Sixteen knobs and a screen // MIDI controller vs. TouchOSC

  • Ever wished your MIDI controller had a proper display? In this DIY approach I'm using my phone with the TouchOSC app. I tried to mimic the layout of the Midi Fighter Twister and configured the app to use the same MIDI CCs.
    Synths used on this piece: Sequential Prophet-6 and u-he Repro-5.

    OMG! This idea is so perfect, that it somehow feels ridiculously obvious once u see someone do it. But of course that’s how all elegantly perfect ideas appear! So glad I found this video. I feel like these use cases are the very reason we are drawn to open ended systems like Ableton w Max, TouchOSC, midi controllers and “controllerism” in general. The whole rush of adding our own DIY customizations to audio setups is the only reason I can see anyone having to use a DAW like Ableton in the first place. Shocked this is the only vid on TH-cam applying this concept, and I CANT BELIEVE IT NEVER CAME TO ME lll This reminds me of the kinda stuff mad Zack and mr. bill demo. So Thx bro! U are an inspiration. Got me super pumped to add this n get use out of my old iPhones

      @JamesLevineAndSons sadly it doesn't have a dynamic feedback in ableton mode that displays parameter names (like you find on some modern keyboards); the remote script implementation is super basic (as cool as it is).

    Excellent. I’ve been thinking about a MIDI controller with BYO screen for a while. This is a super cool DIY for that idea. I was thinking it would need a custom App for a particular controller. Never occurred to me you could build your own with something like TouchOSC. Genius 👍

    Haven't played with TouchOSC in years. I had a setup using an old iPad with it as a mixer with meters for Traktor. I remember it being pretty stable too.
    This looks like a great application for it with the Twister.

      hej hej, the midi fighter and touchOSC are not communicating directly but since both are setup as MIDI devices in Ableton Live using exactly the same MIDI CCs they will simultaneously get their MIDI feedback from Live, hope that helps!

I have made a track with routing from twister to touch osc, but no luck since my midi fighter twister is mapped to parameters allready, so no midi signal comes to the track. I cannot map two controllers to one parameter to share ccs. Can you please explain further this awesome setup? Thank you!

    I have a question about your TouchOSC layout. Did you write down the names of each parameter yourself or did you script something that automatically send the names of the parameters.
    I manage to create a layout with 16 knobs which are automatically mapped to the first 16 settings of the VST I'm focus on. But now I would like to also display the name of each parameters automatically. Do you know if there is a way to do that?
    Cheers!

    • @surkidmusic
      @surkidmusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @sliptidemusic
      @sliptidemusic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ableton Live does not support OSC natively. There are some Max4Live plugins that folks have written to do so.. I haven't played w/them myself as they don't meet my own needs, but hopefully that gives you something to look into.

    • @valdir7426
      @valdir7426 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@surkidmusic It's absolutely possible using max for live; I just did a litte tool inspired by your video that will automap any plugin you select to a bank of knob with a corresponding display and names (you can then scroll through banks of controls). You just have to send the names to label object; it's pretty straightforward (well the live object model not so much). so thanks for the inspiration; and cool music.

    this is a super smart idea. it's not so much the feedback, as the twister shows that already, it's the labels! you can save the touchosc template and the ableton set and then if you come back to it in a few months, you won't forget what all the knob assignments are! one of the pitfalls of multiple setups that only get used occasionally is remembering how you have everything set up and this is a great workaround for that. i'm trying to think how i can do something similar, as i have a spare tablet with touchosc on it that i'm not using at the moment.

      If you don't mind connecting/disconnecting the one phone/tablet you've dedicated to numerous controllers/machines/etc.. 1000's of times (or buying 100's of phones/tablets instead dedicated to each one), or having all of those screens lying around with no stands (or laying them on top of controllers/machines/synths/etc..), or spending endless hours mapping while also trying to find the proper software (that typically doesn't exist), etc..etc...... then yes, it makes a ton of sense.

    This is funny, i prefer using a big screen instead of the twister. Getting rid of the disconnection between where you control and seeing what you control, so to speak. Ça n'a pas l'air très réactif. Moi ce que j'aimerais voir c'est l'installation. Parce que s'il faut de trop nombreuse manipulations à chaque utilisation ça perds de son intérêt.

    Do you by any chance know if TouchOSC can remap the midi messages as well? Say, if I wanted the controls on one of the tabs to address different CCs (and channels) than on another tab - I guess you are doing this already in this video - how would you set this up?

    • @surkidmusic
      @surkidmusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      hej thanks, afaik you cannot remap midi messages with touchOSC. i made sure that all the knobs/buttons send different messages across the four midi fighter banks, i.e. for each of the four banks of the controller i created a separate page in touchOSC. hope that makes sense, it's been some time since i set that up.

    • @AntonKuznetsovMusic
      @AntonKuznetsovMusic ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the OP meant how do you change the banks with the buttons on top.

    • @surkidmusic
      @surkidmusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I see, well in the Midi Fighter Utility you can specify certain MIDI messages to switch between the four Midi Fighter banks. Now, all you need to do is to assign the very same MIDI messages for each of the four TouchOSC tabs, that's it. Hope that helps!

    So let me get this straight... it gives next to no control input and your hands will cramp up because the knobs are placed way too close to each other? Not cool. :-)
