As a South Bend resident Pete is my mayor and is everything he seems to be. Kind, caring, and honest. And he gets things done, he doesn't just make promises. Great makings for a president and a HUGE refreshing change from what we're stuck with now!
Please let more people know that he's a doer,not just a great speaker. I cannot understand why people don't see the substance he brings and the accomplishments he has achieved as a mayor, and how wonderful he will be as a president who can actually get things done in the WH. People keep saying he has no policies, but he clearly does. He may not be as focused on them right now as he is with trying to let people get to know who he is at heart. I feel like if he had just jumped straight into policies without first introducing himself, people would be like "who the heck is this guy & why should I listen to him when I know nothing about his values and what he stands for?" I feel like people just want to find something negative to say about any candidate they aren't pulling for, rather than get to know them. Pete has my vote for sure!!!

This is the only interview I saw so far with politicians and their spouses that is so egalitarian! Nearly all the other interviews have men as the main talker with their wives sitting slightly behind them smile quietly. The moment when Pete asked Chasten how he thinks, I almost cry....
1GoldRunner I agree. It is a sign of both good and bad things in our society. Chasten is treated so respectfully because he is a man and therefore not seen as decoration. Yet it is still incredible that they are both respected as a couple when a same sex POTUS and FGOTUS (first gentleman) was unimaginable a decade ago. It is an interesting dynamic with a lot of nuance that should be discussed.
I couldn't honestly reply in the affirmative. As much as I and my family want him to make it there, I just don't think the country is ready for it. I also don't see that as a reflection of my beliefs, but rather the zeitgeist of America. I'd be quite happy to be proven wrong.

How Chasten described why he enjoyed teaching was one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. He means it to, teaching is his passion. These two come off very authentic.

I love the fact that Pete being the objective of the interview, himself lets his husband speak freely and be on the center of the attention. You can see how he actually enjoys yielding the spotlight. That itself speak a lot about him. Great man. America and the region deserve him as a president.
The (so obvious they shove it down your throat) goal of the interview is to evoke that very reaction in you. The goal isn't to hear about policies. If the goal of an interview is to hear about the candidate's policies, then you don't want the spouse to say anything.

James Barlow - As someone who has voted GOP since after Al Gore in 2000 (including Bush, Romney and Trump/Pence), I took absolutely no offense to Pete’s statement of defense of his choice of lifestyle. I really like Pence for many reasons (security, economics, etc) but think that some of the social issue stances make my party look archaic at times. Buttigieg, I believe, was smart to get the topic out of the way before getting into more specific policy roll outs.

I've met both of them, and they are very down to Earth as they appear to be. Chasten is incredibly friendly, speaks quietly, and listens loudly. He hears every word, and asks questions. I told him about my daughter, who was a micro preemie. So, I'm sure he remembered our conversation. My words to him were "it can be done". My husband and I were going to try adoption when we discovered I had miscarried, but still pregnant. This went on for several days. I lost at least 4, more likely 5, and were able to save 1, all in 1 pregnancy.
There are way better candidates out there, this guy doesn't have any policies laid out on his website. He is substance-less, thats why the dnc loves him, he will maintain the beautiful status quo.

What decent persons these two are. They give each other space, even while belonging! Almost humanly difficult if not impossible. I am a bit surprised at seeing some people here are complaining that this interview contains no policy information. Yes, we all agree that good policy is at the core of the presidential election. That being said, I believe this interview does not aim to do that. We will have a lot of other opportunities to know how Pete and his team formulate their policies. In this particular one, Pete is with his spouse. Usually, when we see interviews like this, we are hoping to see how well this candidate can also be a human being, just like you and me. We won't expect that their spouse will also be in the same interviews when they are talking about international policies, or, would you? Therefore, for those who complain that this interview is not informative about policies, OK, we know that you are very rational, highly educated, and demanding evidence-based policies. Bravo. However, this interview is not made for you. You may not be their targeted audience. In this interview, try use another set of criteria to judge their performances.
I would not mind some small amount of personal fluff pieces like this . The problem is that I have looked pretty hard and very few of his interviews/statements/ etc are one iota more substantive than this one. Yet it is still incredible that they are both respected as a couple when a same sex POTUS and FGOTUS (first gentleman) was unimaginable a decade ago. It is an interesting dynamic with a lot of nuance that should be discussed.

James Barlow - As someone who has voted GOP since after Al Gore in 2000 (including Bush, Romney and Trump/Pence), I took absolutely no offense to Pete’s statement of defense of his choice of lifestyle. I really like Pence for many reasons (security, economics, etc) but think that some of the social issue stances make my party look archaic at times. Buttigieg, I believe, was smart to get the topic out of the way before getting into more specific policy roll outs.

I've met both of them, and they are very down to Earth as they appear to be. Chasten is incredibly friendly, speaks quietly, and listens loudly. He hears every word, and asks questions. I told him about my daughter, who was a micro preemie. So, I'm sure he remembered our conversation. My words to him were "it can be done". My husband and I were going to try adoption when we discovered I had miscarried, but still pregnant. This went on for several days. I lost at least 4, more likely 5, and were able to save 1, all in 1 pregnancy.
I am in the vortex of hope. I feel better about myself, my marriage, the world, politics and the need to make it all FUN. Thanks guys!

Rewatching this after 1,5 years, in August 2020 in the middle of a pandemic it makes me feel so calm and hopeful ... I’m going to bookmark this and come back to it whenever the world seems to crumble once again.
Pete is a great listener and a great speaker. He really connects with people, I can tell. That's why i want to vote for him. He is a good man with values that connects with people, even if he disagrees with them. And his husband seems to be a very calm, collective soul.

I am a bit surprised at seeing some people here are complaining that this interview contains no policy information.
Yes, we all agree that good policy is at the core of the presidential election. That being said, I believe this interview does not aim to do that. We will have a lot of other opportunities to know how Pete and his team formulate their policies. In this particular one, Pete is with his spouse. Usually, when we see interviews like this, we are hoping to see how well this candidate can also be a human being, just like you and me. We won't expect that their spouse will also be in the same interviews when they are talking about international policies, or, would you?
Therefore, for those who complain that this interview is not informative about policies, OK, we know that you are very rational, highly educated, and demanding evidence-based policies. Bravo. However, this interview is not made for you. You may not be their targeted audience. In this interview, try use another set of criteria to judge their performances.
I would not mind some small amount of personal fluff pieces like this . The problem is that I have looked pretty hard and very few of his interviews/statements/ etc are one iota more substantive than this one. Which leaves us with his fairly middle of the road corporatist democrat history in politics to judge his intentions by.
