It was awesome living opposite the Waikino tavern in the late 70's, we would explore Karangahake mineshafts after school and never had problems with any restrictions to access, even using old steel cables to cross the side rivers high up the cliffs, and finding explosives for more fun 😁
Interesting, didn't know that loop track was closed. We did it a 10 years or so back with the children. The pump house was interesting (although you could only go some of the way into it). The children loved the tunnels and track etc, and we didn't have any concerns safety wise.
Damn Aaron! Its so cool looking at your video after such a long time. Brings me back right into the moment meeting you, thinking i was doomed because there is some security dude wandering around :D One day we will meet again in an abandoned place, i´m sure ^^
The end of the right hand side track where it crosses the river theres a blocked off tunnel we used to go in, has a massive old gantry crane about 60 mtrs into the mountain. If was fallen when we were school kids about 95 my friend and i were going to absail thru the rubble and drop down to the sharfts below. We did alot of abseiling around the gorge with both waihi collage and on our own as mates. Chur to the Rae family waihis/waikinos finest❤
Thanks for the info mate, wish I could've grown up in a place like this. I plan on visiting this area a bunch more in future so will see if I can find it!
@Aaron.Montrose good luck man ,coincidently the same mate I climbed with repelled into the main pit of the mine in waihi with another mate at night the video was pretty funny, aswell check out union hill and black hill which is the hills the conveyor belt runs thru from the Pitt in town to where they process the ore. Those two hills have a few shafts and tunnels aswell the union hill is the site of an old cyanide factory there's a walking track thru part of it now ,,,,,so much stuff in waihi and thames and coromandel✌️
Would there still be small bits of gold in tailings or in the corners/veins etc that the standard mining co said nope too much effort, but a solo person could potentially find. Understanding it's not legal of course.
Thanks man - will post our recent adventures soon! Maybe try toss a rope over the rusty tracks higher up, but very dodgy... Also that first level above is just a short intermediate I think, the one at the top is the proper next level.
Wow I was in the pump house35 years ago and it wasn't filled in and there was no guard rails around it. We were tempted to abseiling down it but didn't have our climbing gear

Just did the windows walk last weekend, this video answers my questions as to what's beyond the barriers.
