  • In this video we follow a 600 hp Challenger MT875E tractor out in a Western Kentucky field while it applies anhydrous ammonia with a 60ft Blu Jet tool bar. Applying anhydrous ammonia nitrogen fertilizer is the first step in the spring to get the field ready for corn planting. We will climb up in the cab of the tractor see how it operates and watch the anhydrous ammonia tank switched out.

    Interesting, doing anhydrous here in Saskatchewan, we aren’t allowed to be involved with filling tanks due to liability. We aren’t allowed to hook or unhook them either. We pull up with the tractor at the field entrance where the anhydrous supplier will have a truck waiting and hook and unhook the hoses to fill the wagon. Rather than swap the whole wagon.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bigtractorpower that’s even more interesting, as my supplier is my local COOP agro. They have a fleet of semi trucks that are constantly dispatched to local farmers. We apply anhydrous and calculate roughy when we will need a fill, then call dispatch to send a truck at the desired time. We are obligated to take an anhydrous safety course, but the coop prefers we don’t leave the tractor cab at all. The coop’s here put a stop to farmers handling the wagons them selves back in the early 90’s

      Just don't make investments that are inherently so risky that you will go broke and/or bankrupt. Then rely on others to pay your debts. I used to farm too and I bought only machinery that I could pay for either in the year I purchased it or in 2 years and it got the job done too. Corn was in the $1.75-$2.25 range and soybeans were only $5-$6. Had a herd of cattle too. I didn't go broke in fact I paid for my land in about half the loan term and I didn't have to farm 20,000-30,000 acres. Only when I listened to other advise did I have problems with finances. I am now comfortably retired....

    • @switzerblitzer2701
      @switzerblitzer2701 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dirtthunder1638 Yeah, prices still haven't rebounded to where they were before DT put tariffs on the grains and that's been over a year now. Not a smart move by any stretch. Farmer's organizations over the years had the prices up in a relatively good position until the tariffs bombed the markets. China is still going to buy South America's soybeans and other grains because of price competition. Supply and demand still dictates the markets to a high degree. Creating more uses for grains, which is what checkoff funding has done in the past, will help more in the long run than trying to force China to buy a disproportionate amount of production. Besides, a result of the tariff trade war has been that China is now subsidizing their farmers to grow more soybeans. China's leadership is not stupid.....and neither are the American farmers. Another result of the tariffs is an increase in farm bankruptcies. Although some of the problem is with farmers themselves a large share is caused by tariffs but also the lack of foresight by some farmers taking on too much debt in a short period of time. Trying to increase in size too quickly and the lack of financial safeguards and discipline.

      Safety is probably the biggest difference. NH3 will eat you up some. Burn your lungs. Coming out of a tank like that can also freeze you. It is the purest form of Nitrogen you can apply. A LOT of solid fertilizers have chloride contamination in them and that builds up over the years. Not really any real way to deal with it.

    • @3.6roentgen61

      The main difference is that liquid amonia like you see in the video is the least susceptible to runnoff and and what not which is why it's preferred. However in more sandy soils they prefer the pellet form as nh3 requires moisture in the soil to keep from evaporation.

    when and how do they apply the P and K fertilizers? $12/lb for a modern tractor sounds reasonable to me.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The farm applies dry fertilizer to the field after it is harvested in August. They spread fertilizer and lime over the corn stalks and then disk and plant wheat over the corn ground. Wheat is harvested in June and the soybeans are double cropped into the wheat stubble.

      Better traction. Think of it like this, on a wheel, only a small portion of the tire is ever in contact with the ground, vs on tracks the length touching the ground is much longer, there is a video of one of these challengers and a new Holland articulate 4wd pulling twin large cultivators and they go up a hill, the new Holland spins and the challenger acts like nothing's changed haha

      It’s a 1,000 acre field and there are four applicators running in it. It’s faster to tow the wagons to the run out spot rather than drive back to the road to switch. This farms largest field is 2,800 acres. They are set up to move fast and the mid switch is part of that.

      Anhydrous burns are caused by it sucking moisture out your skin, and freezing it, anhydrous literally means without water, so it’ll go to nearest source of water, don’t even remove your clothes just douse yourself down first, because it’ll suck the water out and freezer burn you and rip your skin off with the clothes

    My question is, is there specific equipment that you need every hp of the 600 to do the job where a cheaper 500 hp can not do, meaning does that tractor fill a specific market gap where other makes can not do it more efficiently than a 12 cylinder, or is the tractor so advanced that it is worth the investment to go that big, sorry if it is a stupid question

    • @3.6roentgen61

      Well it depends on the job but usually a 600 hp tractor is able to the same job faster than a 500 how tractor. So if you have a very short time to get a job doesn't the 600 hp tractor it worth the investment.

      The two track Deere’s can’t handle more than 570 without self destructing. Typically a two track 570 will outwork a 620rx because of how much parasitic loss there is getting the power through two drive axles and four track assemblies.
