My goodness, this brought back some memories. Although it's 45 years since I last touched a kit, Hurricanes were my obsession back then. I built dozens covering different variants and in scales up to 1:24. No 3D printing then, lots of swapping parts from other kits, judicious carving of scraps and (sometimes) generous use of plastic putty. Never had those reels of wire, just used the old standby of stretched sprue for the aerial. I like the clear parts coming protected in a separate bag--I spent too many hours trying to polish out scratches with toothpaste! All paint was applied by brush--my money never quite ran to an airbrush and Santa never got the message either. Luckily, I was able to pick up some tips on brushwork and paint effects from my father, a Master Painter & Decorator of the old school who was adept at graining and marbling, that could be usefully transferred to model work--even if he could never appreciate why I would want to mar the perfect showroom finish with aging and weathering! I have to say I was rather shocked at the prices of kits; they are a bit outside the 'pocket money' bracket nowadays! I remember having to think carefully about ordering a 3rd party decal sheet for a shilling!
The price of this kit isn't a true representative of all ranges, it is a bit of an expensive outlier. Fortunately many other products are much cheaper (the airfix hurricane 1 retailed for £6.99 recently which is much more affordable)
Whilst the video is not new, the outcome (i.e. your construction of this model) is outstanding and this model has gone onto my list in the hope to emulate your efforts. It does beg to be part of a diorama.
Stunning build given the issues you've had with the kit. I am currently building a Revell Hurricane Mk IIC in 1/72 scale and it's been a challenge to say the least. This has been down to the poor quality of the moulding which I suspect is down to it being an old kit. After seeing your video it has helped me to understand the approach to painting the model in the correct steps so I feel less daunted by the prospect. If my Hurricane looks as good as yours, I'll be very happy indeed. Thank you Matt for a great video.
Great vid! I had a Hurricane back in the late 70‘s from „M@tchbox“ in 1/72. It was easy to build and a pilot and a display stand was included. Considering the exchange rate at this time the price was 2,00 £… Happy new year everyone! 🎉
I’m quite a Hurricane fan and while the issues are off putting you have done a cracking job on the build and finish. I use SMS paints pretty much all the time now as I Dan find anything else (at least in New Zealand), that matches the quality and ease of use. The SMS glue is extremely good, it’s slightly hotter than the Tamiya version and worth checking out. Great vid and have a great new year!

Despite the challenges you had with this build, you still have a very nice-looking Hurricane model. Also, huge props for supporting your local Model Shop. After the lockdowns and now with a global recession; local model shops will be needing all the business they can get. Anyway, keep up the great work Matt.
Good result despite the little issues. 1/72 is probably a bit small to go freehand but may need to reduce the airbrush pressure and get in a lot closer for the edges of the areas and then fill in. For the red on the nose, once the decal has set and been varnished just go over the decal with the red paint. Doesn't have to be right to the edge but that will help. Happy New Year to you!
8:50 the sausages are a great way to get a line that is not too hard. I use this myself but rather than use masking fluid I use an ordinary tissue paper. It's double ply and easily parts to make single ply which is then applied to the sausages. Great job on the Hurricane, easily my favourite aircraft of all time.
FMC seems like a great shop. They usually have good prices and stock. And I think they are the UK distributors for SMS. Frome itself is also quite interesting, one of my uni friends came from there(hi, Paul!). And back in the 90s when I collected trading cards one of my favourite suppliers had a shop, apparently just a few metres away from where FMC is located(hi, Neil!)
Ah so that's the model centre I've been buying from on The auction site! Can't say it's name or yt will delete my comment under new policy! They sent me a thing with SMS paints the other day to my surprise, so now I know they stock SMS and have there E shop account I'll definitely be using again! I have the same rule as you I alway buy something when I'm mine no matter how small! I just can't walk out without anything it doesn't feel right!
Great job on the Hurricane it looks great. I have built a couple of hobby 2000 kits and I enjoy building them but do agree they are bit pricy for what they are
Hobby2000 is company from Poland which packs mostly Hasegawa/Fujimi japanes molds, adds cartograph decals and some painting maskas and their own manual. When it comes to Hurricane there are many decent chocies but they also offer japanese molds that are quite often not available from their original brand
I've never heard of this brand, but criticism apart looks quite good. I'm not an internet shopper, and with so few model outlets on the high streets, I only build available Airfix. But should I come across something else I'd have go. Thanks for a good honest review. 👍👍👍
Good build/kit review video. I'm not a fan of lacquer based paint. I'll stick to my Vallejo acrylics. Glad you could surmount the deficiencies of the kit. I've never built a kit that didn't have a problem....because I build mostly vintage models. Happy New Year!!!! Bill
Great video, good job you have 3d printer for the pitot tube. You have correctly interpreted the exhaust colour. I do have a query for the manufacturer as the squadron I.D. lettering appears to be too large!
I believe that in this particular case the lettering size is accurate - it is one of those not often used oddities but was historically used by the RAF Exeter aircraft
Just seeing this vid' now Matt, I must say you've done a lovely job on this Hurricane one of your best yet, well done! And just subscribed to your channel too!
I really enjoyed watching this, the Hawker Hurricane is one of my favourite aircraft. I've been building my first model a 1/72 airfix Messerschmitt BF109E-3. So far I've lost the shaft for the prop and one of the wing cannons lol. Anyway great video and I look forward to watching more!
Hi Matt, with regards to the decal issue on the nose of your Ian Gleed mk1 Hurricane, I had the exact same problem With my Airfix 1/48 scale Exeter based Hurricane, cartograph decals in that kit too I believe. You did a great job on that 1/72 scale Hurricane. At one point I dropped the gunsite into the fuselage…lol, got it out in the end. Happy new year, subbed
Thanks for letting me know! I have the 1/24 scale Hurricane with the same scheme and did not notice the same issue in that one, but i could be wrong lol
HI Matt, Happy New Year. Thanks for that great build & review. Those SMS paints look quite appealing. Q - With the weathering powders & indeed pastels that you use, do you use anything to 'Fix' them with afterwards?
Can never get blutack to conform enough for 1/72 camp. Specialist masking putty sinks in after a while so you don’t get much bleed through, but you have to be careful peeling off of small parts. Really like the Hobby 2000 range because you get nice, older kits and good decals. The 1/72 Hurricane isn’t the best value as it looks expensive against the Arma Hobbies kit, but the 1/48 one is a really good buy
I always enjoy watching your builds, Matt, but why do you want a soft-edge comouflage on a RAF fighter ? The RAF used linoleum masks they put on the planes when spraying the patterns, so it was hard edged in real.
Yeah, I am aware of the stencil mats they use having done some research recently - I pretty much just wanted to practice using the airbrush really. Fortunately I ended up not having a soft edge in the end lol
I had the same problem with my revell spitfire, lost that antenna thingy on the bottom of the wing... But its unnoticable anyways so i dont think its such a big deal for my first kit.
Hi Matt I was just wondering that seeming it's the end of the year will you do a vid on the best or worst models of 2022 I would really like to see a vid on that subject Also the hurricane looks amazing you did a really good job considering the kit had quite a few issues 👍👍
Hi this is my first comment on your channel. That was a really good build you did there. I'm in total agreement with you about hand painting the interior of the aircraft as after you put the canopy on you will not see the interior of the aircraft at 1/72 scale. And it was good to see that you use the blue tack method for the camouflage as this is my preferred method for when I use my air brush to. Can I make a suggestion about you gluing your canopy to the aircraft! I always use PVA glue to attach the canopy. I can imagine this sounds daft but if you try it you can wait until the glue goes off . It will dry crystal clear then with a damp brush remove the exses. Glue . You will have no fogging on any of your clear parts. One other thing I can point out is I have found that it is always best to mask the rotor tips if you want to add a colour as this makes the rota look absolutely brilliant and highlights the whole model. It's all about the tiny details. Keep up the good work and I hope you didn't mind me calling you out on a few details.
I've used PVA on many previous builds - I simply use clearfix in this one because i had it in my supplies and i kinda need to use it lol. Thanks for watching!
sadly I didn't make a note - but I have a feeling it was the suggested pressure on the bottle - "Our paints are designed for air brush use. We adjust our paint viscosity to ensure that our paints can pass easily through a 0.3 mm sized air brush at 12 to 15 PSI."
I've found using an airbrush or a wet blending method to give reasonably good results - probably worth watching one of my videos on a German aircraft rather than a RAF one if you want to see those methods

Hi Matt. How come you went with the British armour colour SCC7 for the green?
Mostly because when I was in the shop I didn’t realise there was a different one for the RAF version, it looked close enough
I have the Airfix 1/48 version, and the nose cone is red. Was it painted differently at other times, or is that one tha right one?
Most information I can find points to it being red, but as I followed the instructions that hobby2000 provided it is possible they got it wrong
What do you Think is the bedst model the airfix 1/72 spitfire or the 1/72 airfix hurricane?
