OMG! The music factory (under the bridge) for up yer Ronson & Back to Basics, hi Flyers, The gallery. Leeds was the place to be in the 90s. I spoke to many a people who used to come up from London for a night out in Leeds who used to say it was a far superior night out compared to London . Seriously, it was that good, there was no where better back then. It was exciting, glamorous, fun and packed to the rafters with great people everywhere.
My 90s clubbing days in Leeds will stay fondly in my heart forever.

@@carouselcakes6237 We travelled from Scotland to visit Leeds’ clubs. Better than most cities by miles, and we travelled everywhere. Waaay better crowds and atmosphere. Notable others were Shindig in Newcastle and The Sub Club in Glasgow.

Wow just started watching and cannot believe The Music Factory has gone! I moved to Leeds when both B2B and Up Yer Ronson moved into the Pleasure Rooms - crazy venue, and the best DJs in the world (which I'm sure we'll come onto). But many a good night still spent at the Music Factory

Tim forgot to mention why there was big queues down the street on bliss nights , I organised 200 people minimum weekly to go from Harrogate to Leeds to Bliss @ The Gallery which grew massive , Tim used to play a basement club in Harrogate before that , it was the Harrogate crowd that boosted Bliss , when we got there , there was very little lighting or effects , I guaranteed numbers from Harrogate to help boost the Friday nights and Bliss went big, invested in lights and effects , added Steve Luigi as well as other guest visiting djs and the rest is history , you can't do it without the people so don't forget to mention the nobodies who paid the door fee and loyaly attended weekly , even through the times when Manchester had clubs that was tempting many away a certain number of us turned up EVERY week , the best days.

Tim used to dj at the casbah in Harrogate every Friday, 1990. I was there every Friday he was fuckin amazing, I had quite a few of his mix tapes and still have them transferred to my iPod. Then they changed the name to the mix in 1991, still Tim djing those were the best times of my life. Towards the end of 90 we were going to the warehouse, and gallery in 91. And then back to basics a bit later. For me the best night's were in the little club in Harrogate because it was just Tim on the decks and it was a much smaller club. More intimate and special imo ❤

Important part of the story of the Gallery imo as early Bliss days had a load of people coming from Harrogate and Wetherby that were regulars at the Mix. Right up until around 2014 Leeds was still the epicentre of clubbing in the UK and a leading city in Europe. I was playing the scene every weekend juggling residency’s for Speedqueen, Kissdafunk, Crasher, and later Filth, Habit etc and on any given weekend you was spoilt for choice from around 10 decent clubs, Mint, Northern Lights, Warehouse, Rehab, Wire, Mission, Stinkys, Space, Crasher, control, Beaver Worx, Kerbcrawler, of which you could guarantee all had world class headliners week in week out… outside of London there was no city that came close except the Leeds scene was more compact, friendly and the crowd way more up for it. Agents were crying out for their artists to play here. It’s sad that hardly any of the clubs remain. Baffles me to this day how it declined so rapidly but I partly blame its decline on the growth of the student population, student promotors slowly took over the independents with their access to databases and ability to target students direct as soon as they arrived in the city.

I only got into dance when techno/electro came out late 90s, early 2000s. I used to do Berlin, and Geneva, mostly. But, Leeds had a night called Technique based in The Mint Club ran by a guy called Jay Kilka and a few others. The Mint Club had little stools with the seats in the shape of Polo Mints, and yeah, it had a great sound system. The place was run by an older Lady named Val. She was top.
I also liked Alec Bowen at Polar Bear records. Had a great night in the basement of the corn exchange/elemental bar, one time. But the balconies were out of bounds
Leeds is now a very non happening city, sadly. I wasn't too much of a fan of house music, original rave.

Fun times in the late 80's-early 90's. I was the partner of Kirk who ran the Chocolate Factory. We used to give sweets (and other stuff 🤫) out. Great indie tunes, and very psychedelic dance floor. Most of my mates were in bands that played the Duchess. It was sad when it shut down 😞. Personally I found most of the clubs mentioned too commercial. We were into the DIY nights that would just pop up out of the blue. Crazy people and crazy hard tunes, but sooooo much fun! Yes, Leeds was certainly full on in those days. Much like many other cities at the time 🙂

    Fantastic video!
I controlled the overhead lighting system ("disco panel") at Mint Club from 2009 to 2013 (and the original lighting at Mint Warehouse), so right at the tail end of the Leeds club scene's glory years. If you were there at the time, you might remember I had a big afro (which is long gone now, haha).
I'm not originally from Leeds, so there was loads of new information here for me, as well as bringing back some great memories.
The best years, for me, were between 2010 and 2012. Mint Club was really flying; winning awards and gaining loads of recognition around the world. The best times really are a flash in the pan, unfortunately, but we experienced some unforgettable times with the likes of Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos, Loco Dice, Seth Troxler, Kerri Chandler, and my absolute favourite, The Wizard, Jeff Mills. All of those guys are the most chilled, down to earth people, despite their fame. Had some great conversations with some of them during and after their sets.
I still have loads of those old flyers kept in a box and still keep in touch with some of my closest mates from that time who were like family to me!
Luke Pompey (Hi, mate!) said it in his comment: the student promoters are what brought down the proper club nights, and we saw it happening in real time, starting around 2012. It coincided with "clubbing" getting a lot of mainstream attention on reality TV and EDM gaining popularity, along with the popular drugs changing from what fuelled the proper music. We saw those types (people who are there to be seen, rather than to enjoy the music) entering the proper club nights, and the atmosphere changed a lot, quite rapidly.
I'm still really happy to see Mint Warehouse and Mint Festival going strong. I remember getting my hands dirty, setting up the first Mint Festival and Cocoon in the Park and having to go to A&E for a tetanus shot after stepping on a rusty nail that went through my boot!
When I do walk through Leeds City centre, I love spotting some old mates' names still popping up on flyers. Glad to see them still doing their thing!
Shouts and love to the best resident DJs I've ever had the pleasure to hear (plenty of times!) Annie Errez and Bobby O'Donnell for system/Mint, and the Newcastle lads, Simon and Peter (People Get Real), who backed me to release on/represent their label and were always up for a laugh when they came down for Wax:On. ❤️
We knew we were experiencing and being a part of something special back then, but nobody had any idea of just how quickly it would all happen and end.
R.I.P. to all the ones we lost along the way.
Life moves fast, so enjoy and cherish the good times while you can. They might just end up becoming legendary.

There was a photo of me at Kaos in one of those Leeds free papers. Where I looked that high that I might have reached escape velocity. My sister saw it and used to blackmail me by threatening to show our mum it if I didn't do as she asked. She had it stashed away somewhere and if we were arguing, she'd get it out and say "I don't have to remind you of the possible consequences, do I?"
