    In this video, we go over some methods for identifying different pepper plants. It is fairly common to have a "mystery" pepper plant so we're focusing on some of the unique traits that different species and cultivars have. From the different leaf shapes, to the flowers, and the flavors of the pods.

    This is my first year growing anything at all, but I am growing a number of peppers successfully so far. Your channel has been SUPER helpful with that! When I bought my seeds I got a "random superhot mix" that I decided to plant. I know they are all chinense varieties and luckily there's a list of possibilities, but I'm so excited to see what grows!

    I labeled all my peppers this year only to realize that I might have planted one type of pepper seed on top of another. If seeds didn't germinate within 3 weeks, I planted other varities on top...and now I'm thinking the seeds that I thought hadn't germinated actually did. Oops. Maybe I'll be more patient next time :)

    Only my second year growing peppers (I LOVE cowboy candy and had to try) and last year the weather didn't cooperate and this year my cat decided to pull all the tags and I have no idea about anything. I assume all jalapenos look the same and no other pepper looks like it? I keep looking through the catalogues for pictures as I have lots of plants and want to get some sweet peppers but do NOT want to test by tasting them. LOL I'm 76 and too set in my ways. I know I wanted the hungarian pepper they make paprika from and it will probably turn red - my only clue. This video is very helpful and so glad you shared this. Problem is I started over 12 varieties and at least 6 or plants - I think the Lesya is a weird shape so may find it. I found one plant with very small purple birding peppers but they turned out to be hot. I finally took all the peppers that I had picked, cut them all up and froze them or treated them like cowboy candy. I knew some had to be jalapeno. There is always next year and tags will be TIED to the plants!

    Really interesting video!
    Some brands of Fish peppers (c. annuum) have dark seeds (I would say unfortunately, as one of the purposes for Fish peppers originally was to add heat to light-colored sauces).
    Do c. pubescens plants readily grow adventitious roots like tomatoes? Their hairy stems and sprawling growth pattern would suggest it, but this is the first year I've grown them.

    I'm a long time fan of peppers, but only recently started expanding my knowledge about them. I understand they hybrid/mutate when around different plants. Will this trait stay within a single species, or can they cross between species of peppers. I.e. a Fresno pepper crossing with a C. pubescens variety yielding a Fresno looking pepper with black seeds?

    Love to hear your informative videos. I started out this year with 6 varieties. Most are producing fruit, but the plants grew very tall & spindle. Awesome vid. I noticed that the Cubanelles I started from two different seed sources, have yellowish leaves with a lot of purple on them. I didn't notice this on the parent plants. Is this color variegation normal?

    • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sometimes young seedlings will get some purple coloration, but it should fade as the plants grow. Yellowing is not usually healthy, and could be nutrient deficiency or over/under-watering

Just gotten to flower buds now, so I guess I'll wait with the guessing game until I've seen flowers and fruits, but am I right in assuming that tabasco is the highest profile (commercially) frutescens pepper, and the most likely to be sold to a casual audience? • @PepperGeek
      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Purple reaper is a chinense, chinese 5 color is annuum, so I'd look at the leaf shape/size to eliminate one as a possibility. Not sure, there are many types that have purpling, hopefully you have a list of possible varieties to narrow it down!

  • @christopheroliver148
    @christopheroliver148 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but my impression having grown habs, bonnets, hot paper lanterns (a very non-pot pourri c. chinense), and datils is that you don't see the heavily textured almost pimply skin until you get into the super hots. This year, I'm hoping to give away a bunch of datils as I think they are one of the best tasting middling heat c. chinense peppers. My impression is that they have a very pleasant fruitiness without the hab funk I find a bit off-putting.

      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there, so we have many plants producing early pods this time of year, so it isn't too early! As long as the plant isn't tiny, I'd let them grow up and mature at this point in the season. Even if it is tiny, there isn't really a ton of time left (at least in the world of superhots) for pods to grow and ripen up. Good luck!

      @PepperGeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is possible, but I believe the big mama varieties are all pretty well established and stable at this point, having been created around 2014. It may just have been an unreliable seed source, or perhaps an unintentional cross with another variety that is causing the reversion.

    • @raybod1775
      @raybod1775 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@shao1344 Honestly, I wasn’t too successful with small cups. If you must use cups, get the tallest cups you can and put holes on the bottom. Use something like a layer of pebbles at the bottom to allow water to flow out to avoid root rot. A little fertilizer would be nice, but decent soil is good. Allow top of soil to get a bit dry before watering. Don’t water every day unless plants are outside in a hot sunny spot. Try to keep in sun or behind bright window. Peppers seem to evaporate a lot of water, so it makes it difficult to keep them alive inside over winter if you live in a cold environment. Have fun and good luck.

    Umm, what about if they grow up, down, and horizontal all next to each other? Biggest peps all 3" long, about an inch and a half at the top. Plant itself not even a foot high and 9" wide leaf to leaf so far. Not bushy as only taking up half its pot on a lean to the side currently. Peps have 6 bumps up top that taper to a point, smooth like bells. No not a chili 😉Counted 20 peppers in various stages...
