The golden gate can withstand up to 7.9 in real life in movie this was 9.2. In real life the San Andreas fault can produce up to a 9.0 so it's possible for the San Francisco movie quake to happen in real life
We will not know what a mega earthquake does to a major high rise city until one happens. Yes there have been some in the 7's but there has yet to be a 9.0 (give or take a few .'s) in a high rise city like L.A., San Francisco, or Seattle. I'm near Seattle and if Cascadia goes with it's predicted 8.5-9.5 it's anyone's guess as to the damage....

It was the BAY BRIDGE that had a collapse of a section of NOT the main, but the Eastern span of the bridge that occurred in the 89’ Quake; NOT the Golden Gate. They are TWO DIFFERENT bridges. The Eastern span of the BAY BRIDGE has since been rebuilt to be seismically compliant. The Golden Gate has NEVER actually been damaged in an earthquake.
