    Aced my class 5 road test today with only 1 demerit thanks to you Rick! I’m in BC! Love the work you do and will recommend your channel to anyone learning to drive or those who need a tune up. Examiner asked if I went to driving school and I said no, I learned from Rick august and the smart drivers channel. I think he maybe knew you cuz he laughed a bit. 😂 thanks a million !

    I mainly drove on 2 way highways here in NB but went to Toronto in the summer and first time on the 401 as a driver. I would say it was not bad but man traffic and I are not friends. It was ridiculous how much time I was going under a 100. Coming from NB we are rarely under 100 most places are 110 speed. I did appreciate some drivers who realized my license plate and was respectful of giving some space to correct mistake or give me room. People need to respect people who are not from their province so may not know the streets like them. I think I did amazing for my first time on 4 lanes. Pretty much how u drove I drove I drove there. I credit watching a lot of driving videos and crash videos that helped with defensive driving and the good Lord.

    oh the 401... Probably the worst place you could ever spend your time driving. The weekday "rush hour" in reality starts at 6am and doesn't really stop until about 10pm... between 7-9am and 3-6pm forget it, just suffer through the traffic lights instead.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The 401 through Toronto and the interstates through Atlanta, Georgia were some of the most challenging that I found in North America. When driving truck in the 1990s, we said that if you weren't going past the Schneider Meats Sign (Exit 299) at 5.30am, you were going to sit in traffic in Toronto. It's definitely a busy highway for sure my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick

    The 401 through Toronto is probably the worst driving experience a person can have. I've driven thousands of hours since I first got my G2 and I still feel most in danger when I get on at Leslie and try to get into the express going westbound. If you miss the express you get stuck in an inevitable traffic jam until after Yonge. Everyone is tailgating and slamming on brakes. There's no such thing as changing lanes without cutting someone off. And then there's always the clowns who cut through the solid lines because they're desperate to be on the evening news.

    • @smartdrivetest
      @smartdrivetest  ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @thegregorycolin2335
      @thegregorycolin2335 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Absolutely not. The Official Ministry of Transportation Driver's Handbook states, "Traffic should keep to the right, using the left lanes for passing." Note "lanes" plural, not lane. The right lane is for driving, all the lanes to the left are for passing.
      The Handbook goes on to say "Drive in the right-hand lane when possible. On many freeways with three or more lanes in each direction, large trucks cannot travel in the far left lane and must use the lane to the right for passing. Get into the habit of driving in the right lane, leaving the other lanes clear for passing." All Driver's regardless of speed should be staying in the far right lane when they are not passing and it is safe to do so. If all drivers did this then then driving on the highway would be much safer as there will be more predictable driving patterns, more control over where risk comes from for individual drivers, and smoother traffic flow.

    Your video is useful for someone who has to take the G1 to G license test in province of Ontario which requires highway driving also British Columbia Highway 1 and 99. Since both Canadian provinces have restrictions on drivers who could not pass highway driving. Excellent video overall Rick and in parts of the United States learner and probationary driver's are banned from Parkways. Not the case in NJ where Lerner and probationary driver's can go onto the Garden State Parkway. For NY/NJ drivers they use the term Express and Local lanes for a Canadian express/collector lanes. We have to tell a province of Ontario driver about this otherwise they get lost including a jughandle turns from a Divided highway.

    Good video, Rick, thank you. But what makes it very complicated for every driver is not keeping right and passing left and right in all lanes. Some moments in your video shows that very clearly. In Germany and other countries you must drive in the right lane. You are only allowed in a left lane when passing a slower car. Passing on the right side is forbidden. In this way movements of cars become much move predictable and it's less chaotic for everybody.

      Express lanes are the straight through lanes. Collector or "local lanes" are the freeway lanes that you move into to exit the freeway. In Toronto for example, if you're heading west on the #401, you'll be in the express lanes to head west, but if you want to exit and go on Yonge for example, you'll move right into the collector lanes.
