    Dang, i have a problem with the thumb flick. I thought it was an ugly release. I keep on changing my shot mechanics. I was very conscious in my shooting to the point that i prefer to pass than to shoot. But since player like kyrie and curry have thumb flick then maybe i need to accept it. I wish i could eliminate the feeling of being conscious will shooting. This video is 🔥

    What I wonder after all the years of trying to break down my shot and fixing its flaws, is if the old "fundamentally sound" form that so many coaches teach is even a sound concept in the first place. Sure, it will show results when you are perfectly set without variables, but the higher the level of the game, the scarcer that gets to come around.
    With all the force required to get the ball to the basket at deep, the error margin for the accuracy in our form is pretty ridiculous. Its like trying to push down a long spring that is standing on a table without making it bend, EXCEPT the table is moving around. If you could put just one extra finger on the side of the spring, despite it being still difficult, it makes a world of a difference.
    Since around 2001~02, ive stuck with the other extreme end with my shot which is taking the guide hand clean off before the arm starts extending. The years got me to a certain consistency, but it really isn't the way lol

    Been playing basketball for many years but never heard of the term "thumb flick"! I just knew that some of my shots seemed to have more power, behind the three, despite not feeling like one-motion with the leg assist. I always thought the 5 fingers of the "guide -hand" was exactly that - to guide. But now I see it can be to guide _and_ assist power! Thank you and subscribed!

    Agreed, unnecessary motion generally isn't good for shooting, but if it's already ingrained in a person's muscle memory there's no reason to undo it (in this case). The more important things are consistency and stability

    Forget about the thumb flick. If you get used to playing so much, you won't feel it anymore. What you need to focus on are the three fingers they are using when releasing the ball. The ring, middle, and the index fingers. If you can consistently use those 3, being the middle finger to last touch the ball, and you snap your wrist, I can assure you 100% your shot will have power and it will be accurate.

  • @macalloway1

    I think the thumbflick helps smaller players not just with added power and directional control it also allows players with smaller hands to control the ball better. When you are getting the ball to your set spot while making a quick movement to gather or fade away having both hands involved in the motion allows you to keep the ball under control during you shooting motion. If you have small hands that a tremendous help

    I speak from experience, I actively have a thumbflick in my shot, I recommend for others who have thumbflick is to try your best not to push the ball either left or right, see steph, he actually pushes the ball with minimal sideways force. A quick tip is, to shift your offhand slightly inside AS you flick your thumb, and crossing your arm a little during your follow-through could also help

    As Coach Calipari said “You will never become a consistent shooter.” I used to thumb flick. I did not even know I did when I was thumb flicking. My whole High school freshman season shown very inconsistent shooting from 3. Preseason I was shooting 3s fine and clean. But when it came to a little slack after winter break and into regular season, I started the thumb flick in my shot and I didn’t become a 3 point shooter at all after that. During this offseason I was able to work on my shot and break it down, after learning how to live without the thumb flick my shot felt way easier and better. I knocked down 3s and even improved my already solid mid game. Personally, I believe that thumb flicks are only applicable to NBA players. Since high school courts are not the same size as NBA courts, thumb flicking causes more power to the shot than it needs. Also put in the fact that most players who do thumb flick may not have enough experience to become consistent thumb flick shooters like Kyrie or Curry. I would say if you are under 5”4 in high school and not the strongest player, then yes I agree with your video and say you should. But in my opinion, thumb flicks do not make your shot the easiest. (unless you have the time to practice like NBA players)

      haha it depends man, I went from no thumb flick and then shoot with thumb flick and went back to no thumb flick lol, I tried to shoot with either way and i like my shot without a thumb flick so I just spent like 2 weeks just to get rid of my thumb flick, and my shot actually became more accurate and I can shoot consistently, but one of my teammate on my team and his thumb flick looks very similar with kyrie's and he scored more than 20 points almost every single game with at least 5 3 pointers. So just don't add a thumb flick into your shot if you didn't have it before, and if it happened naturally then just shoot with a thumb flick lol.

I have grown up using a Reggie Miller thumb flick style then easily adopted the new era Stephen Curry's thumb flick and early release to improve my distance & quick release. Keep up the good job. Hopefully you can come up with systematic approach with inside shots like reverse lay-ups, using the board, tear-drop and all kinds of inside shots. Thanks coach! 😊

    Great video! However, I don't believe the thumb flick is to generate power. Rather, I think it is habit players use to maintain control of the ball throughout the release. In otherwards, it is a way to introduce the off hand into the shot while still keeping most of the control in the dominant hand. Please let me know what you guys think.

      Hmm I see what you're saying but I play varsity as a combo guard pg/sg and for me I find it more comfortable to have my non dominant hand releasing from the ball right before my release (like a klay thompson release) when shooting from deep. What do you mean taking pressure off off long range shots?

    • @tjgrafiks
      @tjgrafiks 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      bonkers donkers i think it also comes from shooting two handed when younger and as we shift to one hand, we still keep contact like u said to help align the shot. I'm right handed, but my two handed shot as a kid developed into a left handed shot and by the time i was 15-16 i was shooting with either hand. my left was/is more accurate and quicker release (pull up jumpers off the dribble or catch and shoot), my right i can shoot better from deep and more controlled shots like floaters, but i have no thumb flick on either hand now from countless hours of practicing one handed shots from a set position and off the dribble.

  • @triggeredtrey

    I have two types of shot, early release one motion, and late release two motion, i use thumb flick in both but I have better success in hitting early release one motion. (I only usually do late release two motion when fading away or when heavily contested)

  • @tristanwarsal8397
    @tristanwarsal8397 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    After injury my foot via forcing me to shoot off of weird angles to get more power, I somehow solidified the usage of the thumb flick. Two things I noticed A) I can consistently hit outside shots more, with that my shots swing or miss no close calls no nothing its either on the money or its off, like way off and secondly B) The positioning of my feet, normally as a right handed shooter, I would have my right leg forward but with the thumb flick my left leg now automatically places itself in front of my right leg to give my thumb flick extra support lol.

  • @ASH7388
    @ASH7388 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    the best thumb flick example is actually Ray Allen! It helps him get his shots up super quickly.
    i think apart from generating power for the shot, the thumb flick is also an effect from holding onto the ball very tightly before the shot.

    I would advise to only keep thumb flick if it doesn't disturb the rotation of the ball when you shoot like kyrie and curry and if it does you should either find a way that it doesn't or get rid of it .also there is no reason you shouldn't be hitting the rim from the 3 pt line with flick alone no matter how short you are im 5'8 and can hit the rim from almost half court everytime with my regular shooting form if you can't its probably a problem with your stance/ base Mabye you should add a tilt in your stance which will take pressure off of your shoulder allowing you to raise it higher. It will give you more arch while also allowing for your body to fully align with the rim or you should experiment with the height of your jump or the bigger and most likely reason you usually aren't hitting the rim is because you don't have enough arch on your shot a big indicator of this is when you shoot hold your form up if your elbow is not at least eye level you should raise your arch .statistically a higher arch has a higher chance of making it. Also you should avoid flat shooting which is shooting at rim level you will most likely miss , hit the front rim or airball and if you do make it it's most likely not gonna be a swish like you probably want

  • @michaelwayneterry
    @michaelwayneterry 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    After trying the "thumb flick" it seems clear the main advantage of that thumb positioning is better and quicker placement and control of the ball into the shooting pocket, particularly when gathering with the right hand. I've always been a really good shooter, but I'm also always looking to catch up with Curry. Now that I've tried that thumb placement, it does making gathering and release slightly more quick and sure.
    Perhaps over time one would learn to use the thumb to flick for a few inches of extra force, but I just can't see any way an extra thumb's worth of power is giving you any distance. The vast majority of my force is generated from the legs, glutes, and shooting side lats.

    • @OnlyFloor
      @OnlyFloor 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You basically proved his point Michael. Kyrie doesn't really use his legs like you pointed out about yourself; he indicated that majority of Kyrie's power comes from his thumb flick.

    Okay so I used to shoot with a thumb flick but it was a clean one like currys and jrs. I was an inconsistent shooter cuase I feel like I just focused to much on my mechanics. I got sick of it and desided to forget mechanics and just shoot. My shooting absalutly sky rocketed and after 4 months of the best shooting of my life I desided to tape myself and see how my form looked. Turns out by not thinking and just shooting I no longer shot with a thumb flick and it just gradually went away when I stopped thinking about it.
    I'm not saying that thumbing is a bad thing I'm just saying don't think so much about your mechanics and just shoot. Like me your shot should develop on its own. I'd focus more and the fact that you have a clean follow threw and a smooth one motion shot.
    Hope this helps.

And the part where you said that forgetting the shot mechanics and just shoot is that people get nervous and while shooting when they are nervous one small factor could mess up maybe for example, the ball could slip from your shooting hand.

    If the off-hand thumb is not in contact with the ball while the shooting hand is still moving the ball, the energy (and trajectory) that the ball has for flight is totally controlled by your shooting hand. The shooting hand MAYBE gets to use less energy. No big deal.
    There's no way the off-hand thumb makes the shot go farther -- unless the off-hand thumb and your final shooting hand finger(s) are all pushing on and release the ball at the same time.
    The definite downside: several more shot components for you to screw up.
    Simplify your shot.
    Practice with your shooting hand only -- do not touch the ball with your off hand.
    Then incorporate your off hand 'gantry arm' into the launch of your rockets.
    The off hand's role is to get the ball into position for your shooting hand to shoot the ball.
    UNLESS you want to use a 'two-handed' set shot that is really a 'one hand and a thumb' shot.

      Imo this is not a good tip. You shouldn't practice with ONLY one hand as this is NEVER the shot you are making. Since EVERY normal game shot is supported by "guiding" hand. You essentially just training a hand position that is invalid at your shot by doing this. Other valid point to consider is when your comfortable posture is with an elbow a little to the outside not like in a classic "textbook" jumpshot. Because of this thumb flick you might still stay in this comfortable position and compensate the ball going to your off-hand side. Plus repetition and "feel" of the shot, being confindent and comfortable with it in many cases compensate the "incorrectneses" of your shot. That's why there are so many styles of shooting a ball. We've got diffierent arm,hand sizes, heights, shoulder widths and many other variables just in our bodies not mentioning the habbits and styles that I think there is no such a thing as perfect form.

    Is the extra power from the thumb flick worth it? Do I want to rely on a guy to take a fadeaway three pointer to win games for me? Why not get really good at taking hook shots from beyond the arc also?
    I would rather rely on good passing, good movement, and simple, easy shots than an extremely talented player who takes complicated shots. The guys who are great at taking crazy shots get a lot of attention but usually don't win games.

    Hyperarch from Chong Xie is the ultimate guide. All those Thumb flick, Palm shooting, Valgus knees....whatever ... All of that doesn't hurt your shot cus the main point is the power from your feet. Period.

  • @imyjimmy

    i really don't think the thumb flick is about adding power. rather, it might be about improving accuracy in terms of straight shooting. a tiny change in how you release the ball from the shooting hand might matter in terms of the ball veering left vs right, and the thumb might help dampen that effect.

    Bro, if u shot without thumb flick, don't try integrating it with your regular shot, it'll fuck ur shot up. If you have thumb flick already, then props to you, keep doing it. But there's no need to add it to your shot if you are already comfortable with ur current form.

      Curry has a genetic advantage and that can't be taught. Curry has also been shooting "Orthodox" (like Clay) since he was like 8 i think. Learn the basics first! What you are seeing is a world class athletes personal touch in his shot. Again "thumb filck" has nothing nothing to with the shooting hand. I won't troll you anymore and I wish you well

    your video really got me thinking.... and i dont agree with your conclusions, although i think there is something here, that needs to be examined
    but causation doesnt mean corrolation. you have to be careful with that
    but i think you would make an excellent coach one day, its a great sign, when players are thinking on theory, especially after only 3 yrs of playing. i wonder what kind of in drill pct and in game made 3pfg the guys in the comments section have before after this - and how many guys end up shooting with almost 2 hands for the power....
    i too have and had the thumb flick. i can kind of think it away, but my shot is pretty clean already, and as u can see a lot of the pros have it too. so i never bothered to get rid of it.
