    Living in AZ, lots of free cooking. I've made my own reflective ovens. They work great. I built a "Lazy Susan" that is 36" off of the ground so no bending over. I drilled 90 holes around the perimeter of the "lazy susan" so that you can turn the oven to follow the sun, then pin it in place so that it does not move in the wind.

    If you watch Off Grid with Doug and Stacy, she has been using her sun oven for a few years, even when there is snow on the ground. It's amazing. Enjoy your sun oven. Just think how using it in the warm months helps keep your house cooler because even a crockpot puts out heat.

      @Jerry Campbell. Great idea! I'm capable of cooking on the ground but have no desire to do so. Fun camping -- no problem. During a short emergency -- I could manage. The company, if they don't, could sell something or even have plans for a surface that would support the oven and ability to rotate by hand. In my area, propane gas grills are often thrown out by neighbors. One of those might make a great base for a platform. The oven and base could be removed and when attached could still be lifted on one end and rolled about.

      I was thinking the same thing. Maybe use one of those big wooden spools used to hold cable & make a turntable on top to easily position the oven with the sun. A handle attached to the side and all terrain wheels on the bottom would make it easy to move around the yard to the optimal sun spot.

    • @Skatejock21
      @Skatejock21 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem is north america will always be energy independent, but the problem itself is assuming that we will move away from it entirely. We will not because our society has civilized so much that you cant quite go back. There are places that simply do not get enough sun during the year and it gets too cold. Often those are places colder the the southern states where there is lots of sun and heat. In my part of the world, it wasn't the coldest place in my country but was considered to be the more tropical part. Even though it still got cold and not a lot of sun because its a rain forest city. I tested baking cookies on my car dash on the hottest day of the year, during a heat wave last year. Proving that yes if its really hot and you have a sauna type heat. Sun isn't enough alone and took 3.5 hours. I baked cookies inside to compare. It was interesting but proved that we have BBQ's here for a reason and propane because unless you build a fire, where its not always allowed because its a rain forest. Some places will be energy independent because its all they can do practically, you have to just deal with the costs unfortunately.

    You need to get the sun oven up on some kind of pedestal table, perhaps one of those gigantic spools people use as tables. You could drill some slanted holes for your anchor pegs. Because of rising prices, and the fact we plan on staying in our home long term, we had Geo-thermal installed. It's a system where tubes are buried in your yard, then it goes through a system and is used to heat or cool our home. I can't explain it well, but it's so worth it, if you are staying in your home. We use very little electric now, and no propane.

    I use our Sun Oven for ten years now and love it but the sun must be out with no clouds in the sky. We keep our oven on the front porch on an old fashioned kitchen cart on rollers making it easy to roll onto the sidewalk and to pivot with the sun. Use our free standing wood stove on those days of clouds and snow for cooking and experiment with foods that can be cooked there.

    I had no intention of buying a solar oven, but after watching this video my husband and I thought about how valuable this would be not only in an emergency situation but also just to use throughout our lifetime to be less and less dependent upon fuel sources. We are in our mid thirties and think that we could use this 2-3 times a week when we are having outside garden work days. I love how the website says that you could basically set it and forget it on a Sunny day and that it will not burn.

    Interesting comments. Most folks spend atleast a minimum of $100.00 a month on a phone plus cable and or internet, all sorts of apps. If we really took a hard look at money we waist on things we think we simply must have the cost of this stove might look quite small.
    This might not work for everyone but
    Sarah and Kevin are offering ideas for alternatives. And they disclosed that they were given the stove. When folks are successful with their channels they get stuff.

    You will absolutely love your sun oven. We've had a couple versions of solar cookers, and finally bought our sun oven around 4 years ago. Wait til you cook your first chicken in it - it's our favorite meal to make in the sun oven. The chicken stays so moist and the flavor is fantastic! Don't worry about using it in the winter. The air may be cold, but the reflection of the sun off the snow actually helps the sun oven cook. I agree with those who suggest mounting the sun oven on a cart with a turntable/lazy susan. Where we live it can get very windy and if the sun oven isn't permanently mounted to something it will tip over, even with using the stakes.

    We absolutely love ours. Bought it years ago after watching Linda's Pantry's numerous amazing demonstrations on how it works. We use ours primarily in the dead of winter here in the Denver area because we get many clear, cloudless days. I have never had an issue getting mine to 360-375 for hours, even when temperatures are in the single digits or teens.. more than hot enough to cook almost anything. As long as you have some sun, you can cook with it.

    • @NickCO303
      @NickCO303 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robinwilson9008 You will not be disappointed if you decide to invest in it. It can be a bit tricky to get the angle just right since the sun is so low in the sky; I usually have to put the support all the way up and still prop it on a stair or something and use a brick to weigh it down. It works just fine with some improvising. Just make sure you start early enough in the day - 10:00am-3:30pm or so is perfect for cooking pretty much anything. Make sure you have clear skies and little shade for most of the day. Outside temps and snow on the ground won't matter at all as long as you have unobstructed sunshine. The highest I've seen mine is 380 and keeping it in the 325-350 range is a piece of cake.

Then I fastened the leg down to the wire instead of using the L pins to anchor it. Now when I need to reposition it all I have to do is turn the cart until it realigns with the sun. When I'm done cooking I wheel it into the garage, let it cool and then clean it. Also, having it elevated up about 8" on the cart makes it better for my arthritic back.

Imagine having one of these if there is a terrible storm and you are without power for days/weeks on end. Or rolling blackouts in the summer due to air conditioner overuse. This would be on my "nice to have" list of preparedness. Of course a camp stove would be less expensive, but they require fuel to operate.

      Easily. A farm isn't all plowing the north 40. In between feeding the animals, ya move it. Checking on the greenhouse, you change it. She checked it every 30 minutes, because it was new to her. Once you get a better feel for what the oven is capable of, you could extend the time. Also, if you are busy and can't move it on the dot, it's just a little lost temp. regulation.
