  • We take a break from pure analogue machines and take a look at a classic 80's 12 bit drum machine...the Casio RZ-1

    Steve Poindexter actually did say that it was the 'slightly off' sample timing that he liked about it. I had a RZ-1, sampled the sounds to my MPC and gave it away. Then I missed that 'off' timing of the samples. So I offset the bass kick myself to get that real RZ-1 feel! LOL!!!

      the hat groove is sooo sick and heavy and you can not get rid of it. this wierd reverse early shuffle. very nice groove built in ie mpc stylee

    I have one, it cost £400 back in the mid 80s.
    You could do a kind of Depeche Mode, and sample metal clangs and bottle and spoon ting tings!
    You can have 4 very short samples, two samples double the length of the singles and that eye watering 1.6 second on one pad!
    If you EQ, distort etc the sounds, you can get a good sound from it, and even sample a 909/808 etc, but as he says, there is a tiny delay on impact of the buttons.
    The delay is caused by the way it samples. You set it to 'listen' for audio input, and once it detects a certain level, it samples it, but in doing so, you get the 'lead in' delay of a few milliseconds, but then again, the Linn had a similar sloppy timing, but it adds to the feel of certain tracks.
    It's a doddle to work.

    first thing that comes to my mind when I see the RZ-1 is steve poindexter. nice one for sharing the wisdom

    great video, thanks! what do you think they're worth today? I inherited one in wonderful condition and once I sampled all the sounds into my EPS 16+ it's been sitting idle for quite some time while I wait to see some examples pop up on ebay so I know how to price it but no dice... I have an HR-16 as well (which will also be sold soon) and will check out your HR-16 vid next!

    Another main reason for this little thing is the individual outs.

    Sample an 808 snare for instant vintage Todd Terry action! Out of interest how are you syncing the 303?

    • @jonryman
      @jonryman  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      midnightstepper midi...the RZ1 is midi only. midi out from the RZ1 to midi in on a SBX90 sync box. clock 24 out from the SBX syncbox.

    Hi Jon. I just bought a RZ1 and I've noticed that some of the sounds are much quieter than the others when played through the stereo outs for example the Clap and Tom 3. Is this usual / the same on your machine? The RZ1 only arrived today so I will do some experimenting withe the individual outs to my desk to get around the volume differences that way. Thanks for your help in advance! Xan

    It wasn't ever really 'cutting edge' though, even back in the mid 80's a Fairlight was far more advanced, if admittedly ridiculously expensive, although it was 12bit compared to an Emulator 2 which was still only 8bit if my memory serves.

    guess what a modified Sega Megadrive can do sampling better than this ^^ if only i have a midi interface to use it live i can do monstruous sound with this gaming console with some tracker like Defelmask, the FM synth part can be used to in a great way.

    • @jonryman
      @jonryman  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i dont doubt that for a second. nearly all the early putters had very good sampling capabilites. the AMIGA being very cool for that fot the time. the unit in the vid is really at the birth of affordable sampling tech.

      +Tibi Sz no worries. korg have just put out a game changing analogue synth thats sub 500 dollars and in my opinion is the best thing made in the last 20 years. no shit. KORG MONOLOGUE. just amazing. save and buy it.

      +jon ryman - have you played a Minilogue? It was my first synth (from 3 months ago, ha), and I find it to be really noisy in a way that washes it out of mixes, especially if you get anywhere near the onboard delay. I also have a hard time wringing good basses and long pads out of mine. Am I just doing it wrong? Or what would you recommend using them for, ie what do you feel they're good at/not good at? Conversely I can't stop playing with my JP-08, and find my JD-Xi to be far more satisfying in terms of actual musical output.

      Dude, it's really not that great, I know it looks cool as hell........but, I don't know, it isn't often I don't like a drum machine, hell, I even like the RX11, that thing I just didn't like that much

  • @fangettes
    @fangettes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    so when you write a pattern including your sample pads there, can you re-sample stuff and trigger new samples with those old patterns?

    • @jonryman
      @jonryman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Carr thats a negative. its very very very basic. no pitch for example...!

    • @fangettes
      @fangettes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      jon ryman so what heppens to your patterns when you change the samples?

    • @jonryman
      @jonryman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Carr nothing. think of the samples as an add on ...not the main part. the sample bank is pretty useless for drums really.

    • @fangettes
      @fangettes 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      do you have to re-program the samples into your existing saved patterns each time you play said patterns? Could you hypothetically write patterns that are completely comprised of samples and no presets?

    • @jonryman
      @jonryman  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Matthew Carr
      the samples act as any other pad. yes you can write patterns made of just samples and then probably they would be all in time with each other, but not the "main" preset sounds. for some hopeless reason the samples will never be in time with the main kit. hence the need to use non rhythmical elements for the samples ie vox.
