    Strange how these new units get stored but the good old class 37 still keeps going. They must 60 years old now.

      Difference is, modern trains in the UK arent built to run properly. 37s and many other classic diesels were built to last which is exactly what they did.

    • @njr_b312
      @njr_b312 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Probably more cos the 37 is just the perfect locomotive (and I say that as someone who doesn't get upset at old stuff being replaced when the time comes). Can go basically anywhere (has among the best RA iirc), it's pretty reliable, and enough were built for spares to be common.

    I really enjoyed this informative footage. Grateful to you for posting it! The cost of storing all those 701's must be astronomical! I should think that by now, our learned friends are laughing all the way to the bank. Ineptitude really doesn't cover it does it. Some of them are approaching 5 years old and have barely ever turned a wheel. If you want to quantify the failure of the private railway, there it is, sitting uselessly in sidings at Long Marston.

    The south west units are slowly entering service i thought. Im surprised that chiltern haven't had the mark 5 sets by now. I can see the 350s migrating to long marston once the long distance 730s enter service.

    • @leeroberts1192
      @leeroberts1192 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Depending on how many 350s it involves I do wonder if SWR would have been better off waiting and grabbing the 350s, converting them to 450s instead of using the 458s. AFAIK 450s and 458s can't be used together, only perhaps to rescue a failed unit.

    I live near Portobello Jct (West Mids) and constantly see brand new units being dragged to Oxley depot then 3-4 hours later being dragged to storage, surely if you have entered into an agreement for new stock the idea is to get it into service asap or am I missing a trick here?

    Interesting sights. If that Class 769 is 769008 (ex-319008), I hope that one gets donated to preservation or becomes a member of the LSL fleet as it was one of the two Class 319's that went through the Channel Tunnel and 319008 was named as "Cheriton" as well. As for the Mk5's. Could they be exported aboard with some Class 60's modified for passenger work? Somewhere like Mexico or Uruguay? Converting a Class 60 to passenger work cannot be anymore absurd than Metra converting the EMD SD70MAC's to SD70MACH's for use on passenger trains in West Chicago. Look up the SD70MACH and see what I mean!

    Like the HST/91 Sets Royal Mail could have bought some of them 397's along with a few 68's took the seats out and replaced the old and worn out 325's and getting more RM Lorries of the roads but they would rather let all these good working units go to waste such a wasted opportunity 🙄🙄 sorry for the rant there 😆

    They are all in storage because the lease companies that claim to own them never paid a penny for them. The taxpayer did!
    Don’t forget the Angel trains etc never ever bought anything as they were formed by ex BR senior managers and got all their stock given to them in the first place.
    Good old Tory we privatised the railway, nope, they gave it all away for free then allowed these companies then charge the operators a lease fee for trains that were already bought and paid for out of the public purse!
    Even the brand new stock that is “bought to lease out” is paid for by the tax payer.
    Hence you get Spanish built stock that Trans Pennine used build in Spain and had major metal fatigue and cracking frames so dangerous they had to be taken out of service.
    The leasing companies aren’t out of pocket as they never bought them in the first place.
    Must be good to have mates in government that gift you hundreds of items of rolling stock then let you charge a fortune to other companies to lease it off you. And people wonder why the railways are a total mess!

There’s a few others that are about to be going into service, and that 458 is there as part of a heavy refurbishment program
