If I'm not mistaken, people initially assumed Sumeru would have more Indian/South Asian influences due to the Indian terminology that was used, like "Kusanali" and "Purana", until we got more crumbs of the Persian-inspired stuff like Sabzeruz. Since the subcontinent has a mix of light and dark skinned people, they were expecting some dark skinned playable characters to be included in Sumeru's roster. Same with Natlan, people thought there would be actual black characters because of the African inspirations for some of the region's lore. (The primary inspiration seems to be more Mesoamerican, and the lineup does reflect that for the most part) Personally I just think if you're gonna pull from a people's culture, at least respect those people. It's really not that hard

You can respect a culture in a game with a whole bunch of references to it while not having the playable characters completely match the culture (also, there's plenty people living in these areas nowadays that are not of color). At the end of the day, Hoyo needs to make characters that will sell, and truth be told, characters of color will never sell as well as those not, especially in China which is the only area they care about for it. People need to take off their tinfoil hats and racism goggles and see things for what they really are.
