Shawn Lane was such a rare player because his harmonic and rhythmic knowledge were not overwhelmed by his cutting edge technique on guitar. Yngwie's harmonic knowledge and his musical statements are dwarfed by his incredible technique. There is a sort of mismatch between technique and content. Shawn Lane's content is as big as his technique. Lane is like Allan Holdsworth in that.
I had the privilege of seeing Shawn (and meeting him) three times back in the early/mid 1990s. All three times with Hellborg on bass, and Jeff Sipe and Coffey Baker on drums. Talk about a super group!
Wow, read some of the comments. Some people here are really OUT of their mind. How can you EVEN think of critizise musicians like theses guys? There is only a very few people on this god damn EARTH who can jam with Lane, Hellborg and Felix. This is nonsense. The three of them are MASTERS.
OMFG, this entire trio just kills it on stage. They played for a solid 28 minutes straight in the beginning. The magnitude of this performance is off the scale. Amazing.
@@scflair6916 yeah, something happened with Shawn's guitar for that day (lost in airport?) and this is a lowly Epiphone loaned by the gig organiser. Shawn had never played it before.
I turned 2 years old on this day this was filmed. Their will never be a player like Shawn Lane ever again. Long live his legacy of pure musical vision.
Jason Becker is arguably more melodic, uplifting and fresh and can play just as fast without tapping or sweeping - and he was only 18 when he showed his debut chops.
The first three qualities are subjective, but Shawn's alternate picking was measurably faster than anyone else - and well, Shawn was a lot younger than 18 when he toured with Black Oak Arkansas :) Don't get me wrong, I love Jason's playing but a) it's worthwhile to ensure your argument holds water and b) who cares? @@TheFissionchips Uhm.. Nope.. Lane most certainly was way faster than Becker ever was. Just listen to him play sixes compared to Jason's sixes groupings.
I've watched this so many times, and keeping in mind this is my first ever youtube comment; at the 49:30 mark, a moment of absolutely debilitating beauty seems to rise through and change something in my outlook in the world. You have to take the full dose though!

@@bayesian2007 Pretty sure he is referring to the average person not knowing his name when they should. People only know shitty pop musicians because they are rammed down your throat every day.
you're telling me that Shawn Lane is a top-tier virtuoso guitarist, a genius prodigal keyboard player ...and the dude sings like an angel? where does it end? before long it will come out that Lane was perhaps the best MMA fighter that has ever been in the amateur ring. he was also responsible for the restoration of the sistine chapel, and you might also recognize Shawn Lane via his acting alter-ego billed as "Daniel Day Lewis."
I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. The scope and scale of the music, the amount of mind blowing improvisation, and the fact that Shawn pulled this off on a last minute borrowed Epiphone LP with a bad cable. Yikes!! I am not worthy.
Man I loved this gig and hated it at the same time. I hated it it only because Shawn didn't have his signature Viger and Jeff SIpe wasn't there because its the only pro shot video we have of this trio in the 90's. Felix did amazing and during this period more than half of the shows were improvised, so that shows a lot about Felix. I saw these guys with SIpe, and met Shawn I will never forget that night in Atlanta.

That jam in the beginning man, just swept over me like "Oh yeah man, sounds the modern Weather Report" then I realised it was Black Market and Shawn always plays this tune, so sick.

I could imagine getting use too that pickup switch being on top making for a funked up night and not in a god way.Still on the edge stuff.fuckin love it.
When it hits 16:13, look out. There are so many, but this is one of Shawn's greatest solos. Maybe because it was not his usual rig, a different drummer. And no effects, just guitar into the Soldano and Marshalls. And that Hungarian Minor (?) scale/mode. The definition of badass playing. Damn.

Too bad, rip, i did work with him in the 80s in france before he moved to an upper level, a really funny and kind man.
Sad news indeed, he was not only a phenomenal musician but had also an incredible personal story, about music as a passion.

you nailed it
So true…if you’ve heard one Yngwie solo you’ve heard them all, he’s fantastic but not in the same class as Shawn Lane was.
I find Yngwie's work to just sound like a collection of etudes. Boring. This cat here is in his own orbit. Reminds me of Coltrane's approach.
Allan and Shawn went as far as one can go.
