My character had little analytical capabilitys and thought of everyone as a "mighty warrior" - even a child i found in a forest. He responded to me, that indeed, he was a mighty warrior, but i should not fear. I asked him, to jon me on my adventures, but he then replied, i should watch out for someone older. x)

''There's no way a kobold could murder the king in single combat and usurp the throne of a humon-only kingdom.. Nah our new kobold king was simply elected and is spreading silly rumours to amuse the locals and gain popularity''- says the average citizen then goes about his day.

Do it like me, just build a raising bridge for an entrance and seal the fortress to outsiders. Bridges are indestructible. The safety of the state is paramount, turn your fortress into a dystopia.

Screw the fisher-dwarves, they were meant to save the fort from the were-beasts by sacrificing themselves... Bare the gates until everything dies, even our own men... We can not risk Were-Guinea Pigs getting in, they will be the death of us all. (To be honest, this is really a very dangerous situation in Dwarf Fortress. They may sound cute, but, they easily weigh 3x as much as a dwarf in Were form, move and attack 3x as fast and are incredibly infectious.)

Speaking of coins, someone in the forums mentioned that he was fighting a dragon and was out of weapons. So he started throwing whatever was in his pockets at it and his spare change hit it on the nose and it died. One guy started a debate about "honor" and sounded legitimately mad that people thought the fight was cool and there was a flame war between him and everyone else.

And yet, mastery of this UI, which takes more than a month, feels good. When you are no longer looking at your keybindings to do things. It is so supremely satisfying to have this level of memorization in the UI. Even more satisfying when you don't need a "texture pack" to play, but you use it anyway just because it's pretty and the artwork is nice.
What always crippled me about the game was that any "long lasting" fortress brings your computer to its knees with lag. With individual turns of movement taking 30 whole seconds to process or more. You either lose your fortress early to stupid mistakes or bad luck... or lose it late to crippling lag.
Someday, I want to own a computer that can run Dwarf Fortress beyond 150 Dwarves and a sprawling empire. Where I can modernize the fortress and make it all extremely efficient.
Dwarf Fortress is the benchmark for your PC. Can you get to the Population cap of 200 Dwarves and pull the Sword in the Stone and have less than a 20 second lag between turns. If yes, your PC is amazing.

I play this game. It's awesome. I usually play Adventure Mode and in my current game I started as a dwarf peasant. It's far from my first game so I knew I had to get stronger so I went to a river to swim, which increased my endurance, strength, and toughness. I eventually encountered a dwarf-eating giant alligator, which destroyed the nerves in my left arm. In desperation I threw a stone axe at the monster, destroying it's spine. It was still alive so I strangled the beast to death. That was a while ago. Now my character has legendary toughness, endurance, strength, agility, willpower, kinesthetic ability and spatial sense. In addition my character is now a necromancer and I have a horde of over a hundred undead including a minotaurs, a cyclops and a Titan. Now my character seeks to destroy all goblin and elven civilizations in order to ensure the eternal hegemony of dwarves civilization over the continent my character lives on.
Edit: My horde recently killed the demonic overlord of a goblin civilization. It's first sin was ever posing a threat to dwarf-kind. It's second was siding with the foul goblins, who exist only to torture and defile as shown in the documentary known as Goblin Slayer. It's final sin was that it was a fury, a one-eyed fox demon furry. Its death was suitably embarrassing: punched by a goblin skeleton so hard that it's lower body exploded. Now my character is trying to force it's way out the dark fortress, for my horde's disdain for life aside from my own is such that they would defy my orders. I still have several more goblins and their troll slaves to slay but my character now has a new issue to deal with, more dangerous than any for: remain loyal to dwarven ideals or try to rule the continent.

Normally this would mean the end of our trusty Dwarf... but apparently he used his insides that were dragging behind him as a floaty device. I still can not explain this...
Second story I like to share is less elaborate but always good fun: Turning my Entire Army into vampires by forcing them to drink a vampires well I forced down a well... and blood let him into the water contaminating it.

My miner made an artifact marble table with an image depicting "the mortal wounding of Vucar Inoduthnûr by Gneiss in late winter of 244", which was when my favourite other Miner mined away the floor underneath himself, to then get crushed by said floor (which was made out of gneiss btw). There was blood everywhere and it was horrible and glorious. The miner who made the table held that same pick that accidentally killed his predecessor when he made that table. Oh and his child got murdered by a werezebra and then came back to haunt him so he got incredibly depressed. Making that table saved his life.

I ran an entire fortress on the produce I could harvest from cats. Cat meat, cat fat, cat bones, cat leather, and cat offals. This is why I always buy two cats, male and female, to ensure that if my agricultural project fails to be developed the first or second year I can fall back on eating the cats. Make sure that they're not adopted before you slaughter them!
Yeah, about those damn werebeasts, they're fucking everywhere! My latest fortress fell to the spread of lycanthropy, to be specific it was werehyena disease that spread through my fortress without me ever realizing this till it was too late. The first dwarf to attract the disease was most likely one of my soldiers, who did kill the second werebeast that approached my fortress and died just outside the massive entrance.
The first werebeast was a human wereraccoon, and seeing that the first diseased dwarf turned into a werehyena I can discount him, the first werebeast to attack my fortress, as the progenitor behind this plague. The second and third, and so on, dwarf to turn all turned into the same weretype: the werehyena. To detect this corruption it took me six in-game years and one goblin siege.
The fortress had been semi-stable, few deaths, and a military that made short work of anything. Sadly, I did not have the ability to provide my military dwarves with metal armor, but I did equip them with leather armor, a shield, a spear, and a crossbow each; with 150 bolts shared between ten dwarves. Their skill as soldiers made up for the lacking equipment.
The main issue was the supply of agricultural produce to keep my stills going; my meat industry was kept going with fish, cats, unassorted wildlife, and bovines - yaks mainly. This changed after the fortress gained notoriety with the local goblin fortress after I've exported over 10,000 in value in one go with a distant human city. The goblins attacked and I ordered everyone into the royal dining hall. My military moved to block off the entrance.
As the military and the goblins butchered one another in the long entrance corridor leading to the trading depot of my fortress, my civilian dwarves were brawling for their bearded lives. Several dwarves had turned into werehyenas and were attacking baby dwarves and their parents in a frenzy. This had almost one hundred civilians to throw themselves against the werehyenas. Body parts, offals, teeth, blood, vomit, mangled corpses everywhere, and equipment were pilling up in the dining hall by the second.
The last goblin was torn to pieces by a group of wrestlers, one carrying her child in her arms. I released the civilians from the burrow assigned to the dining hall and replaced the dead soldiers. I had yet to notice the piles of dead in the dining room, which is why I didn't notice another mistake I made when reestablished order to my military. When I noticed the dead werehyenas and dead dwarves I sighed and began going through a list of possible ways of containing the spread of corruption, which I discounted as I saw the extent of unbridled butchery that had spread blood almost throughout my entire fortress. Then my military began to die in their barracks. I paned across my fortress and saw more and more werehyenas dashing down long mountain corridors, ripping into defenseless dwarves, killing cats and other animals. I conceded defeat and retired the fortress.

@j Nice idea. The issue is that it is very difficult to run with. Tantrum spirals and general mayhem is still going to affect them negatively. The lycanthropic curse must be of the same kind or they'll see each other as rivals. When they transform they enter a berserker stance and this means that there is a good chance they'll attack each other despite being cursed with the same lycanthropic curse. They also have a high chance of going stark raving mad, so keeping them happy is beyond just a cute challenge.
They do not need to eat, drink, or sleep; neither do they die of old age. The fact that they do not need to sleep can affect them adversely mentally. More obscure issues will affect your fort negatively that most forget will happen each time a dwarf transforms: they will remove their clothes and any productive activity will drop to zero for days. Once they return to dwarf-form they'll start searching for their clothes. Your military will also be throwing around their gear, except weapons and other handheld items or items slung over their backs or hanging from the side such as quivers, causing them to run around naked every time they transform.
Politically dwarves transforming and attacking other dwarves may cause a loyalty cascade (civil war) and economically this may lead to a major reduction in trade since it is difficult to know exactly when dwarves are going to transform. If your transformed dwarves attack other factions it is almost guaranteed you'll start a war.
Since I'm not very good at this game I tend to avoid this type of challenge.

    • @Teadon86
      @Teadon86 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@j I prefer vampirism, they don't lose their minds at the same rate as lycanthropes. Infecting dwarves with vampirism is also much easier since the vampire is easier to control and, more importantly, to find and isolate. Spreading vampirism can be done by contaminating your water source with their blood.
Whilst they are proficient liers, they hide their true name and all to gain access to your fort, it is still very easy to spot them by looking at their skills, their visual age compared to their actual age, how many children they have, social associations (Friends, groups, factions, etc.), and by observing them breaking against orders. They will give you false information as they ignore orders, such as claiming they're fetching items from a stockpile but they're actually roaming some corridor and moving away from your stockpiles. Therefore, I try to imprison the vampire until I find an opportune moment to use them.
Lycanthropes I'll mob with my military and then I try to find any dwarf that has been bloodied so I can isolate them in a room with drinkables and food until the next full moon. If they transform I'll wall off that room for good if I haven't installed a kill-trap to clear the space of the unholy creature infesting it.

There are only 2 downsides to dwarf fortress:
    1) it will never have a multiplayer option
    2) it is in constant development so expect a lot of bugs, example:
The recent bug makes dwarfs fall into a depression upon seeing a dead body which leads them to throw a fit, also if you retire your fort on adventure and return to it you will have tons of merchants that won’t trade with you because they are stuck as well as dwarfs spawning outside your closed fort because if you leave it open something can kill them
Anyway those are my problems with dwarfs fortress for now, also you said online at the end, no dwarfs fortress is an offline game

Where else would find out that digging too deep without having a proper militia in place, would mean that you get destroyed by a eons old giant blind furry duck with poisoning gas from the depths. I killed my first fort trying to make a cheese bar. I started making a dining room and well ended up pre planning. If you build to small and don't leave room you can't expand. But if you build to big it never gets done. It started well. As i slowly got more and more obsessed in the dining area being grand and amazing and drawing jealousy of foreigners with our fine wines and new idea of a Cheese bar. And as the standards and idea keept increasing the workers needed were higher and higher each year. Until everyone and i mean everyone. Worked to death on it without me even noticing as everything else. dwarves moved and forced to sleep in hallways where "noises" and collapse happened. People falling in lava at the fournasses. The people gradually getting to few food and the cheese being placed with high estimed in a corner of the room with the pesky nobels having first dip. At the very least my guards were apt enough and well taken care of. They were my pride, looking over the workers and stoping any foreing threat or thieves. It was a glorious slow starving fall. We also had a dump pile too. Not the bodies, all chairs and bed forbiden to workers. As they were under the excelent or mastercraft jewl encrusted standards that i set. Thousands of furniture and items that i told them to dump and burn for melting gold rather then supply my people.
And once i reclaimed it tried to actually get food. Till my farms turned into something even better then food. An ancient chimera burst in killing nearly all till we baited it in the "zoo" farms. And that was the second fall.
A game of glorious stories. Just understand the minimum and laugh confused at how you died. And if you get good enough imagine dumb towns. Like a water town were all dwarves have water up to their waist and erect it as a temple. If you ever get invaded you flush the whole temple as levels by level the water rises until the bottom and everything gets crushed by the atom smasher or into a spikey torturous maze.
One last fun advice. Become necromancer adventure mode. Its near useless trick... Well more like a rod of wonders in dnd for the effect. You go were you want with 100 or so dead, tiny chimp, birds, fish or whatever you can find. Keep it in your bag. Ressurect on your square. Instant chaos and horror. And no one blames you for it. They hate the undead your fine.

I commented this on Sseth's video as well, but I will say it again here.
The reason why the coins didn't work is because of the way Dwarf Fortress handles physics. Blunt weapons are more effective the less surface area they have, and as most items that aren't sharp fall under that category, the smaller they are the more devastating they become, especially when thrown at high speeds.
Basically, Dwarf Fortress doesn't consider the shape of an object when calculating how much damage it would do, only the mass. So, a coin is basically identical in all but name... To a bullet. The protection didn't work because blunt objects work _extremely well_ against armor.
Before Tarn patched it, this actually resulted in ridiculous scenarios where throwing weapons we're so OP that one person managed to kill a Bronze Colossus by throwing a Fluffy Wambler at it. Bronze Colossus is exactly what it sounds like, a big angry bronze statue, and a Fluffy Wambler is a magical creature that is basically a ball made out of fur that lacks organs and is completely composed of purple blubber. Before the patch, you could kill the scariest enemies in the game with nothing more than a rock and good aim.

It’s the grade of impact you can have on others or the world. But that’s complicated, when you want a product that have a controlled experience or the same experience for everyone. You have to trust the people to make it fun by themselves in a economy system that is build on reliable processes. You can’t predict where your product will go. The level of flexibility is not given in a triple A company. I think we will need 1-2 more generations of technological progress to make it cheap to produce such worlds. With lower cost comes lower risk and more investment.
