Can't believe you are just discovering the wonderful world of BTS, but welcome aboard. I'm a 77 year old grandma in America who discovered them 4 years ago, and they helped get me through a period of pretty bad depression. They have helped many people get through some hard times, and their fan base consists of all ages. There is no other group before now or in the future who will ever come close to them.
While I do love their upbeat and fun songs, their slower songs with a message are very special to me. I love the fun Baepsae and Mic Drop, especially the Steve Aeoki remix.
But Blue and Gray, Zero O'clock, Truth Untold, Fix You, Your Eyes Tell, and others are especially meaningful to me.
And don't even get me started on their solo work. These guys are a whole universe by themselves. And the fact they are so humble and love their fans and share their deepest feelings with us is another reason we love them so much. It's really impossible to put into words how special they are.

Even as an army, I like to disagree, with some of their tracks like Black swan, yes, but the most well known like butter or dynamite are typical kpop songs. Not saing that is a bad thing, but groups like Stray Kids or Ateez would be better example of non typical kpop group. But I still love bts a lot, just dont want give all the credits to the "favourites".

Their music is diverse, ranging from heart rending ballads (The Truth Untold), to aggressive rap (Ugh), to rock (Danger; Boy In Luv), to uplifting songs for the heart and soul (Magic Shop; Mikrokosmos), to their beautiful, honest fear (Black Swan), to the amazing song NEVER performed live (Louder Than Bombs),to songs celebrating their love for home(Ma City; Paldogangsan/Satoori Rap), and the beautiful song about loss and hope, known simply as "The Queen", and has not been off the Korean charts since it's release in February 2017 (Spring Day). And SO MANY MORE.

BTS does not have a "sound". They jump genres a lot:
"Boy in Luv" does not sound like "Boy with Luv" or "Dionysus". "Airplane" (J-Hope) and "Airplane Pt. 2" are very different. "Black Swan" and "On" are totally different but still on the same album.
BTS is known for their message and concept albums (over multiple albums)
"On" is part of "the Map of the Soul" - Jungian psychological - answering the question "Who am I?"
This is actually the end of the journey:
the "shadow" - the unconsciuos part of us that we even deny to ourself - is pulled into the conscious because only with both we have our "true self" or as close we are going to get. And since the shadow is the part we fear - that keep us up at night - it s a hurtfull but necessary experience.
It is a necessary step to "love yourself" because first you have to "know yourself".
boracity magazine has a "bit of an attitude" but her vid "the "I miss BTS' old sound" excuse" shows of the difference quiet a bit. She also has a "chapter 1" vid that shows all music she could find of BTS before their group "hiatus" - military service is mandatory in SK.
    Thank you for the reaction!
    You nice! Keep going!

Here is some quick info about BTS if you are interested
    1. There are 7 members- 3 rappers (RM, Suga, and J-Hope) and 4 vocalists (Jungkook, V, Jimin, and Jin)
    2. BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan in Korean which translates to Bulletproof boy scouts in English
    3. BTS debuted in June 2013 with their song "No More Dream"- the members ages when they debuted ranged from 15-20, currently their ages range from 26- 31.
    4. They have won hundreds of awards and are the most streamed group on Spotify, they are also the only kpop artist to have been nominated for a Grammy (they have a total of 5 nominations)
    5. BTS are not only successful as a group, but also as soloists. BTS became the first kpop group to have all 7 members sell over a million albums as soloists, have over 1 billion streams on all their solo Spotify profiles, and all have solo songs on the billboard hot 100 chart
    6. BTS is currently fulfilling their mandatory military service in South Korea (all able bodied men in South Korea have to serve in the military for a minimum of 18 months). The oldest member Jin actually gets discharged tomorrow another member (J-Hope) gets discharged in October and the other 5 members will be discharged in June 2025. BTS plan to continue as a group after they are all discharged next year.

This is from their album Map of the Soul: 7, which is honestly a perfect example of how diverse their music styles are. My personal favorite is Black Swan - definitely worth checking out. In that one album you have this, some straight up pop (Boy with Luv), rap (Persona, Shadow, UGH), more chill songs (Make It Right, Zero O’Clock), and even one with a Latin beat (Filter). It’s a really phenomenal album.

BTS is miles beyond KPOP. And I don't intend that as shade against KPOP groups, just that they are very different. They write/compose their own music so they are singing their own words, thoughts and history. This is highly uncommon in KPOP and exactly what Bang PD (their founder/producer) intended. Their dancing/choreography is amazing (check out their dance practices). They consist of 3 rappers and 4 vocalists and you will just have to listen to more of their music to see the extent of their brilliance. And beyond all that, all 7 are intelligent, kind, generous and humble. It is no wonder they have the largest fan base in the world. I truly hope you will enjoy the journey. Thanks for giving them a listen.

BTS is kind of their own thing, to be honest. They actively take part in writing and producing to bring a meaningful message to their music. They have a lot of creative freedom and use it wisely. That's why most of their fans are actually from all ages, genders and horizons - ARMY is extremely varied
They all are multi-talented and extremely hard-working. The deeper you dive into the BTS rabbit hole, the more hooked you will be for sure. You may not like all their music but their personalities are sure to convince you - they are sweethearts
Paradoxically, BTS is the biggest group in the world but at the same time they are outcasts. They defied all the industry's rules and people don't like that. They went through so much bs because they come from a small agency and ended up at the top through hard work and perseverance. As of today, they still are treated really badly in the Korean industry as well as the American industry. But they refuse to bow down or rely on industry support. All this success is because of BTS, ARMY and the help of BigHit (their label)
Btw, Jin (the oldest member) will be discharged from military service tomorrow! He will probably finally make his official solo debut later, like the others. We get all of them back in June 2025 when they'll all get discharged! So you have plenty of time to catch up, haha 💜

UK ARMY here. I got into BTS through the rappers and while BTS are my favourite artists/group of all time, I have found it hard to actually embrace Kpop. BTS have always skirted around the edges of Kpop, never really fitting there or in regular pop. I think it is because you can't really define them, they literally do it all.
I actually grew up on rock/indie/hip hop music but BTS are the GOAT. I also love Coldplay so when they made MY UNIVERSE with BTS I was in heaven. You should check out the video and the short film narrated by Chris Martin.💜

BTS used Carl Jung's analytical psychology to write the lyrics and make the official MV. It talks about accepting our shadows, which are those repressed parts of us. We can only evolve when we truly accept these repressed parts of ourselves. That's why the lyrics say "leave me with my everything" Only when we accept everything that is part of us can we find peace.
By the way, the drums announce. the battle that will be faced... just as it was in the Middle Ages that soldiers were warned to prepare for battle with drums

I'm happy that you enjoy BTS! I don't know if you already have made some research, it's been a month but here is a pesentation of bts
They are a 7 member kpop boy group with for each member a particular position(dance, vocal, rap):
Jhope, main dancer and lead rapper
Jimin, main dancer and main vocal
Jungkook, lead dancer, main vocal and lead(or sub in the lasts years) rapper, visual
    Rm, leader, main rapper
    Jin, lead vocal, visual
    Suga, main rapper, lead dancer
V, visual, lead vocal, lead dancer,sub-rapper
At the start of their career, bts was more of a rap and dance based group because they have very strong rap line(suga,rm,jhope, jungkook) and dance line(jungkook, jhope, jimin,v and now suga) but they have made a tremendous improvement in terms of vocals. At the begining of their career, their agency, bighit entairtainment didn't have a lot of money, but they are now so succesful (because of their hardwork) that hybe, a label with a lot of companies like bighit under, wich exist in majority because of bts, is the 4th wealthiest music label in the world.
    Some of my recommandations :
Best of me, save me, dimple, i'm fine (songs with deep meaning and incredible sample)
Spring day, The queen, a song with a lot of meaning and a tribut for the victims of the Sewol ferry tragedy.
Just one day, I need u, run(soft songs, i love them so much)
And the famous ones: blood sweat and tears, mic drop, idol, dope(iconic), fire(iconic pt2), life goes on, boy with luv, dna, fake love, black swan, boy in luv, danger, war of hormone, no, no more dream(their debut song), run bts, airplane pt 2, we are bulletproof pt2 etc.
Also if you are a newbie in kpop, here are some recommandations of famous songs or very underrated songs(mostly girls groups because i'm a girl group stan except for bts and skz):
    Eye to eye by limelight(underrated)
The boys, mr mr, i got a boy, into the new world by girls generation (popular and incredible)
BEcause, lullaby, daybreak, bica, deja vu, bonvoyage, july 7th, odd eyes and silent night by dreamcatcher(underrated)
Skip skip, zombie by purple kiss(underrapreciated)
    Bye bye by irris(underrated)
Fine, i , invu, better babe, spark, to x. by Taeyeon(so good)
Maybe by Cherry on top(sooooo underrated)
    Eyes, noses lips by taeyeang(classic)
    Either way by Ive(masterpiece)

Their discography is quite large and includes many different genres : pop-rock, edm, latin pop, r&b, hip-hop, etc. If you interested, I suggest you to begin with their first album trilogy (2 cool 4 skool, O!RUL8, 2?, Skool luv affair) and listening to their songs without MV the first time, then looking for the lyrics translated and finally watching the MV if there is one. I know it's tempting to watch the MV first with lyrics but Imo, as an ARMY, it's important to watch the MV on their official channel but you are the one who knows what you want to do !
Or otherwise you can start by listening to a few songs like: Fire, Not today, IDOL, Mic drop, Save me, RUN, I NEED U, Your eyes tell, Film out, Black swan, Attack on bangtan, Danger, No more dream, N.O, Dope, Silver spoon... Almost all their songs are meaningful and sometimes you have to look for explanatory videos to understand the message hidden behind the lyrics or the MV. Sometimes it seems simple and just fun but there is more to discover in depth. For example, for IDOL there are a lot of Korean cultural references that you cannot understand if you are not familiar with Korean culture.
Sorry for writing so much, I don't want to scare you lol. I just love it when people discover BTS and take the time to really experience their art and hard work since 2013!

FYI, BTS is hated by manestream k-pop. The industry owns the media in the country, and use it to try to destroy these boys. They are independent so they have had to fight against extreme opposition to get where they are. Surprisingly, it is still an ongoing battle. This is important context for some of their music.

Everyone has already told you all the important information, but I will give my pieces of friendly advice: you can’t blink or you’ll miss something in a MV (partly joking, but they do 1,000 things in 1 min), if you need to rewind to fully understand what they’re saying no one will judge you. Some of the songs need to be digested fully (and some MV need an explanation video afterwards), so take your time! 💜

The song on is off their Map of The Soul 7 album Released In February 2020This Performance music video is titled ON Kinetic Manifesto Film Come Prima. It was filmed in Los Angeles California USA If I remember correctly in January 2020. BTS And all the backup dancers The UCLA college marching band Los Angeles Church choir A drumline performance unit Travel from California to New York city to perform this exact performance live at the grand central terminal New York city For the tonight show tonight show starring jimmy Fallon! They shut down The terminal in the middle of the night for 4 hours to set up perform it 3 times Break a equipment down and vacate the best performance out of the 3 to air on the show. As I said this is a performance video not the official music video This was the 1st video released of the album by BTS But not but not the 1st video of the album that was Performance video for the song black swan perform by a European Performance video for the song black swan perform by a European contemporary dance troop. As I already mentioned they film this in Los Angeles California they also filmed the official music video for the song on in Los Angeles on a Movie Studio back lot. BTS ON official MV is the other music video. It is also a different type of video from their normal music videos just as this 1 is it is a theatrical style Video like like a short movie. Love me some BTS, but there are so so many groups and solo artists worth listening too that are much lesser known or aren't as high on the kpop lists for new comers just starting to listen to this genre
One thing to keep in mind is that ALOT of the groups have story lines so alot of MVs flow or have hints that give like little easter eggs for upcoming MVs, so with some of these story Arcs you dont have to watch them in order but sometimes it helps tie things together.

Recommendations for other great Korean artists
Female idol group... Mamamoo - Aya
Rock band... The Rose - Back to Me
Male Soloist... DPR Ian - Don’t go Insane
Female Soloist... IU - Love Wins All
All these artists write their own music.
Easiest to think in these terms. K-Pop is an industry . It covers most genres and includes soloists and groups and is a term used mostly in the west to indicate that the artist is from Korea and has music that is popular. In Korea they don't really use the term K-Pop. They call groups like BTS... Idols (or Idol groups).
It is not common for Idol groups to write their own music or be so involved in their art. BTS has broken thru the barriers that come with being called "KPop Idols" and have become "Global Artists" instead. They all compose, write and produce.
That said, they are extremely proud of their country of birth, so being referred to as KPop stars does not bother them.. The reason so many ARMY get upset is that it is usually used in a derogatory manner when people just dismiss BTS as some little KPop boyband. As you will find most (not all) of KPop and western boy/girlgroups are being forced to sing innane lyrics to boppy tunes and no real substance.
You will find that ARMY are music lovers and it is BTS authenticity and dedication to the evolution of their artistry that resonates with so many of us. You will find many of us are rock and metal fans.
BTS have over 300 songs of many different genres, plus their own solo music... you are in for a wild ride.... have fun💜
If you love rock try BTS - Dionysus.
The youtube channel Enjoy BTS More has BTS live performances with correct English subs... they are even better live.

BTS is not really strictly speaking kpop. They are the biggest group in the world sell out stadiums in hours all over the world. They did not make it up through the traditional kpop system. They could not afford to. The tiny company was in danger of closing due to bankruptcy, for most of their early days. They used innovative marketing strategies to get around industry blocks. The success of these meant Kpop has now adopted most of them. However they were very much the down trodden industry outsiders in the begining. All 7 in bunkbeds in one room with barely enough space to get to the beds. In those days most kpop artists were performers of others work. BTS has always participated in the writting and production of their music. The company acting as quality control and final polish. Nearly everything done in house. The 3 youngest were still in school. Jungkook leaving home only about to turn 14 in western age( 15 in korean age as you are 1 year old on the day you are born). BTS has the widest range of genre and the most massive discography in 3 languages. Because all 7 have different musical tastes you will find soul/R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, various genre of pop, EDM, etc, not to mention genre blends such as RAP/ROCK( check J Hope MORE). All 7 members have individual records of solo achievements, as well as a group so that's why they now have about 1,000 awards between them, not all in music. It's only very recently that the company have started making more ties with the western music industry in order to promote younger groups under Hyve who do not have BTS massive fan base that can get them a number 1 hit in the US with zero points for radio play. Lumped in with Kpop and active, BTS represented over 50% of marketing share and 0.3% of Koreas GNP. They are best categorised by the quality of everything they put out be it music or their reality content. They are without doubt the hardest working group and have been together over 11 years. For instance on RMs hiatus before enlisting in the military( all 7 are in right now but Jins due out soon) he produced 2 critically aclaimed albums INDIGO and RPWP( Right Place Wrong Person)

BTS songs to definitely check out if your taste is more towards rock (a short list):
    Dionysus
    Mic drop
    Run BTS
    Danger
    Boy in love
    Run
    Louder than bombs
    Dynamite
Enjoy! It's a deep rabbit hole, but so worth it. 💜
Another kpop band to check out if you like rock would be The Rose. I'd start with Back to Me.
