Being out of your prime will not make it ‘harder’ to sound good. Sure, if we’re talking about actually OLD singers, it’s a different conversation as the muscles get weaker with time, but for someone 30-50 or even 60, it should not be an issue with proper technique. Look at Wendy Moten who’s in her mid 50s and outsings almost everyone from this video with ease lol.

On Celine Dion's part...I remember one of the many times she went on Oprah who asked her how she prepared for...or was it...how she could reach for the high note...Celine explained to a surprised Oprah that it did not always show up and when it doesn't you just work your way around it and (my words here...because this was such a long time ago) try not to look foolish. I remember how funny Oprah replied something like...'yes, I mean, how would I know, I believe everything you say...' laughs from the audience.

It was the 2019 season of the german Version of american idol. Her name is Alicia Awa and she is quite successful now in Germany and she's beautiful. Right before this Performance she couldn't even speak weil like her voice was almost gone but she fight for her place in the competition and went through.
I think Mariah MAYBE used background track on that climax, but I think, when she's done belting, the chesty note after that, was in her chest voice or maybe the note go through her Passagio (mixing position), or maybe she couldn't find her mix or, what you said was true👍 (she ran out of breath)
The nodules thing isn't true. She either doesn't know what a nodule is or has some other type of vocal issue. True nodules are debilitating. Mariah is still capable of sounding great!
For Mariah Carey I think it could be C, her nodules acting up. I've seen some live ones where she can hold a note, but she can't sing the lyrics after cuz her voice would break or crack and she no longer feels confident with her voice making her even more vulnerable to breaking.
