1959 Elgin 7.5hp Outboard Motor Pond Test

  • Motor purchased at Tomahawk AOMCI meet in 2022 with no spark. Broke end of crankshaft at Tomahawk while removing flywheel. Repaired by grinding the broken end of the crank flat then drilling and tapping for a bolt. I turned a special spacer washer to center the rope sheave and take up the gap under the flywheel from the grinding. All seems to work nicely now.

      This one is pretty nice looking. The starboard side has a few more scratches and some on top, but it's a nice clean one. Really happy to have gotten this one fixed and running. Two more Elgins in the herd to get going. Thanks for watching, Ed!

      Yes, it was definitely a surprise. I have never seen that happen either. I have knocked a lot of flywheels off small engines this way and never had a crank break off. It was only one hit too. Lifting the flywheel woth a small prybar and one whack with a brass hammer on the end. It just broke right off. The flywheel did pop, luckily. It would have been very difficult to remove had it not popped loose with that hit. Thanks for watching!

    Pretty old motor. I'm happy to see it ended up in your hands. If you broke the end of the crankshaft, there is a good chance that someone else would have as well. The difference is you repaired it. There's a good chance someone else would have junked it. Another piece of history saved.

      I'm glad to have gotten it as well. I believe there was an issue with the heat treatment of the end of the crankshaft. I agree, there is a good chance that if someone else had broken it like I did, it wou have ended up in the scrap pile. I'm very fortunate to have been able to save it. I don't know if this crank is the same as the earlier Elgin 7.5s or not. If so, I'd have replaced it as I have a mid 50s parts motor I'd have robbed the crankshaft from. In any case, it is a runner again and I'm glad to have it in my collection. Thanks for watching!

    interesting motor, I see folks selling them or giving them away around here but haven't picked one up yet. It runs great and like the gear shift on the face plate.

      These are typically not highly valued motors, but they are well built and nice running. I also like the face plate shift. They are built by West Bend before Chrysler bought out their outboard division. Like the Chryslers, I find the recoil starter to really be their weak point. If you're gentle with them, they will hold up. Overall nice motors in my opinion. Thanks for watching!

    Cool video i had one of these Elgin motor it was a multi horsepower with the key to adjust between 7 ,12, 25 hp . i only paid $25. for it at a yard sale and never fooled with it finally giving it to my son and he sold it - yeah i can kick myself.

      Thank you! I also have a selectable horsepower Elgin 25. I have not yet gone through it. Hopefully this year I will get to it. I paid a lot more than 25 bucks for mine, but it did some with a nice bronze prop and a remote control box and cables. It's a heavy beast, but should be a nice runner when it's done.       Yes, I am familiar with both models. The economy model was forward/neutral and no twist grip throttle. Might have been a little faster without the full gearshift. Thanks for watching!

    Tuned one of those for a friend it ran well but he complained it seemed weak he was comparing it to a 70's Johnson 9.9 I told him of course it's slower he couldn't understand why so much 🤦‍♂️ it's literally 25% more HP

      Well, it's hard to compare a 7.5hp to a 9.9hp. The 7.5 of the late 1970s era nearest to running anywhere close to 9.9 performance is probably the Chrysler 7.5 loop charged twin cylinder. The early 1980s J/E 7.5 that preceeded the 8hp is also a very good performer, but still not a 9.9. He should have been comparing this to the 50s OMC 7.5. These run pretty strong for a 1950s 7.5hp and are very nice runners. Thanks for watching!

      The threaded end of the crankshaft at the top of the flywheel taper snapped off when I knocked the flywheel loose. There were a total of about 2.5 threads left with a slitly taller tip on one side of the break. I carefully ground the top of that broken end flat with an angle grinder. Once it was flat, it was slightly below the top of the flywheel. I marked and center punched the center of the top of the crank and started a drill point into it with a center drill. From there I tap drilled it for a 1/4-20 amd tapped the hole by hand, VERY carefully. It was a slow go with lots of cutting oil and I still broke a tap (I luckily was able to remove). I needed something to hold the rope sheave centered and take up most of the gap between the top of the sheave on top of the flywheel so I made a piloted spacer washer on the lathe. There is now a grade 5 1/4-20 bolt, lock washer, and my spacer on top of the rope sheave and flywheel holding the whole assembly together. The bolt is torqued to about 45-50 ft-lbs and everything is nice and secure. If I remember, I'll show what the top of the crank when I make the lake run video. Thanks for watching!

      @@donk499 Yes Sir. This is a conventional tapered shaft flywheel like you would see on most any other similar engine. This repair was not an easy one to do with the crankshaft in situ, but it turned out well and should be solid for many years to come. Thanks again!

    Hammers are not appropriate tools for outboards 😊

      Yes, they are. Not only appropriate, but necessary in some instances. A proper flywheel knocker still requires a hammer and most likely would have had the exact same effect on this crankshaft. Jaw-type pullers should never be used to pull a flywheel and these flywheels were not made with tapped holes for pulling the flywheel. 😉
