I just did this same job yesterday. I watched some videos just incase there might be something I forgot. One video showed me how to replace this without draining the entire tank. I am glad I watched it as the tank did not want to drain because of to much calcium build up. As long as nobody opens a faucet in the house it is very easy. Just like you did shout off the water to the tank, put a bucket under the drain and open it up. Some water will come out but then it will almost stop. There will be a vacuum in the take and you will be able to take off the valve and only loose about a half a cup of water. It was so easy I though some would have to go wrong but it did no, even though it was Fri. the 13th. The whole thing took about 30 min.
This was Great really appreciate the step by step instruction. Very informative about the gas & water lines, also about purpose leak detector and pipe sealant. My son & I got our unit back up and running🙃
Thank you so much for your detailed instructions! I was able to change out old broken thermostat to a new one. I changed out my honeywell with a resideo brand. Same specs, different brand. I'm an electrician so plumbing isn't my strong point, but I do find lots of similarities. Your video still helps out till today, thankyou again!
For this very reason is why I always install a water shut off on both the cold and the hot pipes. Having two water shut offs isolate the water heater from the rest of the house so you can still use water through out the house while doing maintenance on the water heater. It is helpful when you drain the sediments out of the heater once per year. Speaking of sediments, check the anode rod for deterioration every other year. This is one cause of sediments. If you wait too long to replace the anode rod, you might not be able to replace it and the water heater will soon fail. A build up of sediments is one cause of high temperature failure. Your water heater is slow to drain due to a build up of sediments and thus tripping the high limit sensor which makes the whole gas control valve fail.
Awesome video. I appreciate all the little details like what you might have to wiggle, what should plumbers tape, etc. It helped me change mine out with confidence
Nice video and very good explanation. The only missing component that was not shown is a sediment trap/drip leg. Could that be the reason your gas valve needed to be replaced?
Amazing video! Thank you so much for taking the time to give detailed instructions! Is the 1/2" nipple to compression fitting 16:42 , is that a standard piece I can buy at Home Depot?
Great video and very informative....I'm looking for a burner assembly for a 40 gallon Reliance water heater m# 640 gort 300... I just replaced the old control valve wv8840b1109 with a WT8840B1000 control ... any ideas?
Replaced mine after same type of leak follow a hard multi-day freeze down in Dallas. I cannot get the status light to blink and therefore cannot get pilot to light. Any guidance would be great.
NO battery, It has an internal element (called Thermopile ) at the burner that catches the heat from the pilot flame and that heat generates a low voltage that feeds that light in the gas valve. Watch this video and it explains it well th-cam.com/video/1VIvEqVbt14/w-d-xo.html
the shot with the water coming out of the Honeywell box? there is nothing connected to the water, the pilot light, thermocoupler and the pilot spark. nat gas enters the honeywell. I think you may have water in your nat gas?
ida flooded my basement about 6 inches now I have no hot water and can't get the pilot to spark a light...I pulled the burner out and dried it off and been a day and still won't spark. what should be my next step..let it dry out more?
SO QUESTION: THIS STATUS LIGHT BLINK EVERY THIRD SECOND, THAT RELECTS THERMOPILE ERROR ACCORDING TO CHARD PROVIDED ABOVE,, ARE THESE TWO ISSUES, ARE INTERRELATED , OR THAT LEAKAGE CAUSIN THIS MALFUNCTION?
My gas line connector(the adaptor between the gas hose and valve) was very tight due to pipe dope in the thread. I tried to unscrew it with force and broke the old gas valve where it connects to the water heater. Now I have to drill out the remainder of the connection. Don’t be like me and just go to Lowe’s and buy a new gas line connection to replace the one stick to the valve. Save yourself a big headache.
I see two problems with your heater installation. Your flex gas line if legal in your jurisdiction should connect to the top of a tee with a drip leg on the bottom of the tee and you flex line should not have a dip in it that goes below the gas inlet. Your water supply lines are also a problem. The flex connectors you use have plastic inside that stainless steal mesh. You should not have anything that will melt within 18" of the top of the tank and keep 6" away from the flue
This could be the wrong pipe dope , The pipe dope must be approved for Natural gas and Propane ;A home owner replaced a gas valve on his furnace , The house blew up ,and there were casualties in Ontario Canada , Law suits occurred , HVAC suppliers no longer sell to the public , Only to licensed contractors in Canada .

Pros never drain the tank. Wastes to much time...
Thank you so much! We followed every step of your instruction and got our unit back up and running.
Start to finish was 1hr. Thanks for the video. My control module came faulty straight out of the box on a brand new water heater.
The best instructional video in the entire youtube. Thank you.
I’m and Hvac/t technician I changed one out for the first time by my self pretty easy common sense

Very nice tutorial. It seems the flex pipe is one-time usage.
Very well explained and easy to understand how to change it out
These valves don’t last very long eather, pretty cheap unit 😢😢😢
amazing video and extremely detailed with a good reason. Thanks for saving me hundreds of dollars

Good job man. Simple and informative.
You’re welcome! Thank you for the kind comment!👍😎
There's a nipple in between the gas valve and the a coupling that feeds into the gas shutoff valve. The flex gas line looks so much easier
I use a spray bottle and dawn dish soap and little water
Works great

Thank you, my vent was partially plugged reducing the pilot flames ability to light the furnace.
Replacing those does it have to be the same exact thing serial number and everything or they all serve the same cause ?
Muy interesante información 👍❤️❤️
Does it matter if the model number is different from the the old control valve?
very good vid. thank you.

Late response but in case others are wondering - yeah. I found a lot at Lowe’s

Hello!
Does that small box uses a type of batery? For the green or red light to flash or be on.
Very nice … gracias!
thank you, it helped me a lot
My water heater was bought in 2016 I get no status light on my water heater. Rheem recommended to ship me the gas value replacement.
Nice!
Thanks!
Great video came in to use
I need the guy to fix the guy on the guy
how long do you fill the tank for? Also, how long do you run the hot water in the sink?
That drain valve is a ¼ turn open, closed. I did same thing
the shot with the water coming out of the Honeywell box?
there is nothing connected to the water, the pilot light, thermocoupler and the pilot spark.
nat gas enters the honeywell.
I think you may have water in your nat gas?
There’s a probe on the back of the “box” that penetrates the tank.

Control box is most likely shot. Just finished replacing one in the Bronx. Control box was submerged.
@@JOENUPE i only had about 6 to 7 inches..idont think it reached the control box..the burner area was soaked as I pulled it out though
@@hopeforthefuturesg no worries….did you remove the bottom plate and check for spark?

What does 7 blinks mean?
Michael Finnegan 7 blinks of red light
According to chart provided
if it blinks once every 3 seconds then that means its working as normal. now if it blinks more than once, look at your guide.
@@michaelfinnegan4348 7 blinks means gas valve bad. Replace with new unit.
how to switch from natural gas tp propane

Unless not required by your state (which is unlikely), installing a gas valve with out a sediment trap is not up to code.
Take a shot everytime he says this guy
the problem to start with was most likely the pilot tube connector was not tight enough and gas was leaking

Yeah that's the problem with these diy'ers. I'm always correcting their work too.
Temperature can be increased by removing knob
That's why I always install a ball valve on the hot side so I get no back feed
valve was stuck...tapped it around its case and boom! lit up. 25 years old! pilot was lit. so, not the thermocouple.

I have to do this. Pretty nervous
I would recommend having professional come out and do it for you.
@@checkitout2468 I think my friend and I can do it but I'd rather have someone come out and do it which is what I'm probably going to do
I just had this same water leak. These valves are nothing but trouble, garbage.
Had to Fast forward the whole video Keep repeating the same things. To long for no reason
