I wish they'd done a super extra mega deluxe version of "Perfect strangers" instead since it should be it's 40th anniversary in 2024. "Machine Head" has had several treatments like this over the years and I personally think it's time to lift the eyes to other Deep Purple albums especially the 80s and 90s stuff that seem almost forgotten these days...
As a life long dp fan here I always Thought MH had a sterile , dry sound almost robotic. It is their LZ 4 though. All songs are great. It wasn't until made in japan that the songs really came to life. But after hearing some snippets of this remix it sounds phenomenal. He has breathed new life into these tracks.
I watched this right after I listened to Dweezil's remix for the first time. I was so completely blown away by hearing it I had to see what you said about it. So happy you liked this AMAZING remix. It certainly is like hearing it for the 1st time! All the little bits that DZ brought to the front made my heart thump! Incredible!! I was so completely blown away by it, I wrote to Dweezil to thank him. I NEVER do that. "Break a leg Frank!" Thanks for your review.
You've sold me. Pictures of Home is my favourite song (if such a thing exists). I'm looking forward to hearing all this "new" music. - outro, intros, screams and everything different to everything else.
After listening constantly for a few days, I'm not convinced by the Dweezil remix. A times it seems too busy and some of the "extra" effects are an unnecessary indulgence. The simplicity of the original and Roger's remix are perfect for an album recorded by five guys in a corridor and a bloke in a van. There are moments like the beginnning of "Space Trucking" which are superbly done but other things are unwarranted. Why add effects to Ritchie's guitar solo on "When a Blind Man Cries", it's just wrong to ruin the original bell tone. Great channel.
What a beautiful set that is. Dweezil always does a great job, and from the sounds of it he has done it again. Machine Head is in no way my favorite Deep Purple record. I like In Rock and Burn a ton more, so I hope someday they get the same type of treatment. I would definitely be up for that. Thanks for the excellent review video.
I still have the cassette of Machine Head that I bought in the 1970's ... perhaps its time that I should upgrade it to vinyl or CD 🤣🤣 (the cassette still plays perfectly though!)
Wow, that's a comprehensive review. Thanks, Phil. You have painted a wonderful picture of musical delight, and I can't wait for the new Purple experience. Cheers mate.
As always, a very nice review. I love multi-format boxes and if possible, I always buy this version. I'm expecting my copy in April. I'm also a big fan of bootlegs. The fact is that I grew up in the Soviet Union, where access to music was very limited and we listened to low-quality cassettes rewritten many times on poor equipment, so our ears were adapted to discern music among noise and crackles.
An overwhelming collection you have there! And why not as Machine Head is so good. Will have to get it and hope to see Burn eventually get this treatment.
They are mine too Phil..by accident I was listening to a Dio tape in 86 and suddenly during a song solo someone dubbed over Smoke on the Water Made in Japan version right from the mid guitar solo section all the way to the climatic duel between Lord and Blackmore. Stuff of legends..I ordered mine today. Best regards.
Monumental album. Absolutely life changing record. If you go back and compare Machine Head with other albums by other bands at that period you will realize how polished and futuristic was almighty Machine Head. Martin Birch did a brilliant job. Masterfully done. And of course the band itself… what can I say… Five brilliant musicians was making a history they couldn’t even imagine. Ordered immediately when it became available for preorder. Thanks for a great review! Long live rock and roll!
Aloha Phil , thanks for a great review , I have pre ordered my copy , it's released over here on March 29 , I had the pleasure of seeing Deep Purple at Birmingham Town Hall in the 70's , I met & chatted with Roger Glover at the artist exit , he was very gracious & it was a meeting I'll never forget . Best Wishes from Kona Hawaii .
Fantastic. This is one of several albums that is truly in my DNA. No difference can escape my entire being. So a new master that comes from the analog tapes baring a new experience is more than welcome. I haven`t played Machine Head in many years. Not because it isn`t awesome but `cause I`m tired of it. ( Fireball is my favorite ) Now I`m truly excited to listen to Deep Purple`s most iconic album again....for the first time....again.
I was unsure about getting this Phil! But your enthusiasm and detailed look at it has made me put it on order! You provide a great insight with releases keep them coming! 👍
Great review. Roger Glover's remix was a revelation to me when I first heard it. You've got me very intrigued to hear what Dweezil Zappa's mix sounds like...
Thanks Phil, I've been waiting patiently for the past few days after you mentioned you were reviewing this remix. I mentioned my reservations about the original mix and production because I always thought the Made In Japan versions of the songs blew the studio versions out of the water. Your enthusiasm has sufficiently piqued my interest and I will definitely seek this box set out and listen with intent. Thanks once again for the channel.
Glover's remix has been my go-to since it came out, so I never bothered with subsequent re-releases. Now you have whetted my appetite for the Dweezil mix. 💸💸😊
You mean the one that said in the liner notes that THIS will be the last time they remix/remaster it? I did like Roger's mixes better than the original ones, but here we go again! 😅
Ya me llegó a Colombia y si es muy sencillo, pero es muy bella la edición y aunque es costosa, está Joya vale cada centavo. Estoy muy Feliz de tenerla y disfrutarla.
Wow, thank you for such a great and in depth review. You captured a lot of what I feel about the album. Like most of us I only heard Smoke On The Water so far. Now I can look forward to the rest of it. I'm excited!
Hi Phil. Love the overview! Have heard Smoke..., and Dweezil's brought out some eerie effects that make the song sound even more menacing - in a good way. I hope he gets to do a remix of Who Do We Think We Are? too. That album needs a reappraisal, being between Machine Head and Burn. Can't wait to hear all the Machine Head remixes, especially on the underrated Maybe I'm a Leo and Never Before.
waited and bought Machine Head the day it first came out in 1972 - just as exciting now waiting for the new box set to arrive! hope they do a new Fireball set.
the remaster sounded great on the cd in this set, very happy with that but the remix will take some time to get used to - take an old classic DB5 and stick some go faster stripes along the side, a large bore exhaust and and a few "bolt on goodies" and what have you got? a little too much reverb and meddling for me, "Blind Man" would have been better left as a remaster as would the vinyl disc, but there you go....but looking forward to hearing those live goodies.
Hi Phil… thank you for this wonderful review ! I cannot wait until my copy arrives. It’s due March 29 here in Canada . I am going to take your advice and listen to the remix like I am hearing the album for the first time. In anticipation I listened to the remix of Dio’s Holy Diver last night like I was hearing it for the first time. I have had that boxset for a while now and when listening to the Holy Diver remix when I first bought the set I was listening to see what differences I could spot compared to the original which we all know so well. Taking your advice and listening to the remix it last night and consciously saying this is the first time hearing this album it truly makes a difference ! It was so enjoyable ! I’m going to do the same thing with Black Sabbath remix of Live Evil which I love already. Thank you so much Phil ! I can’t wait for my copy of Machine Head to get here ! Chez
I really like these box sets that concentrates on one album, as long as there’s a lot of bonus material and a real nice book. Those career box sets once served a purpose when the box sets first came out. But I’m really glad that we’re getting to the point where there’s a box set for an album, I thought the Who’s Next - Lifehouse box was excellent.
Gracias Phill, a mi tambien me parece muy costoso para lo simple de la presentacion, además en Colombia 80 dólares es mucho dinero, pero El Machine Head es muy importante en la historia de la musica. 😊 Lo espero para abril
Many thanks Phil, that was excellent! The '71 set was also putting me off so I'm pleased to hear that the low expectations were offset. As my primary interest was really the Dolby Atmos mix, I was going to hold off with this set but I've been swayed after watching your video (FOMO should a standalone Blu Ray not be forthcoming!). It's very refreshing to hear about the actual musical content of the set, so many unboxing videos don't mention this, which doesn't allow for an informed decision. Thanks once again.
Fabulous review, Phil. I have been a Purplehead since "Fireball" and I pretty much get everything. But, due to the price, I was wondering if this is a "Must Have" and you cemented it for me. My pre-order is now In.
Greetings from Western Australia, g'day Phil , I have The 40th anniversary cd set. No vinyl , several remix cds , the 72. Concert and a blu ray . The book is hardback . I have a remastered vinyl copy as well. Like you I love Deep Purple and I think this will do for me on this release. PS totally agree with you on bootlegs 😂❤
Love this band. Have a huge DP collection. But a bit sceptical about another remaster etc. More of the same. Sometimes it worries me that they change the sound. I’m sure Blackmore doesn’t approve. Will I get it…probably 😂
Thank you, Phil, I had already ordered it but it's not expected here until April and I was curious to hear your opinion of it. Very happy to hear encouragement about the 71 show because I'm also not generally a fan of most audience shows.
Aloha Phil , just to follow up today I received my Machine Head box set , Good Lord I see what you mean , the record remix is incredible !! I'm so glad I bought it , the concert CD's are a great piece of history . Wife at work , playing the album through a Sansui 9090 into my uber rare Technics SB E200 speakers , what a treat . Best Wishes Steve.
I'm hoping someone can do some voodoo magic mixing for 'Burn' as well. I love that one and was never really happy with the mixing of all the extra vocal stuff between Glenn and David. Psyched for this! Thanks for your awesome review! ❤🎸
Hi Phil, great review of a truly classic album. ' But ' I'm not sure if I will jump on this one, a little undecided. Like you say in you review how many versions you have in your collection in both Vinyl and CD formats (Plus Cassette) I have the Album many time, my original LP from 72, then I must have at least 5 or 6 CD versions not including the 40th Anniversary CD Box Set. Then there's the Vinyl, again I have I think half a dozen versions, including a Japanese import, 25th Anniversary double purple vinyl, 2012 version with 7" single, 2018 remaster on purple vinyl, and a couple more. So I have invested in this wonderful Album many time over the years, so I think I will sit on this for a while before making a decision which way to jump, unless it appears at a bargin basement price. But neither the less this truly is a landmark Album in the history of music over the last 50+ years.
Hi Phil, hope your doing well, i'm really looking forward to getting this set, i would also love to see a "In Rock" super deluxe box set as well. and of course i certainly see your Horzu pressing back there on the shelf, i got that same vinyl pressing and treasure it as one of my very favorite imports in my vinyl collection. keep up the great work brother!! \m/ \m/
Amazing in depth review of this classic album Phil! Loved every 36:28 minutes of it , and thank god i ordered the masterpiece once again! ( don't know how many i allready have🤣) Looking so forward to hear the remix from Dweezil Zappa!🤩
I think some of the criticisms are pretty much nit picking. With all that's included plus the reasonable price, the box set is fine as is. I'm really psyched the quad mix is included!I
This was the first album I bought at age twelve since my brother wouldn't let me borrow his copy (he got pissed off at me every time I bought copies of the same albums) and I played it so much that he wouldn't play his for many years after, but this was my introduction to the band and has remained to be one of my all-time top albums. Originally, When a blind man cries wasn't included on my copy of the album in 1972. Still haven't found that APRIL WINE box set from cherry red records either.
The Dudes set was done with a lot more care and detail than this, plus it’s jam packed. This seems like a ‘cash grab’ to me. No way a Machine head deluxe set doesn’t warrant at least a hard back book and decent memorabilia.
Love Deep Purple. Got all the studio albums, a good chunk of live albums, but not all of them. There’s so many. Live DP is a rabbit hole in itself. As of Machine Head, I used to have the old Warner Bros CD, then I got the 1997 remaster two disk edition including the Roger Glover remix... and I’m still running with this one. There’s been so many reissues Of Machine Head, it’s crazy. Gotta admit that box set looks pretty good, but I could do without the vinyl. That other CD boxset you showed, with 5 CDs I think, that would maybe be more of my taste. I’ll look it up.
Absolutely agree Phil. I am sick of people moaning oh I just want cds why didn't they do it in that stand alone cd etc. At the same time some people may not have had in any form for a long time, my take on it
Hello Phil 👋, Thanks for all your nice videos and interesting thoughts on music, especially Rock n roll 🤘. I follow you from France and thanks to you I added some wonderful albums or boxset in my collection 😊. Do you really think it’s a high quality edition ? I have many CD of Deep Purple mostly in deluxe remastered & remixed versions and DP is one of my favorite bands among Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. I want to start a vinyl collection of DP. Thanks for your advices.
Hello Phil 👋, You convinced me to preorder the boxset for starting my Deep Purple vinyl collection, with this monumental album in hard rock history 👌🤘. And it will be a wonderful complement to the deluxe edition of 2012 I already have on CD. Thanks for your exhaustive and interesting description. I’m glad to add this edition to my favorite music collection 😁👍
I must say, I’m am interested in this remix, as Machine Head is my least favourite mix of all of Purples albums. Like you, That laid back, dampened sound never sounded right to me. Hence why Made In Japan has the best versions of the Machine Head tracks. The Smoke On The Water remix impressed me very much. Sounded as if they had updated it, without taking away from the original. I think a younger audience would enjoy these mixes. Great stuff. - Some of the Gillan screams added, I’m sure are from live performances. I’m only going from what I’ve heard from Smoke - Do you think it will be likely that they will release this on CD only at some point? Really glad to hear you like it.
Hey Phil, fantastic overview of this new Machine Head set. Aside from the anniversary CD remasters, I've generally avoided buying further remasters, which is why I didn't get the multi-CD box (which I am now regretting). However I am now really glad I pre-ordered this new set and really look forward to hearing it. The wonderful thing here is the packaging makes it feel like a different release. I grew up with the SQ mix here in Oz. I didn't hear a stereo version until I bought the CD in around 1987. So I was surprised to hear 'different' guitar solos on "Maybe I'm A Leo" & "Lazy", which then finally explained why the latter was played in this way on "Made In Japan". Late last year I acquired an original Australian Stereo pressing of MH. However I was underwhelmed by how flat & lifeless it sound (to my ears) compared to the SQ version. This stereo pressing sounded like the band had a tarpaulin thrown over it or as if they were behind a closed door. Like a band was trying to break free. I'd never noticed till then how wide the sound was on the SQ. Gillan's vocal centred. Its worth getting an Australian SQ version if you can Phil. Love this review mate. Cheers. 👍👍😊
Great in-depth video and review. But unfortunately not what I was hoping you were going to say! Wanted to hear that the new remix didn’t add anything, and that the Glover mix was still the be all and end all. Now I really want to get that on CD, but I don’t particularly need the other stuff. I mean with regards to the surround sound stuff, I have no way of playing it. Hopefully it comes out just as a CD album, as I don’t think it is available that way currently.
Simon's book on Machine Head, co-written with Stephen Clare, has been in the works for years. It's announced to appear in 2024 but I'll believe it when I hold a copy in my hands. There will be a conflict of interest here to simultaneously contribute writings to a Machine Head boxset and trying to finalise you own book. And Simon may not have been asked by the current record company/management. His name has been conspicuously absent from Deep Purple releases for quite a number of years. Which is a pity.
Cheers for info….from getting ‘ Stargazer ‘ off the ground ( one for the teenagers! 😊) to all Simons contributions to the re - issued booklets in Purples catalog…a chance missed, I feel
Nice review. Did you ever review the original 1969 Concerto for Group and the Orchestra live and 1970 Gemini Suite Live? I can't seem to find 'em on your channel.
@@NowSpinningMagazine Thank you for the the reply, Phil. Looking forward to the original 1969 Concerto review. In my personal opinion, it's an under-appreciated piece of music. What about 1970 Gemini Suite Live?) Not that many people, even among Purple fans, know about it. I'm not even sure it's mentioned in any of Deep Purple documentaries. Anyway, thanks for your reviews.
A remix is one thing, but if you put a flanger (?) effect on Blackmore's guitar during the When a blind man cries solo than it's a re-make/re-model ...
Agree so much on boots, I cannot stand poor quality audience or soundboard recordings I've heard hundreds of them on Y tube and there are only 2 I bought, the rest are just appalling, to my ears, more is most certainly less.
Marvellous design! Every Deep Purple release is an exciting event. A quintessential element of my life!

You've sold me. Pictures of Home is my favourite song (if such a thing exists). I'm looking forward to hearing all this "new" music. - outro, intros, screams and everything different to everything else.
"Pictures Of Home" is amazing and I always though that this song in particular had a huge impact on Iron Maiden.
This is why I love music and people who love music. It brought tears to my eyes. Many thanks.
I wasn’t planning to buy this, but one listen to the remix of “Smoke” changed my mind. Ordered it immediately.
Just listened to Smoke On The Water (2024 Remix) and it is incredible! Can't wait to hear the rest of the album.
X, Y and Zed? Never heard that before. Brilliant!
I still have the cassette of Machine Head that I bought in the 1970's ... perhaps its time that I should upgrade it to vinyl or CD 🤣🤣 (the cassette still plays perfectly though!)
Always love your unboxings Phil, great work as always!
Wow, that's a comprehensive review. Thanks, Phil. You have painted a wonderful picture of musical delight, and I can't wait for the new Purple experience. Cheers mate.
Gracias escuchar a alguien que sabe lo que comenta es un placer. Thanks listening to someone who knows what it is talking about Is always a pleasure..
Thanks for covering the 50th anniversary edition. I’m pleased that the remix offers something new for fans.

Brilliant work and great job on this review 🎈🎭🎶‼️⚡️🎉

Didn’t know about this - now ordered it and it arrives on Saturday 😊
Thank you Phil. You sold me of going out there and listen to the those subtle things I haven’t heard before

I’ve just ordered my copy, I love this album.
Thank you Phil. This is as always an awesome and very helpful review. Based on your comment I will get this no matter what! Eager to get this
Aloha Phil , thanks for a great review , I have pre ordered my copy , it's released over here on March 29 , I had the pleasure of seeing Deep Purple at Birmingham Town Hall in the 70's , I met & chatted with Roger Glover at the artist exit , he was very gracious & it was a meeting I'll never forget . I was unsure about getting this Phil! But your enthusiasm and detailed look at it has made me put it on order!
You provide a great insight with releases keep them coming! 👍
Just as I started selling some vinyl..you’ve pulled me back in!!!
Great review
Great review. Roger Glover's remix was a revelation to me when I first heard it. You've got me very intrigued to hear what Dweezil Zappa's mix sounds like...
PHIl !!! I wasn't going to bother with this but your review has made it essential now! Bugger 😂

Dweezil. Come back to Milwaukee please. I love deep purple.
Excellent review Phil. I look forward to checking out this Deep Purple box set 🎸Thank you from Houston 🇺🇸
Excellent video Phil, Thankyou
This was wonderful you have taken me back to my youth in the 70s with thi review . Brilliant, i have to have it.
Great video. Thank you. Fingers crossed for an In Rock remix asap!
Hi Phil. Love the overview! Have heard Smoke..., and Dweezil's brought out some eerie effects that make the song sound even more menacing - in a good way. I hope he gets to do a remix of Who Do We Think We Are? too. That album needs a reappraisal, being between Machine Head and Burn.

Very cool review and honest review. I decided to order mine. Thanks Phil.
🌠Alright Phil..good video ..I'm friends with Dweezil....he's gotta new killer home studio
Wow ! Please share this video with him and say thank you from me. I would love to talk to him on my podcast if possible! Phil :)
I didn’t think it was out yet!! I want it for sure. My favourite album of all time😊

16:30 Blu-Ray includes the US Quad mix (1974). SACD from 2003 is the UK Quad mix (1972). 5.1 mixes are from 2001 DVD-Audio
2:50 "We all came DOWN to Montreux."??? How did they mess that up?
Otherwise, what a fantastic review. Ugh... now I have to buy it.
Thank you for this great and detailed review im going to preorder it thanks phil 👍
Fabulous review, Phil. I have been a Purplehead since "Fireball" and I pretty much get everything. But, due to the price, I was wondering if this is a "Must Have" and you cemented it for me. My pre-order is now In.
I just ordered, not bad price on Amazon Canada 126C$, thanks for amazing review , very enjoyed watching your videos 🤘👍
Great review Phil.
If Dweezil re-mixes House of Blue light, there's one I would buy. Seriously.
Me too !
Brilliant!!!

Flawless!!!
You've got me psyched for my box to get here!!! I cannot wait to hear all of these new nuances that you are mentioning!
Very interesting, great review. Got to check out this release!
Amazing in depth review of this classic album Phil! Loved every 36:28 minutes of it , and thank god i ordered the masterpiece once again! ( don't know how many i allready have🤣) Looking so forward to hear the remix from Dweezil Zappa!🤩
Love your reviews! So detailed, and not only about the technical, physical aspect of the item, but the overall feeling of it. Thanks 🍺🤘!
Nice review, Phil. Looks just as awesome as the Mott The Hoople "All The Young Dudes" box set.
On order already Phil ❤
Thanks Phil, ordering now
Similar to what Pink Floyd did last year with Dark Side of the Moon, I hope the Blu-ray gets a stand-alone release at some point. 🤞
EXELENTE RESEÑA DE MI BANDA FAVORITA DE TODOS LOS TIEMPOS ESTOY ESPERANDO ANSIOSO ESE DISCO!!!
I have this on SACD and it sounds FABULOUS
US Quad mix has never been released on SACD before. Warner Bros made a new 5.1 instead in 2001
Absolutely agree Phil.
I am sick of people moaning oh I just want cds why didn't they do it in that stand alone cd etc.
At the same time some people may not have had in any form for a long time, my take on it
Phil, the 1971 gig you were reaching for is Long Beach me thinks. Great to watch this show.
That’s the one! Thank you 🙏
Hello Phil 👋,
Thanks for all your nice videos and interesting thoughts on music, especially Rock n roll 🤘.
Hello Phil 👋,
You convinced me to preorder the boxset for starting my Deep Purple vinyl collection, with this monumental album in hard rock history 👌🤘. And it will be a wonderful complement to the deluxe edition of 2012 I already have on CD. Thanks for your exhaustive and interesting description. I’m glad to add this edition to my favorite music collection 😁👍
24:37 I've heard it once and I think (what you're describing) cutting and pasting happened with Gillan.
Never owned it, but after this and the fact that it's remixed by Dweezil, I will be now.
Cheers. 👍👍😊
are they going to release the dweezil zappa remix cd as standalone rekease
Hi Phil do you have any idea if Montreaux 71 will get a standalone release 🤔
This is a great channel
Hail Purple
Unlikely at this stage !
Good shout Phil for Simon Robinson adding to the booklet. Seems strange he hasn’t
The Concerto is on my list to do - Phil
Did you check out the Rufus deep purple book ?
Did they do a fire ball deluxe set ..
Not yet, just the 25th Anniversary Edition
Phil They remixed In Concert live ages ago but they only did the 1st side, do you know why they didn't release the 2nd side. Rather strange.
Agree so much on boots, I cannot stand poor quality audience or soundboard recordings I've heard hundreds of them on Y tube and there are only 2 I bought, the rest are just appalling, to my ears, more is most certainly less.
it's not clear to me what version is on the vinyl itself, presumably not the Zappa remix?
The vinyl is the Zappa remix
Now I've got a dilemma, buy now or wait for a breakout vinyl of this plus the new live show?@@NowSpinningMagazine
Phil, what do you think of the new video for smoke? The remix sounds great but it's all a bit Scooby Doo!
MH over Fireball, however, not reaching In Rock at all.
What's the likelihood of a CD-only issue, for those of us who don't need / want vinyl or blu ray?
