Hard lessons I've learnt from running my business 1. There are times you'll have major sales and there are those days you'll kula dry spell and just cry. 2. DON'T mix the business' money and your money (chest pains). How I nowadays do it ;1/3 of the profit goes back to the business, 1/3 goes to savings and 1/3 goes to personal expenses (bills, e.t.c) 3. Your business may take longer to stand on it's own, but it's okay, stay consistent and disciplined 4. Don't rush to expand just because everyone is expanding. Relax , the time will come. Don't kill what you've already created in a rush to expand. Biashara haitatoroka. 5. If you can do without a physical location, please do. It'll save you on some costs; elec, rent, water e.t.c 6. Consistency pays and the fruits are sweet 🥰
Starting a Business is easy... Maintaining it is an art. My lessons; 1. Don't be afraid to invest in larger infrastructure/innovation business 2. Don't always rely on debt, try exploring equity/grant capital 3. Honestly, there is a time that you must mix business money and out-of-pocket money... just make sure to track it and capture it as share capital, you could re-imburse yourself once the business grows 4. Try basing your start-up in co-working spaces rather than rental spaces 5. Don't hire too quickly. Remember part-time employees is also a good schedule 6. Start as early as you can... and do put your 100% in your business i.e. don't treat it as a side hustle but as a full-time job

I love this video because it is honest and shows what starting and running a business entails. Mistakes and losses help us learn. There is alot of investment that goes into a business and alot of it to marketing, something that many people do not factor. It also takes time to break even. Last year we suffered losses due to expiry of goods which we couldn't sell during the pandemic. The money was all in loans. So we wanted to give up but chose to borrow money to import more goods and this time around have a budget allocated to marketing. Don't give up. Most of the businesses grow meaning starting small and making steps each day until they go global. Starting small helps with lessons which help us not repeat the same mistakes when we grow. Another thing, bw careful about partnerships. Agree and write down the rules. Make sure you have a similar vision and understand the dynamics of the business to avoid break ups or even if they happen, they are amicable.

Biggest lesson I have learnt. 1. You are your own cheerleader ukingoja watu utachizi 2. Partnership is a whole ghetto yani if you can avoid it at all costs! 3. Advertisement is costly 😣 4. You are prone to depression take care of yourself better still get a therapist you will need him/her. 5. Pay your bills when sales are doing well😊
I've learnt not to expect your friends to automatically be your customers. They may have other preferences or sometimes they just can't afford your products/services.
Yup... But just catch your breathe, restrategize and get back into it if you love what you want to do. And pls, don't expect anything from family and friends... Just pray for your portion of the population.
I totally related, the taking and taking it's so draining but one thing I have learnt is to stay positive, if when it's really hard, like I have seen better days and in my worse days I just choose to trust in God's will and plan, also to always give things in all circumstances. Finally remember to pay your tithes❤️ sending love to all entrepreneurs, we are winning no matter what.
.....Doing the same thing over and over is boring 2) It is not a paycheck-money that comes in isn't consistent! 3) It's the little things, not big moves that will bring you more money. E.g how you talk to someone who isn't buying from you today...that person knows someone who needs your product or service. 4)Here, here.. first Its not as glamorous as it looks form a far! Its hard but possible and fulfilling...5)People buy into you before they buy the product/service. Trust is the currency of business.
It takes a lot of patience for a business to stand on its own. Don't give up . I don't think it ever does tho. Its like everytime you get better you unlock a new challenge
A hard truth I’ve learnt is that client flow isn’t always guaranteed. Sometimes they may come in big numbers and you can make really good profits... and sometimes they just disappear 😭. This inconsistency almost made me close shop but we have to keep marching forward. Thanks for the video.
Thank you Joanna, so encouraging! I can relate on so many levels, self doubt is the worst and also getting to the next 'Fenty' level! However, one day at a time! God bless!
Ukweli mtupu. The part for almost hating it. The part for it taking from you. The part where you have no savings left. The part where you pay school fees to learn your tough lessons. The part where you wonder why you even started it and if its still worth it. The part where you really look forward to the day it wont stress you as much any more. The part where you wanna zone out and not think about it any more sababu aki ya nani nimechoka! But still we rise. Proverbs 31.
I honestly don't need to add. You have literally taken words out of my mouth. Business is such a toxic relationship, I say it all the time and yes, you learn so much about yourself, it's funny, and interesting at the same time. When you start making money, TAXES hit you real good. You now pay attention to what the government is doing and it hurts seeing them steal. Yaani Joanna, you've summarized my issues in this video. Every business owner, should pass here. and, why is this season the time, I am also getting tired of my business lol.
Can we talk about the chest pain that comes with paying even and extra 10sh for bread after thinking of how hard you work to get profits from your business 😂 almost feels like they are robbing you! 🙄I feel you girl. Thanks for encouraging businesses owners, you are not alone.
Hi J, not sure if you've already done a video on having a business plan and how it helps having one and following it? I know what we learn from school isn't always what we do when we start working for eg...just how the business plan and real life correlate?
Owning assets is good but it sometimes makes more business sense to lease than actually buy and maintain the assets. Great video, I love your business and motivational content! Keep them coming.
My biggest business lesson is it is important to have a support system. And not the ones that comes through for your business directly, they come through for you when you are down, your rent, food and mental support and clothes. And yes business creates lots of self awareness.
Sis point no 1 and I was like jeeeeeeesus Christ. It's toxic. Very.but we have to push through. Point no 2. On ignorance ghai. One time when shipping particularly when weighing I would price the item before checking weight.lord I was slapped with 1000usd bill 🤣😫 it was tough. Buuuuuut it was done worthwhile lessons. On shipping I've learnt Joanna please I repeat please always use a shipping company (ofcourse a reliable one) it will save you so much heartache. Anyway every point here is absolutely relatable to me as an entrepreneur.
1. It is not a must for your family and friends to buy your products. Don't be bitter when they promote other brands and neglect yours. 2. Maintain the same marketing energy even during the low/dryspell seasons 😅. Imagine you are the only one who can differentiate those two extremes. Customers out here expect us to be consistent
Very true it's not even close to easy it even leaves u with debts or gives u debts u have never had when u had no business...but it's called b/s☀️ celebrate u though u look so adorable
I can relate, am in the taking taking part , I agree the level of ignorance, you assume you can hack it until you realize you don’t know shit But one thing for sure as an entrepreneur you have to constantly learn and research , else if you go with a mentality of know it all , ehe you will fall heard Thanks Joanna
I feel you girl the taking and taking am alwaye like when are you going to give me?🤣🤣🤣 there are good days though.. and some seasons you just want to close everything and be likebye thanks it was real.

Eh, Joana u have said it! Words from my mouth! I feel every single one of those points and I literally just started in Dec 2020🤦🏽♀️....we must push on though...
So authentic! I've learnt so much. Thank you for the vulnerability Joanna. This is what makes you a top tier content creator sis! ❤
I beautiful video @joanna could you do a video on how you overcame the Shippment hustle and kra payment fee for anyone how is starting on it would be very helpful. KEEP SHINING KEEP SMILING
I like your finance type videos...on this, cut yourself some slack. You have survived one of the hardest economic years for everyone, but especially for the make up industry (masks don't go well with lip gloss) and you are STILL standing. You are meant for success. All the very best.
what an informative and educative video. You opened my eyes to so much, low expectations when starting and putting in efforts is what is needed. You are already a successful business lady because you got the experience. Thanks Joanna.
Aaah aki this video has threatened me! Am I going to start my business..ok let me energize myself better... somebody else said business is a race, you race and race and then you race😭Nothing is easy guys let's work hard
Go for it! All the best .
My hard truth was on taxes as well. Get a part time accountant as you start it will save you a lot of headache in the future when KRA comes knocking.
Agreed! One of the best decisions I made from very early on was to get an accountant. It’s saved me the headache.
Aki Joan, you are just speaking whats going on in my business why lie, hating my business, feeling like giving up, spending money with no returns waaaaaa, aki thanks alot for this i now know that am not alone, i was even crying feeling like am the only one goin thru all this, even began questioning my business my decisions hahaha, waaaa..I guess God lead me to your videos to just pass a message to me that i shouldnt give up its super normal..asante sana dear..please please if you dont mind share what you have learnt about shipping coz i want to do shipping as well na sitaki kumake mistakes, or recommend ..please..thanks alot
So relatable 💯💯 You just hit home ✨💯
“This is my business” 🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
I needed this kind of video, I don't own a business because I fear to fail yet again... working on overcoming this fear😨
took the words right out of my mouth. thank you so much for sharing 🙏🏾 you’re not alone.
Biggest lesson I have learnt.
1. You are your own cheerleader ukingoja watu utachizi
2. Partnership is a whole ghetto yani if you can avoid it at all costs!
3. Advertisement is costly 😣
4. You are prone to depression take care of yourself better still get a therapist you will need him/her.
5. Pay your bills when sales are doing well😊
I love this video so much. My business took so much from me mentally and financially I even decided to take a break from it. It's really hard aki😭😭😭
It’s okay to step back and take a break. It’s hard out here!
Love your points. Especially the one on it’s the little things 👌🏾
How can people earn my trust
It takes a lot of patience for a business to stand on its own. Don't give up . I don't think it ever does tho. Its like everytime you get better you unlock a new challenge
A hard truth I’ve learnt is that client flow isn’t always guaranteed. Sometimes they may come in big numbers and you can make really good profits... and sometimes they just disappear 😭. This inconsistency almost made me close shop but we have to keep marching forward. Thanks for the video.
Best video to start a day, love you
It's everything for me plus
Incase you new here i am the founder and CEO 😊😊😊
It’s so nice for me to hear I’m not in the struggle alone!
Thanks alot for this!feels I'm not alone especially on this January🤦♀️
I learnt that, while dealing with hard customers...emotional intelligence is key!
I so feel you, it's like you spoke my business mind... 😭😭
It’s the consistency for me💕
i cant even am even rewatching again, its that serious..thanks dear this was timely
Joanna keeping it 💯... always loved your authenticity 👊🏼
Thankyouuu for sharing this! its good to know that what i'm dealing with is normal❤️
Owning assets is good but it sometimes makes more business sense to lease than actually buy and maintain the assets. Great video, I love your business and motivational content! Keep them coming.
Thanks for this one!
My biggest business lesson is it is important to have a support system. And not the ones that comes through for your business directly, they come through for you when you are down, your rent, food and mental support and clothes. And yes business creates lots of self awareness.
Joanna, so much growth in your content!👏 Keep at it girl
This is eye opening. Thanks for saying it the way it is.
You will get through it, Joanna.
I love love the lighting and quality 😍😍😍
Your skin sis is flawless!
Joanna you are so REAL.. thanks for sharing
Waaaah you're not alone dear.I tell i have a clothing shop in Lodwar and it's taken everything from me.
Super educative!!
Thank you Joanna for sharing 🙌💟
That part for hating😭😭😭😭 thank you for sharing.... God bless you
Very true you always put in cash all savings.
Wise woman
Very true it's not even close to easy it even leaves u with debts or gives u debts u have never had when u had no business...but it's called b/s☀️ celebrate u though u look so adorable
Joanna you inspire me. Thanks for sharing❤
Love this Joanna K
Spoke my experience I wanna cry, and also very insightful. Thanks.
This was so timely!!!
Planning to venture into hair biz....thanks namesie for I'm learning early
I can relate, am in the taking taking part , I agree the level of ignorance, you assume you can hack it until you realize you don’t know shit
But one thing for sure as an entrepreneur you have to constantly learn and research , else if you go with a mentality of know it all , ehe you will fall heard
Thanks Joanna
Agreed! You have to constantly research and try to learn more
I feel you girl the taking and taking am alwaye like when are you going to give me?🤣🤣🤣 there are good days though.. and some seasons you just want to close everything and be likebye thanks it was real.
So very true 💯%, persistence is 🗝 🔐.
I needed to hear this, thank you!
