Syd Barrett is such an interesting artist to me, not so for his crazy life, but for his contribution to Floyd and his solo work. Who knows where Pink Floyd may have gone if he hadnt have gone off the rails???
The opening bit - where Syd & Roger sit down for an interview with Hans Keller was the middle of May 1967 - Syd seems perfectly lucid at this time - which was just a couple of days after the legendary "Games for May" concert was staged - and just a week later PF went into studio to record "See Emily Play" - and they had a guest come see them in studio - a childhood friend of Syd's by the name of David Gilmour - this is where Gilmour was shocked to see "changes in Syd's personality" - he said Barrett did not seem to recognize him - and Gilmour would later say; "I'll go on record as saying, that was when he changed" - things only got worse from there - bizarre, off-putting TV appearances followed in June & July - Barrett did not want the single "See Emily Play" to be released ( it was in mid-June and was a big success ) - but things had gotten so bad by late July the band had to cancel it's schedule for the entire month of August so Syd could "rest" - ( and the debut record was released in the first week of August '67 ). Shows resumed in September and Barrett seemed somewhat improved - but a disastrous U.S. tour came in late October - followed by an even worse package tour of Europe with Hendrix - by Christmas the others had asked Gilmour to join the band at the start of 1968 - initially to back-up for Syd - in case he suddenly decided not to sing or play guitar - after a few shows they stopped picking Syd up for gigs - and by April it was announced he had left the band - so in less than one year - Syd's promising career - which seemed boundless in early '67 - had crashed & burned ..
In all these Syd documentaries., nobody ever says "Autism" which he has every trait of. That even ties into stimming, chaotic behaviour, demand avoidance and insularity. Social difficulties and drug abuse, all traits. “I don't think I'm easy to talk about. I've got a very irregular head. And I'm not anything that you think I am anyway.” ― Syd Barrett
