  • The Tallboy is the bike that opened the door for full-suspension 29ers. Or, rather, it was that bike. Now, it has a slack head angle, more travel, a joint in one hand and your kneepads in the other. Wanna party? Find the full review and much, much more at BikeMag.com.

    This is a great bike, very capable and climbs very well IMO. I have the S build. I was concerned about pedaling efficiency coming from hard tail for many years. I was very pleasantly surprised and very happy with the bike. I originally wanted the Ripley, but Ibis is way behind and my order kept getting pushed out longer and longer. I went and demoed the TB and it’s been awesome so far.

    • @MTB_Rider_96
      @MTB_Rider_96 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@11dhillons Part of it is the rear suspension configuration making the Santa Cruz stiffer feeling frame on climbs and flow trails, and the head tube angle. I do almost as much climbing as I do descending, so I like the reviewers comments on climbing ability of this bike. But it really is a difficult choice with all the options out there.

      @@MTB_Rider_96 Don't do it!!! DEMO! DEMO! DEMO!
      I was in a similar boat obsessing over reviews and bike Geo for over a year. I then decide to put an order in for the new Occam. Well it was a 6 month wait and I got the chance to demo it 2 months before mine was going to arrive. I also demoed a Ripley because that was another bike at the top of my list. Well I was blown away by the Ripley. So much so that I managed to cancel the order on the Occam and I now own a Ripley.

      The decider for me, between tb4 and Ripley, was that my lbs has SC, and Ibis only comes as mail order, in Scandinavia, from a dodgy “bad review” online shop, and my lbs is killer... The good reviews didn’t hurt either..

    I rode the top spec AXS build with the reserve wheels in Santa Cruz at their headquarters and was absolutely blown away. I had just demoed an Ibis Ripley and while that bike was great and pedaled really well, the Tallboy just felt like it could do so much more than basic XC trails. Felt almost bottomless on the SC home trails. Looking forward to trying it back home in NC!

    • @sjcrawford42
      @sjcrawford42 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      also in NC, down to same 2. Another reviewer said tallboy felt more bottomless but had to be ridden fast to feel good whereas ripley was always smooth. Lots of slow twisty rooty trails in NC where I am with no real drops/jumps. Leaning toward ripley myself but what do you think about that slow/fast comment?

    • @jakemoya-mendez2488
      @jakemoya-mendez2488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Steven Crawford I don’t agree with that from my experience. The Tallboy felt super efficient with no pedal bob and handled great even on smooth flowy sections. The Ripley is an animal when pedaling, but I don’t think the Tallboy gives up anything against the Ripley except weight and it makes up for it with its added capability in my opinion.

    I liked the Review. So far you guys are 4 for 4 on providing good content in a short 8 minute window. So far this year, your reviews are outdoing Pink Bike!
    and Congrats Bike Mag! Took you guys about 10 years to NOT Categorize a bike based on it's Travel numbers. You guys figured this out late, but better late than never.
    Travel numbers and suspension design never really tell the whole story whole how a bike will pedal or how it will desecend. It is the bikes overall kinematics is what determines this!
    I too would classify the TallBoy 4 as a Trail Bike and NOT an XC bike. The TB4 also pops because of it's low travel numbers, but yet it's Geo allows it to descend better than bikes with 30mm more travel. People will say the Tall Boy would be the ultimate if it had 30mm more travel, but what they fail to realize is if it did, then it would totally change the Dynamics of they bike!
    I love the TB4 as is, but it would be nice if it's frame was about 1 lb lighter. I think I would pick the Ripley V4 over the Tallboy V4 after weighing all the positives and negatives.
    The Ripley V4:
    - pedals better than the TB4
    - is about 1 lb lighter. Even a 145mm travel Ripmo pedals better than a TB4.
    - A Ripley V4 can get down to 24 lbs with race tires, light weight wheelset, and Fox step cast fork.
    - pops a little better than the TB4.
    - The Tallboy does descend better than the V4, but not by much.
    - The TB4 also looks much better than the Ripley V4, so it has that going for it too.
    Hope you guys get to review a Ripley V4, would love to hear what you guys think about this bike.
    Keep up the great reviews!
    Love,
    Cartmann
