  • Runners knee firstly doesn't just affect runners. Runner’s knee is a broad term used to describe anterior knee pain that in some cases is called patellofemoral pain syndrome.
Many factors can contribute to the development of this condition:
    Overuse / Load management
Sometimes the term load management can be used to describe this. Basically the bodies tissues are more risk of injury during sharp and sudden increases in load.
    Glut weakness
Glut weakness can cause a rotational force on the femur, this force can contribute to the poor tracking of the patella
    Foot pronation
The greater foot pronation the more movement your foot muscles need to control. The more more chance they will fatigue. This will place a rotational force of the tibia and affect the tracking of the patella.

Hi there, I was wondering if you could recommend some exercises to me to help with my current issues that I've been dealing with for awhile. When I naturally lay or walk my feet go outwards together with my shin but my knees are straight (it's effecting more of my right leg than my left and my right leg is my weak leg) I've noticed that I have limited inward motion of my right foot, I can barely move in inwards as it will hurt if I try force it. I also get a pain in my knee after squatting and if I try do a single leg squat on my right leg, I can barely bend it down whilst my left foot is off the ground as it brings pain to my knee and gives it too much pressure. (I can do single leg squats whilst standing on my left leg fine). Can you recommend any exercises I can do to fix this overtime? I wasn't born with my feet like this, so I think it's due to trainers I used to wear which produced the habit of walking with my feet outwards and I don't stretch often

Thanks for the question Daniel. Unfortunately it is very difficult to picture exactly what you are describing. Without seeing how you move and testing a number of different potential contributing factors it is hard to provide any exercises that I would be confident would assist you. Sorry about this. My best recommendation would be to see a good physio in your area so they can get to the bottom of the cause and give you the right exercises you need.
