I'd give it another try next season. Sometimes the tree "decides" it's easier to just give up on that branch... or if there's some cambium left it can heal over. Did you use rooting hormone? It's a slippery slope with varieties. Last count I was at 33... probably closer to 40 including those that haven't made it through winter in my zone. Have a favorite?
What part of Texas are you in? I'm in Montgomery Co. I have one tree that looks like a Mulberry but has never had fruit. I bought two Everbearing Mulberry. I plan to air layer limbs off them in the spring.
I have been propagating my cuttings for years, sometimes successful sometimes unsuccessful. I just figured it was an experiment and if it worked great. You’re the first propagating channel I have subscribed to and I’m really looking forward to following and learning.
Ive done two air layer on a Mulberry. One died, but sprouted new growth below the AL. The second one did fine until a storm broke AL off right below the container. I guess while it was being wipped around it broke all the roots off. When i removed the container the roots stayed in the dirt and it had very few still attached. I potted the AL and it died in few days. Ive tried doing cuttings on Mulberry but so far they have all died. I have three pots with cuttings in them right now, but its getting hot now in SE Texas, so i won't be surprised if they fail.

I checked some cutting this morning I started on June 3rd...I removed everything except the last leaf on each cutting. One pencil size cutting has a bud popping with a leaf on it about mid cutting! The others are still green, even the leaf at the top. So I might have some unknown variety Mulberrys in the future. I found a couple Mulberry trees in my old neighborhood. The last time I was at my wife's mother's house, I swung by the tree and cut a limb off. The tree hangs over a 6' wood fence...trucks are constantly tearing limbs off! This tree has a ton of berries on it for the last two years. So I know it's a major producer!

I find that sometimes failed air layers succeed as cuttings, that seem to have a head start over other cuttings that haven’t gotten that pre-treatment. I love that plastic wrapping you give your air layer pots! I will try that next time I air layer in a pot.
Soaking in water will also prime cuttings nicely, it’s important to change the water every two to three days or they will go anaerobic and start rotting in the water sometimes. Once you see the lenticels or initial roots you can transfer to a solid rooting medium.
I set an AL on my IE but it never rooted. I have about 15 varieties collected so far

Sounds like you are making progress. I've had similar issues. It's a tricky process!
