Thanks! I was lucky - for a while at least - until the conditions changed! I'm sure there's a good shot there when the street lights are on. Might try again next time I'm up that way
Beautiful shots there, especially the final moody pano. It reminded me of so many of my own shoots - especially the many miles travelled and hours, even days, spent trying for particular shots of the night sky only to find the sky did not want to cooperate.
Hi John, nice wee video. Poor boat , ive watched it through the years getting more and more wrecked. The roofs at Caol village are a nice subjct with the Ben towering above. Along the shore on the other side of the burn stacks of drift wood and almost whole trees gets washed up there, and gives lovely leading lines to the Ben. Better luck next time, but your photo are still great.....Alioban ❤
I was there on Thursday 😆 the tide was in, there was a beautiful low mist, but I didn't fancy staying till after sunset. Animal-kind had conspired against me on my way up with a huge stag in the road that I narrowly missed in the dark. Didn't wan to meet him on the way back!
Good effort John! I visited for the first time recently during that dreadful week of flat light and low cloud so my only visible subject was the wreck itself. To see the mountains at all would have been amazing.... love the wide shot and the colour palette of the boat and mountains. Its a location to visit again and many times over I think to get the best out of it.
Thanks! Yeh, I'm sure I'll find myself there again at some point in the near future. I'll probably go with more of an open mind again next time though rather than trying to pre-visualize what I'm going to shoot. It never works out for me!

@JohnMcKennaPhotography I have no idea who first said it. The "popularity bias" of search engines has buried it. The WWW says it started with Gibbons in 2015, but I first heard it in the 1980's.
Enjoyed your video, I too have gone out with a specific image in mind and sometimes I let it get to me when it doesn’t happen Much prefer your option of location first and explore Ps, higher tide and sunset are in sync 13&14 Dec if you plan a re-visit Andy
Thanks Andy! I really dont like working that way as it almost always goes wrong but i knew i was going to be in this area around sunset and i'd never shot sunset there so i gave it a go! I've got another location planned for the 14th but i'll make a point of checking when they coincide before planning my next trip!
Personally, I think you were lucky that the tide was out. It does give different options from the standard shot where the other photographers were. I also think the zoomed in shots, where there's some light on the Ben, were the keepers. I don't think the stream ever adds anything to that viewpoint. Puts me in mind of something James Popsys said in one of his latest videos, that rang a bell with me, as I've been doing the same thing for years but had never encapsulated it so well. He now says he has one rule - 'Context not Complication'', complication includes old logs 😉
I was there back in 2011/12, I wanted more of the Ship and less of Fort William so was on the other side of the Burn in front of you, enjoyed your trip..JK
thanks! Yeh, I was on the other side of the stream last time I shot here but I had a particular shot in mind and it needed to be a bit further back. Has it changed much since 2011? I only started visiting here around 2019/20

Just came across your channel, wonderful images & you made me laugh, “absolutely baltic” so Scottish 😂
haha - Thanks Linda! :)
you were blessed with light, but you are right, you cannot go out with your perfect shot in your mind, you have to take what you are given.
Very true! Lesson learned
John. Absolutely lovely images captured there, most importantly the Ben was clear and no shroud around it.
Lovely light.
Brilliant captures. 👍

Wonder when you'll venture to the wreck in the Holy Loch
Thanks! Which wreck is that? I know of the sugar boat in the Clyde off Greenock but not heard of the Holy Loch wreck! I'll have a search online!
@JohnMcKennaPhotography It can be seen on Google Earth , You can venture out when it's low tide .tho .not within touching distance .
@@colintraveller Thanks I'll go searching right now!
