize/Star Fire superweapon which they used as their "finishing move" in many battles. Of course no discussion of Getter Robo is complete without mentioning Martian Successor Nadesico's "show within a show," Gekiganger 3, which may just be the most affectionate parody/homage in the history of anime.
Thanks for watching @BCBaron! Yes Yes Yes! This is the definitive anime of my childhood! I remember the episode you were mentioning, the Starvengers team really did have some close situations. But I always thought their toughest opponents were the spies who infiltrated their base from time to time. Particularly the triplets who posed as a single person to befriend all 3 pilots Paladin (Hayato), Hummer (Ryoma), and Foul-tip (Benki) got to know them, learned their weaknesses. After they sabotaged the Starvenger robot and it came down to hand to hand combat! That was a great ending! Nadesco lol hard not to fanboy at winks to Giant robots in newer anime! 😁
Just want to clear up the misconception that the designs were Go Nagai's. Ken Ishikawa is the creator of Getter Robo and its subsequent series. Nagai had the original idea with transforming cars but never developed it. Ishikawa was given permission to further develop the idea and changed it to jets, completely redesigning it in the process. Nagai is given co-creator status because the rough draft that inspired Getter was his but it really is Ishikawa's baby.
I highly suggest the original manga. It's one of the seminal super robot works.
Thanks @Christopher Blair! I sort of knew about Ken Ishikawa, but I always associated Go Nagai as the creator because of his name being the first that comes up in the Credits (at least on the Jim Terry Productions english version). Thanks for clearing up who created what in the series!
Ken Ishikawa's early style was so similar to Go Nagai's, I guess they had a team of illustrators who would illustrate for them?
I am still a huge fan, and the manga is still one of those things which I'm scared to read as it might change my perspective on the Show which is my childhood hahaha.

The idea for the three transforming robots was suggested during the development of what was to become "Mazinger Z," so Ken Ishikawa cannot be cited as "creator" - Ishikawa was one of Nagai's assistants at Dynamic Productions - which is why both men are credited as they both contributed and collaborated on this story and its characters.

One special teaching of the show was combining teamwork with needing to switch the lead according to the situation. Each of the combined forms did things the others couldn't. It was a good teaching.
The "morphing" of the Getter Robo iterations was caused by the Getter Rays on a special alloy, which caused it to "morph", which was developed and perfected by Dr. Saotome (Copernicus). It's total fantasy, but that's the internal logic for how the robots transform.
They never bothered explaining that in the NA version. Jim Terry just trusted kids to be amazed at the morphing hahaha! Don't ask Don't Tell! 😁
I watched a lot of Japanese cartoons as a kid. Getter Robo (Starvengers) by far has THE best theme/score.

The Getter Robo theme occupied my whole childhood. Perfect key, tempo, arrangement--you couldn't help but feel hype when you hear it.
Good list, though I put Gatchaman's themes ahead of Starvengers, but it still kicks.

A badass theme from the legendary Japanese composer Shunsuke Kikuchi.
One of my favorite cartoons of all time, even though I probably only watched a few episodes as a kid. I could never figure out when I'd be able to watch a Force Five episode that featured Starvengers. (Ok, give me a break, I was a kid and those were some early mornings back then!) I've been wanting some Starvengers figures/toys for a while, but they don't come easy or cheap. Thanks for the video and memories!.

Great recap. Loved this show and Starvengers was my favorite of the Force Five series too. My personal favorite was Star Poseidon, but as a kid I used to get frustrated because Poseidon would have an enemy on the ropes and they would switch to Star Dragon to "finish him off". Oh well.

I was just thrilled to stumble upon my favorite cartoon from the 90s today. Well in India it was broadcast in the early 90s. I would be so pissed if I missed the intro of Starvengers and Grendizer back then. Brings back Memories of my teenage years. After GI Joe, this was the next favorite cartoon. Transformers weren't so popular back then in India. Pure Nostalgia!!! Thank you dude.

The Pandemonium race really first appeared at the last episode of original Getter Robo...Right after the Empire of dinosaur race was destroyed the space demons decide to begin their conquest after their rivals were wiped out by Getter team.

The Pandemonium Empire's main ship reminded me of the Comet Empire's fortress ship from the second season of StarBlazers/Space Battleship Yamato during the return trip of the Star Force from Iscandar.

As a kid growing up in the 80's. I was literally obsessed with The Force Five. Starvengers was usually on Tuesdays.
Still my favorite super robot, and I'm glad that the creator Ken Ishikawa and I share the same birthday!

@@megajayretro I watched starvengers long ago on betamax lol but I I watched the original getter series before that so I was weirded out as a kid. Even Mazinger was turned into Tranzor Z in the american adaptation. I still collect robot toys and I have a jumbo/shogun of getter g which I also love.

I used to mix up Starvengers and Spacecateers. They have the same theme in terms of big guy, thin guy , and the leader in red. So I appreciate you bringing back my not so good memories of the shows.
lol yeah anime hero archetypes often overlap between series. Just look at the different Voltron.

It’s actually Getter Robo G! I still have my vhs copy from Family Home Entertainment. I also still have my “The Adventures of Ultraman” VHS which was recut from the Ultraman Jonias anime.

I already knew what Getter Robo was since the series was shown in my country way back. I was familiar with it because of the stickers my brother collected when he was younger.
When Force Five aired in the 90's and saw Starvengers I was like; "Hey... Isn't that Getter Robo?"
For the longest time I assumed that Getter Robo Armageddon was the first Getter series to come out in the US, It's interesting that Getter Robo G came out over here earlier.
I loved Star Arrow and Star Poseidon, but Star Dragon was SO overexposed!

I've been a life long fan. I never liked the blood thirsty maniacs they wrote into the characterization. I mean I had difficulty discerning the good and bad guys after a while

Hi I'm a new subscriber I'm loving your content especially the force five stuff it took me a long time to find these and then burn them onto DVD they're not the greatest quality, I'm wondering if these were ever released in DVD or Blu-ray form that I could purchase. I feel very lucky to have these on a burned CDs but I would love an official collection did that ever come out to your knowledge thank you.
"Dragon Formation......switch ON!".....Come ON!.....Is there anything better than that? The only other thing that can compare is "Star Energize.........Star FIRE!" I always get shivers when I see these clips from my childhood. The series is the greatest animated series ever made....and it's not even close. Force Five and in particular, "Starvengers" was "All World" in terms of quality and coolness. There are so many others that were great but a noteworthy distant second would be the series "Spaceketeers".
i had this on vhs as a young un and all i remember aside from the good bots is that the villain pronounced robot as ROWBOT

omg this is from my childhood! how do I get the American version of this particular vintage.
oh and the getter robo has been the staple mech robot in the super robot wars video games series. and it also includes original voice cast from their represented every robot anime titles(grendizer and gaiking also included).

Out of all the Force Five that was released, my personal faves in order are: Danguard Ace, StarVengers, Grandizer while Spaceketeers and Gai-King were tied as my least favorite.

Have you seen the series in Japanese with subtitles? Even though I also grew up with the Starvengers version.... it pales in comparison with the original one.

my favorite thing about starveners when i first saw the first episode was the burning getter 1. not knowing there was a series before Getter robo G. it started off with a history of previous robots. wasnt until the late 90s that i found out the japanese name of getterrobo
Burning Getter 1, yeah that was Super interesting. Its funny, in the Starvengers Movie which was released as a stand alone video tape release. I think you actually see the Burning Getter 1, but they don't show it collapsing. Its more like a campfire where everyone is just standing around haha. I'm surprised that you didn't mention that Starvengers was the second series of the Getter Robo franchice, called Getter Robo G. The original Robot from the 1sr series could be seen briefly in episode one burning/melting into ruin as they held Fow-tip's precessor's picture as he actually died fighting in it.
I used to trip on mescaline to this :D

if someone who grew in starvengers anime, the japanese name of the pandemonium empire is hyakki-teikoku.
translating that into "the empire of hundred demons" so it makes sense for usa tv censorship.

Thanks for watching @Dravel Katsumi! Ah.... Ok so Starvengers like most early anime suffers from continuity issues. For example, we know from the beginning of the series that the Starvenger Robots are run off of the Omicron Generator created by Doctor Copernicus which has limitless power capabilites. But in one episosde Star Dragon runs out of "fuel" and has to rely on the female pilot Series to come and re-fuel Star Dragon before it can continue to do battle!

I've seen these. The thing that bugged me was that they used Dragon so disproportionately. Then they added their boring overkill "star fire" attack that only worked for Dragon and made Arrow and Poseidon virtually irrelevant.

Though after Paladin died Series had a key episode where she used the speedy Arrow to defeat the enemy... Only to have the Star Dragon finish him off anyway haha.

@@petervachon6989 Nah it's Gai King. He is talking about the mask open attack that Gai King got when he and the dragon space ship got trashed on the moon and they had to repair with some sort of moon alloy.
@@TabbyTimeOut I was thinking of the guy from Grandizer Commander Ding's overlord who's face would split open and a tiny witch came out of his skull. Often admonishing him.

Excellent background discussion @b switzer, since this is Getta Robo G the original Getta Robo was also destroyed in the Pyre, and then replaced by Getter Dragon, Getter Liger, and Getter Poseidon, which were upgrades of the original Getta Robo 1 2 and 3.
Go Nagai has always been a favourite of mine, his imagination and wonder as well as his outlook on post apocalyptic futures has always spoken to me on a literary level. Devilman in particular is a series I am looking forward to reviewing!

The continuity errors are hilarious... The original getter robo was completely destroyed...no wreckage was left...yet at the beginning of getter robot g...the survivors, mourning for musashi are burning getter robot 1 on its funeral pyre when there is no robot left to cremate.
Lol Yes I remember seeing that on a Japanese fan-sub a while back. I didn't know that the whole thing was destroyed though. I guess Musashi reall did go down with the ship!

The Getter Machines were destroyed early in the last episode of Getter Robo. Musashi died piloting Michiru's command machine full of explosives into the Dinosaur Empires base thus destroying them.
