  • Today's walk was in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales National Park and we began the day at Malham. After Passing Janet's Foss we had an awesome scramble up Gordale Scar, we then headed to Malham Tarn and then back down to Malham Cove. It was a fantastic walk and we topped it off by having food and drinks at the Bucks Inn in Malham.

    Hi Dean we did that this year the climb up that waterfall is not for the faint hearted as you came out of the scarr you can climb over the ridge on the right walk along and drop down to the back of the waterfall it is good to see all that water flowing through such a small opening great for a few pics, this is one of my favourite walks great video.

    Yes this is great country - I am 76 years old and I did many of the walks in thees moors when I was younger. I did some caving and The Lyke Wake Walk 3 times. The last time when I was 42 years old. This is wonderful reminder of those times.
    Thank you

    The terrain at 5:52 is very reminiscent of the Burren here in Ireland. I'll be spending a week up there on a solo jaunt soon. Would recommend it for anybody to take a hike there. Well worth the visit!!

    Great video Dean. Me and my wife did the exact same walk a couple of years ago except we had a refusal at Gordale Scar! We had to back track and walk up the adjacent hill and rejoin the path at the top. I went up the same way as you in Feb. 1980 and the waterfall was completely frozen which made for an interesting ascent.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Otterwell thanks for watching Chris, it's a really great route. I can imagine it's very tricky to get up Goredale Scar if the water is frozen, would a be a great sight to see though.

    Hi Dean. Spectacular! What else can i say about this place. Must be one of the wonders of England without a doubt. I can understand the sweet shop anecdote. Nice still peaceful spot for you and Ray there. Yorkshire is awesome...official! I must say Dean you have a photographic memory or something. Always top rate commentary. Loved it. Mark.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Wye Explorer hi Mark, it really is quite a spectacular spot. I agree that it has to be up there with England's greatest natural wonders, I just wish life would allow me to get to more places like this more often. I'm currently working the night shift so I've been getting rather jealous of people's pictures that I've seen from this weekend :-) The spot we chose for lunch was so peaceful and silent, I was amazed at how silent it was. Not a breath of wind and hardly any people around, that's why I love midweek walking. Thanks for watching my friend and I hope you've had a great weekend too. All the best. Dean

    • @WyeExplorer
      @WyeExplorer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dean Read hey there Dean....I could tell that was silent and still. Like you love these places...no effort letting it in. Yeah probably top 10 natural wonders...possibly top 3. I feel you working night. Always knocks you about. A good local mooch yesterday. If you visit the channel look out for Got Him! The Fly Tipper. We found the perpetrator. Any way, all the best. Mark.

    Hi Dean, was lovely following your hike, I love this area. Monica and I did a shortened version of this years ago. Was summertime, so less water coming down the scar (no, we did not scramble up!) but as many people as there are rocks. The solitude you had was pretty nice. "Stellar" :)

    Great video Dean, only just found your video`s in past few days while looking for walks around the Peak District. I`m an aviation historian so for over 25 years visited the aircraft wrecks all over the place for book research. Recently I have taken to walking the hills, canals and reservoirs just to enjoy the scenery and get some exercise. I don`t know what your full time occupation is but you have a great speaking voice, good manner and a knack for being on camera. You could easily fill the shoes of TV `Coast` presenter. Thanks again for the uploads. Keep up the good work! Dave

      +edsloan the Yorkshire 3 Peaks is already in the calendar for April this year :-) I've done Pen-y-ghent while on the Pennine Way but haven't done Whernside etc. My Mrs and her friends want to do the Y3P so I thought I'd tag along. Thanks for watching Ed

    As always a thoroughly enjoyable video Dean! A question, when do you decide that conditions are too wet for filming with the DSLR, I mean how much damp can they cope with before you put it away?...Rgds Nige

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nige Ayers hi Nige, thanks for watching. Since I got the 7D I don't worry as much if its only a bit of drizzle. The camera is weatherproof (not fully waterproof) providing it has a compatible lens fitted with a filter that screws on the end. Thankfully my 17-40mm F/4.0 L is one of the lenses that is water resistant, I had that fitted for this video and the one I use 95% of the time. The microphone is the main thing I worry about, if it's just drizzle then I don't worry but if it starts raining properly I put it in my bag or hide it under my coat for a while :-)

    Malham Cove looks magical Dean! Beautiful! How difficult was the climb of the waterfalls?? It looks quite difficult on your video.

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jon Davies Hi Jon, the climb was a little tricky heading up Gordale Scar as it was pretty wet and I didn't want to break my camera. I think in summer months it would be easier when there is less water flowing down. It's only a short little scramble though and then it is pretty easy after that. Thanks for watching

    Great vid Dean. Did a similar route a few years back so a nice reminder. Never got to do the Gordale scramble though as the kids were a bit young then, very tempted now though. Thanks for sharing. By the way, Was that a Barn owl or Short -eared owl that you saw (opening sequence)

      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stephen Butler hi Stephen, Ray and I thought it was a Barn Owl. we watched him flying around for a while and I was hoping he would fly back over us but that is the closest he came. Hope you manage to fit the scramble in when you return, I want to go back again myself and check out the top waterfall and what it looks like from the other side of the plug hole.... i'm not sure if it's called the plug hole :-)

    Thanks for your video, it is such a beautiful scene! You mentioned that the Gordale scar is a technical climb - do you think an average hiker would be able to climb it or is it only for those who are properly skilled? Many thanks. Natasha

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Natasha Cranston, thanks for watching. Gordale Scar is a nice scramble and it's not too technical. It is only a short little climb up the centre of the waterfall so should be manageable for most people.

    stunning area Dean. myself and my family are looking for a glamping site around that area, we are going to forbidden corner and a visit into leeds over 2 days do you have any suggestions??

    • @DeanRead
      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +acedecs Hi mate, the only camp site I can recommend from personal experience in the southern area is at Gargrave called the "Eshton Road Caravan Park", i'm unable to post a link via the comments section but it should come straight up if you search via google. We stayed there during our Pennine Way walk and it was a nice little site with good, clean facilities.
      We also stayed at Holme Farm at Horton-in-Ribblesdale which is a great location, lovely owner (Chris) but pretty basic. Thirdly we stayed at Bainbridge Ings camp site at Hawes which is excellent and the facilities were great.

    Ha, we were there for the first time last weekend , you had it a bit quieter by the looks of it , i scrambled up the Right Hand Side, in hindsight i think up the middle was probably the easier route, will give that a whiz next time, a few had come at it from the top but don't know as i'd fancy down climbing it, Took the Phantom and flew it up the gully and above the falls if you want a look You have to get one of these to hump with you on your jaunts, burns a few more calories i can tell you but worth it , Great vid as always, catch ya on the next one , Phantom Video link th-cam.com/video/3LVj49rVQuw/w-d-xo.html

      @DeanRead  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrew Linney yeah we did try the right hand side first but the middle was definitely easier and also drier :-) haha. I would like a DJI drone but it's just a matter of saving the pocket money. Thanks for watching Andrew

    • @AndyKdq
      @AndyKdq 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the Phantom 2 Vision Plus, More than happy with it to be fair and wasn't planning to upgrade any time soon but a Phantom 3 Advanced came along from some one i know and couldn't resist lol, Going to Iceland again in April so wanted to get to grip with the new one before i get into 400 foot waterfalls around every corner, I humped the vision up Helvelyn and Blencathra last year as well as various places in Peak, take it and fly the various plane wrecks and remote waterfalls etc, They're the mutts nuts and so easy to fly
