      Thanks! Glad you found it helpful. 😃 What I forgot to mention in the video is that when you drop the images onto the map, when you export images from dt with metadata, the geo location info will be included in the expected jpegs, which is neat. You can exclude that from happening though, in cases where privacy is an issue.

    Thanks! I like your rating system. I've struggled with devising one that is consistent where one or two stars mean the same thing at the beginning of the rating session as at the end.

    It's always fascinating to explore workflows!!! You've been very clear, as usual. Never played with the map; will try! I learned with you how to use DT as manager some years ago but I still struggle to tag my collection (and never really started to back-tag my jpgs from before DT; I've lost edits&else when I moved away from Picasa… 😔)

      As I've said in the past, the sooner you get started with tagging, the better. It will always be a monster of a task when you first begin, but the longer you wait, the worse it will get. Best to bite the bullet and get started.

    Great workflow vid.I was wondering when do you create a copy for the editing and when you just edit the raw file directly?

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks. Really, for me, there's no difference. I can, 99% of the time, get a finished image directly from the RAW file without going to an external pixel-based editor (like Gimp, or Affinity Photo).

      @@audio2uI was thinking of the duplicates you can create in DT.

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh, you mean when do I use duplicates? All. The. Time!
      Whenever I want to do a new process on an image I've previously developed, I always create a duplicate (these days). Because I've noticed how my processing has improved since 2018, so now I keep all the old edits so I can see how I've progressed.

    • @matsknutsson114
      @matsknutsson114 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@audio2uclever! Think I'll adapt this way of editing on duplicates.

    Hi can I ask a newbie question? Before I do I'm loving your tutorials and they are a great help because I've moved off LR and Windows and onto Linux and [am beginning] Darktable. At 1:04 you import with default naming rules. Why do you choose to leave the default naming by date etc? Will I lose something later on if I named my collection e.g. Holiday Santorini?

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Look, it's entirely a matter of personal preference. There's no right or wrong here. I prefer to leave my folders in date form, and then add tags to every image. If I tag all my images, then I can always find any image by searching based on tags.
      If you want to name your folders by where you were or what you were doing, go for it! No, you won't lose anything by doing that.

    • @saturdayscience5540
      @saturdayscience5540 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Ah I see the difference. By modifying the naming rules it changes the name of the actual folder that gets created. I guess like most folk my photos are stored in folders by date. And your method leaves that folder structure in place and leverages DT collections. Thanks I'm straight now!

    Wow! Amazing tips. I am just reorganizing my library of over 2 TB of photos (since I was terrible and never bothered to keep things organized). I guess the rest of 2025 will be me culling my photos.

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Creating a structured collection can be a very daunting task if you've already got a large collection that is not well managed.
      But spending the time to get it in order will reap rewards down the track that you can't even imagine right now.
      You know that old Buddhist saying... "The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time time is today".
      That applies here! 😃

      @@audio2u I know you make yourself quite vulnerable because you share so openly. Would you be prepared to outline your tagging hierarchy if and when you make a tagging video? I realise that there are many ways to approach the matter but I think I tend to create too many layers in my hierarchy. From the short bits shown your approach seems very workable.

    Hi Bruce, what directory structure are you using? Is it year/month/day or year/month only? How do you manage the pictures made using different cameras? Do they have their own dirs? Directories for raw and processed pictures? Directories for different variants (resolution for print / web, different processing etc)? It would be great to know that.

    • @audio2u
      @audio2u  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      My folder structure is "exif.year/exif.month/exif.year-exif.month-exif.day/"
      All images are stored in the folder for the day in which they were shot (hence why the correct time being set in-camera is so important!), using their original in-camera filename. No, I don't rename my files.
      No, I don't bother with sorting images by camera, because you can filter a collection quite easily if you really need to see just the images from one camera (I can see why you might do that a lot of you shot weddings and your second shooter uses a different camera).
      No, I don't have folders for exported images, as I generally don't import my exports. That's the whole point of shooting RAW. I can always run a fresh export when necessary for different resolution or file type etc.
      As for different variants of an image, that's where I use the duplicate manager. I name duplicates according to their purpose. And I have saved export presets for all my common export jobs (Facebook, wallpaper, Insta, etc).

      @@audio2u Hi Bruce, thanks for sharing your workflow in this video. I understand you do not rename files. Should you have to do that, how would you fit that in your workflow? I do rename, generally after development is done and right before exporting. Currently for me it's a pretty simple task in LR, trying to understand how that could be done efficiently in darktable as darktable does not have a file manager.

    Instead of importing images i find it easier to create a folder structure myself like /2024/10-00_Oktober for general images that month and /2024/10-10_Aurora for an event and then adding those folders to darktable.
